The light at the end of the tunnel

Chapter 3

Chapter 3

Jun 25, 2025

The following night I go home wondering if I just sold my soul to the devil. I'm dreading waking up tomorrow, I've never had a full conversation with this guy and he's already the biggest jerk with his bigger jerk girlfriend.

When I said yes he didn't even say a word, or where we should meet or what day. Does he think I'm some Genie that can find his house snap of my fingers just because I have straight A's? Even Superman has his limits.

But I wonder, why would he need tutoring so bad? I've never seen him look so desperate before and he said please?!

it seemed so real and genuine it can't be fake right? I mean he rarely shows up to school as it is. It would make sense for him to be failing. Yeah maybe that's just it he's failing and he needs a tutor.

The next day I walk into school with a pit in my stomach halfway about to hurl. When the time finally comes for what I've been dreading facing all day I'm surprised to see that Carter's seat is completely empty.

Absent again? I thought he needed a tutor? Maybe he was just playing a joke on me or messing with me even. Ha. what a jerk just like always, why did I fall for it?

As the last minute bell rings, Nessa comes running into the classroom.

"Glad you could make it. With the rest of us, nessa, have a seat."

 The teacher says sarcastically.

Of course she just brushes him off, placing her belongings off onto the side of her chair leg.

I wonder if she knows where Carter is. Of course she would, who am I kidding they're a couple. Perfect match at that. I decided at the end of class I'll ask her.

I patiently wait for biology to end so I can ask Nessa the big question. The bell finally rings dismissing us all. I slowly walk up to Nessa as she shoves her notebook and pencils into her bag.

"Hey nessa?"

I ask wearily.

"Yes geek?"

Nessa responds.

"You and Carter are like dating right?"

All of a sudden Nessa pauses to look at me for a split second, she then grabs hold of my shoulders.

"Yes obviously! What why?! Who said we weren't? Did anybody say we weren't? Tell me! Tell me who! Who said that?! Tell me who said it!"

She exclaimed.

She then drops her hands from my shoulder's, facing her head towards the ground. Why is she acting so weird? All I asked is if they were dating. She was all over him yesterday. What's her problem?

"Uhh.. no one said anything, it's just, he asked me to help him with some school work but never told me when, where, or what, so I was wondering if you know where he is and why he didn't show up to class today?"

All of a sudden Nessa picks her head up to look at me but quickly looks away and then down at her bag, she grabs hold of it clutching it in her hands as if it was getting snatched away from her hands as we speak.

"Nessa?"

I asked once again gently, trying not to erupt this active ditsy volcano.

"What?!"

She yells, voice cracking, still looking down she starts...crying?

I don't know how to comfort a crying person, or any person for that matter. I've never been comforted. I've always got told to hide my feelings deep down so I can achieve great things. Are these the great things? The things I get to achieve? I take a deep breath before I sigh and finally I ask,

"Is everything okay? I didn't mean to make you cry or anything, I'm sorry."

She looks up at me with tears still in her eyes.

"We broke up ok."

She says squeakily as she lifts her hands to hide her tears.

My heart dropped.

Why did my heart drop?

After standing there taking it all in. In utter disbelief I finally manage to stutter,

"I- I'm sorry..."

The "perfect" couple broke up. Who would have thought? not knowing what to do I just head towards the exit, Before I reach the classroom door I hear Nessa speak out,

"Wait, Amelia, I know where you can find him."

I turn around eagerly. I stand there waiting for Nessa to elaborate.

"Well if I tell you, you have to promise me this one thing. That you will do this one thing for me."

What could she possibly want from me? Does she want me to do her homework for free? Is that it? That's easy. Without realizing what I signed up for I respond,

"Of course."

She swallows.

"I need you to help me get Carter back, you said you were helping him right? Just do anything please. You promise? You said you did?"

WHAT?! I thought it would be something like doing her homework for free! Not trying to win back her ex boyfriend for her! I'm not a matchmaker! But there's no backing out of this now.

"Fine, I'll help you."

I agree reluctantly.

Nessas eyes get big as she grins wide and starts jumping up and down out of excitement trying to cue me to join in with her. Nessa finally calms down and begins to gather her words.

"Okay I'll write the address down."

Nessa scrambles to find a pen and a piece of paper, she then starts scribbling down the address and hands the tiny slip of paper to me.

"Thank you."

I say as I finally walk out of the classroom.
