The next day Carter came to class, which surprised me a little due to his consistent tardiness. I never got a chance to really ask about why he never shows up to school. Maybe now's my chance.
As I make my way to Carter he doesn't even lock eyes or hesitate as he swiftly walks past me without a word. What was that?
As he walks past me gently grazing my shoulder without a turn of his head, I look in the direction he is walking.
"Carter! Sweetie!"
Nessa exclaims with joy as she wraps both her arms around Carter's neck, both locking eyes.
Later in the afternoon my mind starts to wander. Were they mocking me? I thought they broke up, he told me it wasn't even a real relationship, was everything he said to me yesterday was a lie? Whatever, why should I care? Suddenly the teacher jolts me back to reality.
"Amelia? Did you hear me, Amelia?"
Mr Kent waves trying to get my attention.
I look up with embarrassment as the whole class sits in silence staring at me waiting to respond. I finally gather up the courage to speak,
"Uh sorry Mr Kent, could you repeat the question?"
Mr Kent makes his way from the white board to my desk.
"Amelia, are you feeling alright? Do you need me to call the nurse?"
My cheeks start to burn out of embarrassment. I hate that the center of the class's attention is on me, my worst fear come true. I always try to avoid just this, but knowing my luck there's no way to avoid it is there? I place both my hands firmly on my desk pushing myself up as I respond,
"Actually Mr Kent you're right, I'm not feeling so good, could I call home?"
Mr Kent then nods.
"Of course Amelia you work so hard after all how could I say no to my hardest working student, let me write you a pass before you leave."
After he finishes writing the pass, I eagerly grab it out of his hands rushing out of the classroom door, face still flushed from embarrassment. Everyone saw that. Everyone was watching how embarrassing...
As I'm walking down the hall halfway to the office I feel a hand grab my arm and spin me around. As we lock eyes, I immediately recognize them.
"Carter?"
I ask confused as to why he's even out here.
"Won't your girlfriend get mad if she sees us together?"
I ask in a sarcastic tone.
Yet my words didn't seem to phase him, eyes still locked on mine with the same cold look he always has.
"Carter?"
I ask again. I realize he still has a hold on my arm and I pull away. He doesn't retaliate. Before he could speak I quickly walked away finally making my way to the office.
What was that about? Why is Carter acting so weird today? He seemed like he had something to say but he just stood there. I wonder why? No, there's no time to wonder. Whatever he does isn't my business. He shouldn't get me involved.
"Finally, I'm home!"
I scream in joy to myself out of exhaustion. I kick off my shoes and flop myself onto my bed happily, not too soon after, that happiness I had starts fading away as I replay today's events in my head. I decided I was going to tell Carter I was done tutoring him. I don't care how much he offers to pay.
Suddenly lost in thought, a knock at my door jolts me back to reality. Are mom and dad finally back from volunteering overseas? I thought they had at least a week left. No it couldn't be them. Hesitant I walk over to the door and open it just slightly. I then hear a voice shout,
"AMELIA!"
"Claire?!"
I exclaim out of confusion.
"What are you doing here? Isn't school still in session? You shouldn't be here."
"What? Can I not miss my best friend and check on her? I missed you!"
She yells excitedly jumping into my arms.
"How did you know I was home?"
Claire's expression quickly changes into a guilty look.
"Well, you know Bonnie? The one in your biology class?"
She asks wearily.
"Yes, why?"
I question her.
"Well, you know how I had some people move in next to me, it was her we exchanged numbers and she told me about what happened in class today after you walked out. Don't get mad at her though, I asked her to make sure you were okay if anything happened. I never get to see you and I want to make sure you're doing well. You know after the "incident" and all."
She admits nervously.
I stand there arms crossed trying to take in the situation.
"You're not mad are you?"
Claire asks with uncertainty.
"I'm not mad Claire. But I don't need a spy, if you wanted to know how I was you could've asked me yourself. I understand your worries but I'm a big girl. I can do fine on my own, you don't need to worry about me."
I affirm Claire.
"Ah, thank God you're not mad!"
she says with a sigh of relief as she goes in for a hug.
"So are you going to invite me in?"
Claire asks placing her hands on her hips, switching her mood instantly.
"Fine, come in."
I reluctantly give in.
"Yay!"
She exclaimed, as she walked into my house.
"We are going to have so much fun!"
Claire squeals in excitement. Now tell me everything!
That night I explained everything to her.
"I see, so Carter asked you to tutor him and you said yes, so he came over the other day and yall studied together, he told you he and queen bitch broke up, but the next day they're all over each other?"
she asks, trying to clarify my story.
"Correct."
I confirm.
"So why are you mad? You're mad he lied to you about breaking up with nessa? I thought you were just torturing him. Why quit now he's paying you well, I thought?"
Claire asks in confusion.
I proclaim,
"Yes, but why would he lie about that to my face? I don't need them to involve me in their personal life I have enough to deal with as is. What's even weirder was, Earlier today as I was walking to the office he stopped me and didn't say anything, just stood there."
"That is weird, I would try talking to him about it first. Maybe it's a misunderstanding. What address did you say she gave you again?"
Claire asks.
"Oh, this is it."
I say as I hand over the tiny slip of paper I had in my pocket.
"Hm.."
she utters while examining the piece of paper.
All of a sudden her face lights up and she blurts out,
"WAIT. I GOT IT!"
She exclaims.
"What?!"
I ask startled by her sudden change in voice.
"Let's visit the address, I'll come with you."
She pleads, face lit up.
"Claire, are you sure that's a good idea?"
I ask wearily.
"What's the worst that could happen, come on!"
She nudges me trying to persuade me best she can.
"Ugh fine, but stay close to me."
I give in.
"Yay! This is going to be fun."
She says with a devious smirk that almost makes me regret my choice.
"Let's go!"
She points towards the door.
"So the adventure begins.."
I mutter to myself dreadfully as I lock the door behind me.
