He turns his head to me with a shocked look on his face, probably not expecting me to do that. Before he could say anything the planetarium lights turn on.
"Hello?"
We hear a voice echo.
We quickly exchange glances.
"Who's that I thought nobody was supposed to be here?!"
I ask, whispering frantically.
"Shit! That sounds like my dad."
Carter hisses back.
All of a sudden he reaches for my hand grabbing it before I could react he starts dragging me along, running away. I most definitely don't want to be caught by Carter's father after our last meeting. Who knows what lengths he will go to this time to get me to stay away from Carter. I try catching my breath as we finally come to a stop. We find ourselves in an empty hallway. The shuffling of feet becomes more clear as we just stand there catching our breath.
"Quick!"
Carter pulls me by the hand again pushing me into a closet full of cleaning supplies.
"Hey!"
I accidentally blurt out.
Carter quickly covers my mouth. He brings his finger to his mouth signaling for me to be quiet as we are both pushed up against the closet wall with limited space. We lock eyes trying to stay quiet as we possibly can trying our best not to get caught; this is giving me Deja vu.
"Hello, is somebody in here?! This is private property. I will call 911!"
Carter's dad's voice echos.
He finally lets go of my mouth allowing me to breathe better. We both stay there listening to each other's fast paced heart beats and ragged breath. His warmth pressed against my body is somehow calming. We just stand there eyes locked onto each other without even a word whispered. I can feel the warmth of his breath as he stares into my soul.
My eyes lock onto his lips; they're so pretty. He leans in closer almost as if he's going to say something. Before he could lean in any closer the sound of his dads footsteps faded. For some reason I don't want to move, I want to stay this way a little longer. My thoughts were immediately crushed as he cracked the closest door open making sure the coast was clear.
"Let's go."
He whispers, signaling towards the back exit.
We rush out the door circling the building making it to his car. We quickly open his car doors swinging ourselves inside, our adrenaline not letting us catch a break.
"Let's hurry before my dad recognizes my car."
He rushes to start the car's engine. It finally revs as we begin to take off in a hurry. We drive in silence not saying a word about what just happened. I gather the courage to speak,
"Hey thank you for this, even after all that. It was beautiful."
I look over to him.
He flinches at the mention of what just happened.
"Yea, of course I just didn't want things to end like they did yesterday, and sorry about that.
He says after a short pause, cringing.
We come to a stop in front of my house. There's something I want to ask him.
"Why do you care so much? Aren't I just your tutor? You went to all this trouble even though you could've hired anybody else. You're loaded and you could've quite literally hired a professional."
He looks at me with what appears to be shock on his face for a second probably not expecting me to call him out, but it quickly fades.
"You want the truth?"
He asks, removing his hands gently from the wheel after clutching it for so long.
"Isn't that why I asked?"
I reply sarcastically.
"Hah."
He lets out a forced yet exhausted laugh as he massages his face with his hand, pushing his hair back; He looks up at me.
"I don't really need a tutor. I have good grades it's just-"
He pauses,
"Well you already know about everything and the burden I have to carry everyday. I don't want to sound rude so promise me you won't get mad if I get frank."
He looks back at me with sincerity.
I hesitate,
"I promise."
He sighs putting his hands back on the wheel with his head facing his car floor. He clutches the wheel with both hands almost as if he's trying to relieve stress before he continues.
"I don't think the same way now.... You were nobody, I wasn't. I had no way to escape the world I was forced into, I thought maybe you could be a good excuse and my only escape. That day I ran into you, I saw you as a possibility. I know it's stupid but I couldn't help but grasp onto that possibility."
He looks up at me with shame on his face.
"You don't think the same way now? Why?"
I ask.
"Because I didn't know you. I was a jerk, I know. I didn't see you as a person at first but as an opportunity. Now it is different. I see you as a person, and you are amazing."
He looks down again.
After silence filling the car I speak,
"Look I get it, I'm not holding that against you I'd probably do the same if I was in your shoes so I can't be mad. And you're not that big of a jerk."
I grin, trying to lighten the mood.
It worked because he looks up at me, the unpleasant look on his face disappearing. He smirks.
"Thank you."
Carters says, his smirk forming into a soft smile.
"Don't mention it. If not your tutor I think we could be really good friends."
I stare at him searching his eyes as he receives my words.
"Me too."
I get out of the car waving goodbye as he drives
off. Before I could unlock my door I hear a car pull into my driveway; I look back, to my surprise it's my parents...
