Jon Smith
As the awakening happened, Edward should have experienced one of two things. And explosion of one of the four element forms that would then cling to his form, engulfing his body in either fire, water, wind or earth, showing that he was an enhancer. Or an explosion of one of the four element forms that would hover and circle around his form.
The force of the explosion should have then been absorbed by the reinforced glass, the pressure passing through the tubes and pipes of the machine and registering whether the newly formed mages magical power was below average, average or above average. Simultaneously placing them in a percentile of the population.
Yeah, that was what was supposed to happen… so how… how could this be possible.
The explosion was so large, that the reinforced glass dome that surrounded Edward shattered on impact, the force cascading glass in all directions, further shattering into smaller shards as they hit the ground. Luckily, from the look of him, Edward was left unharmed.
However, that wasn’t the end of the surprises. It was strange enough that the glass had shattered from his awakening, after all, there was only one other recorded case of someone achieving such a feat on their awakening day. However, what was even more amazing, was that Edward didn’t just awaken with one elemental affinity like I had expected him to, hell, it wasn’t even two, which would have already been a rarity. But Edward had awakened with four elemental affinities. Earth, fire, water and wind. All four elements. Something that had never been seen or heard of in the history of man and magic.
I couldn’t help but sit there, stunned mouth half agape, as I watched my three-year-old boy, sat there, legs crossed, eyes closed, his body switching between the elements. His body first engulfed in amber flames, to then be encrusted in brown and grey earth, then wrapped in spiralling winds and finally incased in bubbling, clear blue water. Just for the cycle to repeat over and over again.
I was stunned. Completely and utterly stunned. It was unheard of, completely unheard of. The only thing close to this was the fact that the king, Von Astraea, had also awakened with an explosion that had, according to the government, shattered the glass dome. And the rumour also persists to say that he had been circled with wind, fire and earth magic whilst doing so. Which would make sense considering that he was a tri-elemental mage.
But this, this was far bigger. Not only had Edward also awakened with a drone shattering explosion, but he was a quadra-elemental mage. Something only thought of in fairy tales and scientific and magical theories. But to top it all off, he had done so at the mere age of three… if this information were to get out somehow… the uproar would be worse than initial lay anticipated. I couldn’t let that happen.
I was so stunned and impressed by what I had seen. That I had failed to hear the persistent beeping of the control panel before me. Completely missing the error signs that was blaring right before me, as my eyes were glued to the magnificent sight of my son. The quadra-elemental, three-year-old enhancer.
Before I could reach for the machine and turn it off… I was too late. The whirring of machinery overworking itself whistled throughout the chamber like a jet engine… before… boom. The machine in the control room and the machine that was attached to my son exploded with an ear splitting and earth-shaking, vibrating explosion. The explosion rocketing upwards throughout the machinery like a bullet train and causing a secondary explosion in the subsequent room above this one.
As this happened, the force of the explosion through me backwards towards the wall, knocking the wind out of me, before sharp shards of metal and glass shot towards me like an expeller had just used advanced earth magic on me. As the shards of metal and glass lodged themselves into my skin I screamed out in pain, momentarily wallowing in my own pain before…
“Oh, my Griffins! Edward! Edward!”
I bellowed, as I slowly got up, my healing magic instantly working on my wounded body, and forcing the shrapnel shards out of my body as my flesh repaired itself. Hurriedly, I quickly rushed out of the control room and into the awakening chamber, expecting to find the worst. Expecting to find a dead, wheat blonde haired baby trapped under a pile of broken machinery and rubble.
But thankfully… that wasn’t the case. He was fine… safe and sound. Sat in the exact same place he’d been the entire time. A protective layer of fading wind and crumbling earth surrounding his body, as he sat there, eyes still closed. His body complete devoid of harm.
Seeing my boy, safe and sound, not a scratch on him, nor a hair missing from his head, I fell to my knees in relief. Tears streaming from my eyes. Relief filling my heart as my burst of adrenaline settled
“Oh Edward… I-I’m so glad that you're not hurt… I’m so glad that your safe.”
I wept like a child, my nose dripping with snot, as I clung to my son.
Edward Smith
As I came to, finally being able to release my self from the strange meditational state I found myself trapped in as my body went through the strange awakening process. I found myself being clung onto by a sobbing and blubbering Jon, surrounded by the rubble of broken machinery, glass and the rubble of the awakening chambers ceiling.
I was complete baffled about what was going on. The awakening state had put me in a sort of trance that was hard to break out of. Oddly enough, it reminded me of the time when I was incorporeal and could smell colours and hear sounds. Just before I had reincarnated into this world. Except this time, I hadn’t been alone.
It was hard to make out what it was. But all I knew was that it was a strange, blurry, giant winged four-legged figure. That simply hovered before me. Unmoving par from the steady beating of its wings.
Whether it was a vision, hallucination or just a weird dream I had no idea. But what I did know, was that I had officially awakened as a mage… an enhancer, that was able to manipulate all four elements of magic.
It was something that had never been seen in the existence of man or magic. And it was safe to say… that it felt truly and utterly amazing, even more amazing than spiritual power had felt back in my old world.
It made me feel as if I could do anything I put my mind to… even, if that was becoming king, and conquering the entirety of the world…
Not that I wanted too of course. After all, I still desired that easy and peaceful life that I didn’t get the chance to live all those years ago. However, strangely, it was a comforting feeling.
Knowing that I could… if I so wished it.
