In a fictional Japanese city secretly connected to the Digital World, Digimon and humans live side by side. Within this hidden society, people casually have partner Digimon who go to school or work with them, or even live independently. When crises arise, groups of children, sometimes chosen and sometimes self-formed, emerge to protect both worlds.
The main story follows a group of misfit kids without partner Digimon, each finding a way to forge their own connection. One steals a Digivice, another bonds with a Legendary Spirit. Though they start for selfish reasons, they grow into true heroes. Along the way, they begin to interact with older teams of Chosen Children.
Takemi is one of those older kids. She already had her great adventure and now steps aside unless the danger is serious enough to call for multiple teams. She becomes the first link between the old and new generations.
Takemi is a trans woman and was created to bring trans representation into the Digimon universe, a setting where evolution and identity are fluid. Her group’s theme is X-Evolution, and although she has an Agumon partner and the iconic "Ta" in her name, she is not the leader. That role belongs to Akira, her childhood friend, partnered with Renamon.
After their adventure, Takemi struggles with her identity. But when she sees her Agumon, A-chan, undergo X-Evolution and remain true to himself, she realizes she can do the same. While Digimon may not fully understand gender, they view it as a kind of evolution, and they support her completely.
