In my defense, I knew the right terms... I just thought they were interchangeable as synonyms.
But, it turns out, 分店 and 分家 are verrry different. And I believe the reason why it's 開一家, not 開一店 is the 'counter'? :)
Also I don't know if in your head the inflection for "what?" "what?" reads the same. LOL. I was thinking- if English weren't my first language I could potentially read it weirdly. But in my head it goes what? with inflection up, like a question and the second is shorter with inflection down, like in 'what's wrong'. Reading too much into this.
