The Superway is a railway that, rather than tunneling through the mountains, goes up and over them. This is because the mountains are home to all kinds of unpredictable areas. Many caverns, valleys, and crevices are home to potentially dangerous magic. One such area is the Fire Valley, which is filled with magic flames that cannot be extinguished, even when submerged in water. There are a great many other areas, some completely sealed off. All attempts to dig tunnels through the mountains have resulted in catastrophe, and few who attempt to climb through the mountains make it across. Before the superway was established, people got around the mountains on boats, but now the trains offer a much more convenient solution.
Also, an update: The next episode will likely take a while, as my motivation to continue updating Tapas has dropped off pretty steeply. I will still try to upload the comic to Tumblr, and if I decide to resume Tapas uploads they will be on a weekly basis.
