The man at the edge of the woods

Chapter four

Chapter four

Jul 22, 2025

“What do you want from me?” He thought he had said it in a solemn and imposing tone, but in the heavy air those uncertain words hardly propagated. “Came to visit you, thought you might like it” and so saying he lay down fully on the sofa bed. He was wearing the same shirt as when he had found him in the woods, it was dirty, torn and with a huge pool of congealed blood on his right side. “So do you like the new hair or not?” still in disbelief Samuel stared at him for a long time, his pupils still flickering with fear nevertheless not allowing him to concentrate as well as he could. "I think... that they look good on you?" He finally proclaimed in a thin voice, unsure in his statement. The creature waited a few seconds before breaking into a thunderous laugh, somehow even this managed to reconcile in itself two usually opposite aspects: a bloody violence and a bewitching sweetness. As the other laughed Samuel realized that he was getting used to the unreal situation, his body was relaxing and he was beginning to breathe more normally.
A good sign or a bad one?
As the laughter ended Silas became entranced as he watched the storm “who knew I would end up talking to a human,” Samuel took the chance, mustered up the necessary courage, let go a deep preparatory breath, and began "if you are real, then what exactly are you?" “Mmm finally some interesting questions, but I can't give you the answers you're interested in without anything in return, so why don't you give me something I might be interested in too?” The being's head suddenly snapped toward the boy, who promptly retreated, the languid grin of the monster in front of him grew even wider, dense drops of the strange substance fell from his tongue, and floated suspended in the air instead of splattered on the ground. “What do you say Sammy?” The demon's aberrant eyes squinted, causing the inevitable buildup of viscous blood at the movement and its copious spillage from the eyes themselves. “Shall we make a little deal?” All the boy's nerves were screaming at him to run away, his heart had resumed the brisk pace of the beginning, his brain knew he had to say no. 'But even if I say no? What would stop him from threatening to hurt me in order to get the information he wants anyway?' and he saw that smile widen and those eyes succumb even more; and so it was with that excuse that he masked that burning inside him that wanted at all costs to continue. “What kind of deal?” He asked cautiously, as the ghastly man rose slowly by setting himself down, “I will answer your questions as truthfully as I can, you in return promise to help me with all your strength to return to the realm where I belong.” Two things in particular Sammy didn't like 1) what he got out of it was mere information (about an incredible subject it's true, but one that no one would believe anyway) and 2) he really didn't like that ‘with all his strength,’ it sounded very much like a potentially dangerous phrase. 'With all my physical and mental strength? To the point of my exhaustion and death?' and as he reflected the creature did not move. “Can this deal be changed?” “You can try.” He swallowed and tried his luck "couldn't I get more than just information? And I'd like you to be more specific about that ‘with all your strength’ please" after a few moments he felt a hand grab his jaw, hold it steady with superhuman strength. If he had dared to thwart it even in the slightest degree it would surely have broken. He closed his eyes tightly, kept them sealed and tried not to focus on the sensation of that huge, rough hand handling him at will. Those familiar shivers ran through his entirety and he felt a searing heat expand throughout his body, starting with that hand. “Tell me little boy, what would you like to have?” He could feel the other's breath on his face, his words echoing in his head, before his body could even communicate any action to him, Samuel had already squinted his eyes and started to speak “what can you give me?” Even the creature who had arrived from another realm seemed astonished by the response; then he drew closer, their faces inches apart, Samuel was now bathed in the feral smell of blood, his eyes fixed in the other's terrifying red lumps. He also saw very clearly the sort of viscous thread that pierced the scars and which, to his surprise, seemed to be constantly moving.

“Oh my darling I could give you anything you desire,” Silas's low voice made the boy's breath shorten, and he slowly placed his own hand on that of the arm that still held his jaw firmly in place. Under his fingers he could feel that damn thread running at such a high speed that it warmed his palm. He could also feel the battered skin, the tender flaps of scar flesh. "But maybe that would be a bit much, how about a wish? Is there something your insides are crying out for?" But the boy was still too focused on the sensation of feeling his skin, his body under his hand, so the demon gently shook his head, forcing him up “look at me my dear, or am I not interesting enough to you perhaps?” But Samuel's head was spinning, he felt that stupid sofa bed rocking beneath him, the sounds all around crumbling, his beating heart now no longer doing so out of fear. He was afraid to think, afraid to look at him, afraid he would understand.
He felt engulfed and he did not even know quite himself by what, perhaps by the mere presence and proximity of the other. Fortunately his mind slapped him hard enough to make him more or less consciously come to his senses again 'get yourself together! It's all the same as before, just concentrate and everything will be fine, get yourself right'. “Can I ask anything?” “Of course, once I'm gone I won't give a damn about this place, you can even ask me to destry it or have the ability to do it yourself as far as I'm concerned. However, I will forbid you any desires that might undermine my of safety or that would prevent you from fulfilling your part of the bargain,” after about ten seconds Samuel readjusted his grip on the other arm before speaking "what if I simply ask you for ... help?“ ”You'll have to be more specific“ ”...a favor, a chance to call you at the time I need you and make that wish there,“ he stared at the demon, hopeful ”would that be okay?" Silas loosed the grip he had on the other but not quite, with two fingers he lightly moved the boy's head to one side and the other, and then up and down. The bruises he had left would be hard to explain in the morning. He released his grip for good, and Samuel almost pushed further down to find it again. Instead he too withdrew his hand. “Why not,” was the final sentence, the lips moving further away from each other. "But the moment I come to you, the moment I call your name, the moment you feel my presence, you will come to me, you will do what I ask each time, I don't care what situation you are in or what you are doing. The moment I call your name you will answer to me and me alone." Samuel swallowed, that speech was terryfing 'or exciting?' proposed the little voice in his head, but he had no time to reproach himself when he felt the same hand from before slip behind the back of his head, grab his hair and push him closer to that entity.
"You will not be able to refuse, you will not be able to resist. I will call you by your name and you will be mine," and Samuel at the words felt an immense warmth break out inside him and radiate from him. “Do you accept the bargain my dear?” adrenaline rushed through his veins, kept him alert and active and alive, he felt it was a bad idea, he knew it, yet that hand holding him tight instead of threatening him incited him. Seconds ticked by and the anticipation grew in that grave-looking, orangeish room with tongues of darkness surrounding them, the tension rising, palpable in that surreal atmosphere. 'Only a fool would accept'

“Yes, I accept it.”

A stranger, wounded and trembling, appears out of nowhere. He says he needs help, but something doesn't quite add up in his eyes; and when he says Samuel's name, something breaks: how can he know who he is?
Maybe he is not really an attacker. Maybe he is not even human. And so adrenaline, panic, and a restlessness grow with each heartbeat.
For danger does not always come with a weapon in hand, sometimes it has a forgotten name, tired eyes, and a smile that seems to know too much.
A tense, dark and nuanced tale where fear mixes with attraction and the line between the real and the unexplainable grows ever thinner.

[...] He slowly reopened his now crimson-red, pupil-less eyes, as if the eyeball itself was drowning in blood, whereupon with the index finger of his left hand he went to slowly graze the palm of his right, and vice versa at the same time: to this very light touch corresponded a very fine thread of pure darkness, it was not simply black, it was made of the same material that oblivion is made of. [...] he felt his scars open up again, his flesh being torn apart as his mouth let loose in a toothy smile, excited almost at seeing it all unfold according to plan.
