Plagued fate

Whispers Before Dawn

Whispers Before Dawn

Jul 24, 2025

Lily drifted back to sleep after Liora helped her through the nightmare she had experienced. Liora stood over Lily, looking down at her to see a tear trickling down one eye, despite Lily now sleeping comfortably. Liora was unable to leave her, so she just sat at the edge of the bed, looking at the sleeping Lily.

Liora sighed, whether it was women from centuries ahead or in this century, the pain inflicted by betrayal of men always cut deep, and experiencing that herself, she had an extra soft spot for Lily.

"I promise to help you," she said softly, extending her hand, trying to touch Lily, but stopping herself in time. "Maybe this is why I have been transported here."

At the wee hours of the night, after making sure Lily was in a deep sleep, Liora stood up from the edge of the bed, dusting her dress, "Time to get to work," she said, drifting outside, leaving Lily sleeping to sleep peacefully.

The one thing she missed about being alive was sleep. She was never tired or able to sleep, which gave her all the time, so she resorted to moving from one place to another, eavesdropping, and hearing the most secretive things that were not meant to be heard. She was unseen, so she wandered freely, roaming from one place to another, especially places she knew she would find people were awake.

Now with nothing else to do, she decided to just drift around the villa, and almost everyone was asleep except for the guards.

With Lily's nightmare she was reminded of the first day she met her it was a night like this one and she was just drifting around aimlessly when she randomly when she ended up in Duke Vexwell's estate. she moved around the rooms from room to room looking for anything interesting to watch that might elivate her boredom, she came upon Lily walking she didn't know why but the moment she laid her eyes upon her she felt a sudden strong pull she closed her eyes expecting the worst because the last time she felt such a pull was when she died and was transported to this era.

Liora opened her eyes, looking around, expecting to be in another place, and found that she was face to face with Lily. Looking into her eyes, she gasped. Even though Lily was young, her eyes looked dead, devoid of any life. It was as if she had completely given up on living.

She didn't know why she had the urge to follow her around as they moved through the estate, but everywhere they passed, she could hear the servants sneer and spit as Lily passed by; some were even talking loudly about how useless she was.

But it looked like it was a daily thing because Lily ignored them as she walked to the Duke's chambers, and that was when they both witnessed the shocking scene of the Duke in the arms of another woman.

From that moment until the day of her death, Liora kept a close eye on Lily.

She didn't know why, but realised then that Lily attracted a lot of female ghosts just like her, and she was always surrounded by dark energy. Although the ghosts couldn't harm her, being in their presence for a long time drained her energy. So Liora took it upon herself to chase them off.

When Liora returned to her senses, she was in a room with Archduke Lucien.

"Of course," she said, rolling her eyes ", I always find myself in the presence of handsome men," she chuckled at her own joke.

Lucien was sitting there with his knight, and Liora realised the conversation was about Lily so she went closer to hear it well.

"She is completely different from what I've heard," Lucien said, rubbing his chin. "I was expecting someone rude, vain, and entitled, as the stories we heard, but she's actually totally different. It was very surprising today."

"Will you send the emperor a letter informing him about that?" the knight asked.

Lucien cocked his head to the side, smiling. "No, I wanted to at first, but not now anyway, it's not that he's interested in her," he said.

It will get dangerous moving forward, so go and write a letter and dispatch it to Captain Vihall, asking him to send more guards. And also the guards should be informed so that they can prepare, as the threat is growing, and I'm sure a few women in the capital will be trying something."

He paused You know what, I suddenly don't want her to die anymore," Lucien said.

With that command, the knight left the room, leaving Liora and Lucien alone. After the guard left, Lucien stood up and headed to the bathing chamber.

"Hmm. Interesting," Liora said. "As much as I would like to see this," she said, moving her hands in circles in the air at the direction of his chest, "I need to go gather more intel." laughing out as if he could hear her, and with that, she drifted out.

In the wee hours of the following morning in Lily's bedchamber, Marian was sitting at the bed, frustrated, "Your highness, please, wake up. We will be late," Marian said, gently trying to wake the sleepy Lily.

The princess had been surprising her lately. Almost all her behaviour had changed. It was like she was a completely different person, which surprised her, but she liked this version of the princess better, and she was praying deep down that the princess would remain the way she was forever.

Although Priscilla was clearly not honest with the princess, she still preferred Priscilla to serve her instead of Marian. She had even turned a blind eye when Priscilla bullied the maids and acted arrogantly, which in turn created a bad reputation for the princess.

However yesterday, everything changed. After the princess fainted twice, not only did she not call for Priscilla, but she also acted like she didn't even know her, despite receiving glances from her. Marian was happy about that. Although the princess was childish, she didn't have a malicious heart.

One of the many changes was that the princess was always the first to wake up except when feeling unwell which was due to the palace training she had received from childhood, but today however much Marian tried waking her up the princess would sit up without opening her eyes and continue sleeping while seated, and although frustrated Marian could help but smile.

She tried again, gently shaking her, and finally the princess opened her eyes, but like the previous night, she looked confused for a while, and suddenly, Marian saw realisation flash through her eyes.

"Let's go, Your Highness. You need to bathe quickly and dress. The Prince and Archduke are already in the dining room," she said.
