RUFUS

PART 7: BEATRICE

PART 7: BEATRICE

Aug 10, 2025

Guess what? After waking up, the kid tossed me across the hut!  Seriously? After I'd spent the night keeping those creepy spirits away?  (It's a cat thing, you wouldn't understand.)  Anyway, he apologized by petting me. Turns out, he likes cats.  He named me Rufus because of my reddish fur.  Sweet, huh?  Then, he turned to the kid who was still snoring away in the sun—total lazybones.

'Guess he needs more rest.  Took the worst of that explosion,' Gio muttered, his voice laced with weariness.

Later, he went outside.  The sight that greeted him… oof. Body parts scattered everywhere, dead faces frozen in terror.  Gio didn’t just throw up; he practically emptied his stomach.  I saw the horror mirrored in his eyes – the utter despair and disbelief.  He just stared, a low moan escaping his lips, before he started to cry.  His whispered questions hung heavy in the air, heavy with the weight of death and senseless violence.

WHY?         HOW?      WHAT TO DO?    WHY?
               HOW?         WHAT?               WHAT?
WHY?                   WHAT NOW?                 HOW DID THIS HAPPED?

His voice was barely a whisper as the questions tumbled out.

IS THIS WHERE I DIE?

The desperation in his eyes and his voice and how he started to cry is heartbreaking. No... I can't yet... I want to live… I need to survive... BUT HOW?

I rubbed against his leg, offering silent comfort, even my purrs couldn’t fight off this despair. It was then a tiny voice broke the silence.  "Mister, are you crying?" A little girl stood there, her wide eyes reflecting the horror of their surroundings.  Gio, totally stunned, stammered, "How… how did you get here?" The kid's presence added to the tension, highlighting the scale of the tragedy. He doesn't know how to react to why a little girl is in this place, a hell.

Gio gathered himself, asking the little girl her name.  "Beatrice," she replied, a little shyly.

"Beatrice," Gio repeated softly, his gaze lingering on her innocent face.  "How did you get here?"

"I'm with my sister," Beatrice said, her brow furrowed in confusion. "But I don't know where we are."

Before Gio could respond, a woman rushed towards them, her voice sharp with concern. "Beatrice!  You little punk, I told you not to wander off! It's not safe!"

Gio looked at the woman, then back at Beatrice.  "Your sister?" he asked, a question hanging in the air.

"Yeah," the woman sighed, running a hand through her hair. "She never listens." She knelt down and gently grasped Beatrice's hand.

Beatrice tugged on her sister's hand. "Sister, why was that man crying?"

The woman's face softened as she looked at Gio, then back at her sister, who appeared completely unaware of the horrors of the night before. "Because... well, you didn't eat your vegetables. Now, back to the hut before I feed you to the sharks!"  She playfully poked her sister's forehead.  Beatrice giggled, obediently heading back towards the huts.

A faint smile touched Gio's lips.  He was struck by Beatrice's innocence in the midst of this nightmare. He found himself strangely relieved and happy that she seemed unaffected by last night.  The woman noticed Gio's smile and smiled back. "She's six years old. She doesn't understand yet, not yet."

Gio nodded, his smile deepening. "I know.  And I hope it stays that way, until we get out of this hell." He paused, then a serious question arose in his head. "But how did she even end up here? I heard they only took teenagers."

The woman chuckled, a hint of weariness in her voice. "That's a long story, but basically, it's my fault.  I foolishly sold us both.  Things... things were tough. Dad died in an accident. Mom left us for some guy overseas.  We lost our home, and the fast food joint fired me when Beatrice proved too 'annoying.'"

Later, as the sun rose above the horrific scene of death and destruction, Eve continued her story.

"We were starving. Then, this guy gave me a bunch of money. He said I could get more if I met him.  Stupid of me, right? The money ran out.  I went to meet him… and two guys grabbed me. Beatrice followed, bless her heart.  They tied me up, but I bit one, which made him punch me. I don't know how, but Beatrice ended up on the ship with me.  They were ready to kill her, but I begged them to let her go with me.  They just tied her up beside me, and here we are." Eve paused. "Crazy, right?  But I would gladly die for her." She smiled. “So, what’s your story?”

Gio shook his head, a wry smile playing on his lips. "I don't know.  I think I hit my head. When I woke up, I was dizzy.  Everything's a blur."

They both laughed, a shared moment of light amidst the darkness.

The salt spray stings Giovanni's eyes as he opens them, not to the blissful ignorance of a shipwreck survivor, but to the stark, brutal reality of his captivity. He wasn't lost at sea; he was brought here—deliberately, cruelly delivered to this hellish island under the control of Jaguar and "The Black Umbrella." The island is a training ground, a place where broken men are transformed into weapons of unparalleled lethality. Forced to embrace the darkness within, Gio undergoes a harrowing transformation, honing his skills in brutal combat. Yet, as he fights to survive, fragments of his past claw their way into his consciousness, forcing him to confront a truth that is both terrifying and strangely compelling. His struggle is not just for survival; it's a desperate battle against the monstrous identity that Jaguar is forcing upon him, a fight against his own potential for destruction. The chilling truth of how he arrived here fuels his desperate desire to escape.
