PART 8: THE ISLAND

PART 8: THE ISLAND

Aug 10, 2025

While Gio and Eve are exchanging information about thier experiences, the shore rumbled under the weight of a landing ship. Heavily armed figures spilled onto the beach, their boots crunching on the sand, the metallic clang of their weapons echoing in the still air. The survivors watched, a mixture of fear and morbid fascination etched on their faces. The smell of salt and diesel hung heavy in the air, mingling with the coppery tang of blood still staining the sand. The men moved with military precision, their actions efficient and ruthless. They collected the bodies, a grim task performed with the cold efficiency of a well-oiled machine. The hum of generators soon filled the air, a stark contrast to the unsettling quiet of the previous hours. Power lines snaked across the island, their stark white lines cutting across the lush greenery. The survivors whispered among themselves, their eyes wide with a combination of wonder and apprehension.

"Underwater power lines," a boy explained, his voice surprisingly steady despite the unsettling scene. His name was Walter, and he'd survived the first night. He looked up at the others, seeing their questions in their wide eyes. "They transmit electricity across the water. It's a special cable," he continued, "with a central conductor, surrounded by thick insulation and protected by steel wire. Special ships lay them on the seabed. They bury them for protection in shallower waters."

Gio felt a mixture of relief and unease; the restoration of power was something to be thankful for, yet it felt unsettling. He glanced over at me, who was watching the scene with an unnerving calm.

The masked figures gathered the survivors, herding them towards a large screen that had been mysteriously erected. At first, only a "no signal" message blinked on the screen; then, a face appeared: Jaguar.

A collective gasp went through the crowd. Whispers and speculation rippled through the group. A tense silence fell before Jaguar's voice, amplified and distorted, boomed across the island.

"Greetings, candidates! How's everyone feeling after yesterday's little… exercise*? Ho ho ho! From 150 hopefuls, we're down to 128! Quite efficient, wouldn't you say?" He laughed, a chilling sound that sent shivers down Gio's spine. "We only need 52. And it seems many of you are eager to… thin the ranks. Excellent!" He paused dramatically. "The games… have only just begun."

After the terrifying speech of Jaguar, The masked men began herding the survivors, their movements sharp and efficient. The rough ropes bit into wrists; the sounds of struggling were muffled by the grim determination of the guards. Fear, thick and suffocating, hung in the air, clinging to the survivors like a shroud. I felt Eve’s hand clench in Gio’s, her knuckles white against the rough rope binding them both. Beatrice, thankfully, seemed oblivious to the terror around her, her small hand clutching a worn doll. I pressed close to Gio's feet, my fur bristling, a silent guardian.

The forced march toward the shore was agonizingly slow. The salty air bit at our lungs, mingling with the stench of death—the coppery tang of blood still clinging to the sand, the acrid smell of burning flesh rising from a growing pyre. The sight of the already-burning bodies, the charred remains of those who had attempted a desperate escape, sent a fresh wave of icy dread through me. The rhythmic crackle of the flames punctuated the air with a terrifying, hypnotic rhythm, a macabre soundtrack to our forced procession. The bodies of those shot trying to escape lay on the sand, grim reminders of the futility of resistance.

Finally, we reached our destination: a colossal structure of blackened metal and glowing embers, a grotesque forge pulsating with infernal heat. Sparks showered from its gaping maw, illuminating the grim landscape in flickering strokes of orange and red. The air vibrated with the sounds of hammering metal, a cacophony of clanging and hissing that grated on my nerves. The acrid smell of burnt flesh and burning metal hung heavy in the air.

My heart pounded in my chest. I could feel Eve’s grip tightening on Gio’s arm, her knuckles bone-white. Beatrice, thankfully, seemed to view the whole scene as a sort of strange performance, her eyes wide but uncomprehending. Even my usual composure seemed to waver. I pressed against Gio’s legs, my purrs sounding strained and anxious, a silent reflection of the fear that gripped us all. This was no ordinary forging station; it was a place of unimaginable horror, and we were trapped right in its heart.
