PART 9: LABELLING

PART 9: LABELLING

Aug 23, 2025

The sheer scale of the building stole my breath.  Towers of flame erupted from the furnaces, casting an infernal glow across the scene.  Massive figures, their muscles bulging beneath sweat-stained clothing, swung hammers, shaping glowing metal into weapons—daggers and spears, bows and crossbows.  The air vibrated with the rhythmic clang of metal on metal, the heat a palpable presence.

An old man with a surprisingly jovial face emerged from the shadows.  "Well, well," he chuckled, his voice surprisingly calm despite the brutal scene unfolding around him. "What a sorry sight.  I'm Mr. Hong, and I'll be your blacksmith for the duration of your… stay."

His tour of the forge was less a tour and more a terrifying procession. Each weapon was a chilling reminder of the violence yet to come.  I could feel Gio tense beside me, his eyes scanning the scene with suspicion. Eve's grip on Beatrice's hand tightened. Even Beatrice, usually so oblivious, seemed to sense the undercurrent of menace.  A wave of nausea washed over me as we passed shelves laden with deadly implements, each one a potential instrument of death.

Mr. Hong led us to the other side of the building, where a gigantic screen dominated the wall. Jaguar's face filled the screen, his smile somehow more chilling than any weapon in the forge.

“Enjoy the tour?” he purred, his voice dripping with false pleasantries.  “Whether you did or didn’t, it’s all rather irrelevant, isn’t it? Mr. Hong here will be crafting your weapons, but first… every product needs a little tagging, don't they?”  The false cheer in his voice was enough to make my fur stand on end.

The men surrounding us moved with chilling efficiency.  The metallic rasp of razors shearing through hair was almost drowned out by the sobs of the terrified candidates.  I watched, helpless, as they were measured, weighed, their vital signs checked with brutal indifference.  Those deemed unfit were… disposed of.   The metallic thud of a body hitting the ground followed by Jaguar’s cruel laughter echoed in the cavernous space.  "Defective products don't turn a profit, do they?" he cackled, his voice dripping with sadistic glee.

The screams of the dying were barely audible above the clang of the forge. Gio tried everything to wake the unconscious boy—gentle nudges, firmer shakes, eventually resorting to a rather forceful slap. Nothing.  Then, with a look of grim determination, Eve, ever the pragmatist, stepped in.  She quickly assessed the situation, her expression one of calculated efficiency, rather than gleeful mayhem.   With a muttered 'Here we go,'  she swiftly, yet carefully,  lifted the boy's head and splashed cold water on his face.  Beatrice watched, fascinated by this unexpected display of practical ingenuity, rather than taking an active role, her six-year-old mind probably not yet comprehending the full gravity of the situation. The boy, spluttering and sputtering, surfaced with a look of utter bewilderment. After a bit of coughing and spluttering, Gio explained the dire situation, and the boy introduced himself.

"Thank you… for waking me up," the boy gasped, shaking his head. "I forgot to introduce myself last night. I'm Reymart, but you can call me Emat."

Gio, his face etched with relief, replied, “No, I’m the one in your debt. If it weren’t for you, I’d be dead. Thank you.”

The masked men efficiently processed Emat. The whirring clippers were a jarring counterpoint to Emat’s choked pleas, “Not my hair! Anything but my hair!” His desperate protest ended abruptly as the clippers shaved his head clean. He was swiftly herded into another line where individuals received neck implants—each a small, precise puncture followed by a low hiss of machinery.

Next was Gio. The cold weight of the measuring scale registered his slight frame—47 kg. His height, a modest 5'5", was noted. "Vitals good. Blood sample now," the man barked, the words clipped and dispassionate. Gio watched the needle approach, his expression utterly blank. It wasn’t stoicism; it was something more unsettling—an unnerving stillness that unnerved the man preparing the injection.  The needle pierced his skin; there was no flinch, no wince, not even a flicker of acknowledgement. The shaving of his hair was perfunctory, another meaningless act in a series of brutal rituals. He remained unnervingly calm.

The line inched forward. Eve, her youthful face strained with worry, was next, followed by Beatrice, who remained remarkably unconcerned amidst the turmoil. It was Gio’s turn for the implant. The man prepared the instrument, expecting the usual flinch, the cry of pain. But Gio simply stared at the sharp point, his expression unchanging. He remained utterly still as the needle pierced his skin, and the chip was inserted.  The man paused, his expression a mixture of surprise and something akin to fear. This wasn’t the expected reaction.  It was unsettling, the unsettling stillness more disturbing than any scream.

Guided to the ‘labeling’ station, Gio’s impassivity was deeply unnerving. The Black Umbrella symbol and his identification code were etched onto his skin—his right chest and back, his choices mirroring a peculiar acceptance of his fate. He showed no visible reaction to the pain, his expression remaining strangely impassive. The man applying the tattoo paused; he'd seen fear, pain, defiance. But this… this was something else entirely.

The salt spray stings Giovanni's eyes as he opens them, not to the blissful ignorance of a shipwreck survivor, but to the stark, brutal reality of his captivity. He wasn't lost at sea; he was brought here—deliberately, cruelly delivered to this hellish island under the control of Jaguar and "The Black Umbrella." The island is a training ground, a place where broken men are transformed into weapons of unparalleled lethality. Forced to embrace the darkness within, Gio undergoes a harrowing transformation, honing his skills in brutal combat. Yet, as he fights to survive, fragments of his past claw their way into his consciousness, forcing him to confront a truth that is both terrifying and strangely compelling. His struggle is not just for survival; it's a desperate battle against the monstrous identity that Jaguar is forcing upon him, a fight against his own potential for destruction. The chilling truth of how he arrived here fuels his desperate desire to escape.
