PART 10: MR. HONG

PART 10: MR. HONG

Aug 31, 2025

The final candidate, Gio, completed the labeling process. Mr. Hong emerged from the shadows, his face etched with a weariness that belied his earlier jovial demeanor. His gaze swept over the assembled candidates, lingering for a moment on Gio's impassive expression. The corners of his mouth turned down; a sigh escaped his lips. It wasn't pity he felt but a deep-seated weariness, a sense of grim resignation settling over him like a shroud. "Well, that's that," he announced, his voice heavy with exhaustion. "As Mr. Jaguar so eloquently stated, I'll be crafting your weapons. A wide array of choices, from wickedly curved daggers to heavy, brutal axes-you can customize them as much as you like as long as they are efficient and effective. And," he paused, rubbing a hand across his tired face, "I'll be teaching you how to fight-properly. Hand-to-hand combat, the real deal. This is going to be a lot of work. A lot." He cast another weary look at the candidates before disappearing back into the forge's depths.

Jaguar's face reappeared on the massive screen, his usual chilling smile absent. A flicker of genuine displeasure-or perhaps annoyance-crossed his features. "One hundred and eleven? Seriously? That's a letdown, people. You really let me down this time. However... the tagging is done, the chips are implanted. Those monitor your vitals-heart rate, blood pressure, the whole works. You've earned a rest, and you'll get it. Three days. Don't expect much, and don't get comfortable. In three days, I'll be back to see your progress. And," his eyes narrowed, "don't be surprised by the... improvements... I've made to your accommodations." The image flickered and died, leaving the candidates in silence, the weight of his words hanging heavy in the air.

The masked men guided them back to the huts. But something had changed. A small arena, ringed with the same massive screens that had shown Jaguar's face, had been constructed in the center of the compound. Inside the huts themselves, racks of gym equipment and protein supplements stood in stark contrast to the previous sparse furnishings. The masked men remained this time, their presence a constant reminder of their captivity. In the heart of the compound, a crackling fire beckoned, casting long, dancing shadows across the gathered candidates. It was here, surrounded by this incongruous mix of brutal training and forced camaraderie, that they began to share stories, experiences, the flickering candles illuminating faces etched with a mixture of fear and a fragile sense of connection forged from shared suffering.

Candidates shared their names, each one of them except a few. A girl, Seraphinna, moved with a restless energy that made even me, a seasoned observer of feline grace, uneasy. She suddenly turned on a boy, her voice sharp as a claw. "You punk, I told you to get out! I need to change and sleep. Get away from me, you pervert!" She shoved the boy, her movements quick and forceful. He protested, his voice cracking, "B-but I got here first. I don't have anywhere else to go..." He was close to tears. Seraphinna didn't hesitate. "Then sleep outside, you perverted freak," she spat, before disappearing into one of the huts.

The boy, left alone in the dim light, slumped against the wall, his shoulders shaking with quiet sobs. A murmur rippled through the small group, a mixture of hushed whispers and sympathetic glances. "That's Seraphinna," someone whispered. "Yeah... she's pretty, but vicious," another replied. This was the first of the many conflicts to arise among the candidates. The air thrummed with a quiet, simmering tension, the scene unsettling even for a cat like myself.

The salt spray stings Giovanni's eyes as he opens them, not to the blissful ignorance of a shipwreck survivor, but to the stark, brutal reality of his captivity. He wasn't lost at sea; he was brought here—deliberately, cruelly delivered to this hellish island under the control of Jaguar and "The Black Umbrella." The island is a training ground, a place where broken men are transformed into weapons of unparalleled lethality. Forced to embrace the darkness within, Gio undergoes a harrowing transformation, honing his skills in brutal combat. Yet, as he fights to survive, fragments of his past claw their way into his consciousness, forcing him to confront a truth that is both terrifying and strangely compelling. His struggle is not just for survival; it's a desperate battle against the monstrous identity that Jaguar is forcing upon him, a fight against his own potential for destruction.
