SKYREND SAGA: Book 1 - The Hidden Sky

A Mother's Guidance (Revised)

A Mother's Guidance (Revised)

Sep 02, 2025

Aero woke the next morning to the familiar sounds of the Academy coming to life. During his morning run, he found himself paying more attention than usual to the sounds around him. The whisper-quality he'd noticed yesterday seemed slightly more pronounced.

"You're distracted this morning," Kira observed as she joined him for the final lap.

"Just thinking about yesterday's flight evaluation," Aero replied. "Tempest was... different than I expected. More responsive. Like he was reading my intentions before I fully formed them."

"Maybe. Though Instructor Vex seemed pretty impressed with your natural affinity," Kira said with analytical curiosity. "Have you always been unusually good with Sky Beasts, or is this a recent development?"

It was a good question. Looking back, Aero realized he'd always felt comfortable around the Academy's various aerial creatures, but had attributed that to his environment rather than a special ability. "I've never really thought about it systematically," he admitted.

At breakfast, news of his performance had already spread. "My family's been breeding aerial mounts for generations," Marcus Meridian said, joining him, "and even they were impressed when they heard about Tempest's immediate acceptance of you."

Their conversation was interrupted by the arrival of Thane Aetherion. "My family's latest correspondence mentioned some interesting developments in inter-island diplomatic activities," Thane said, settling into a chair. "Increased communication volumes between major houses... Standard diplomatic language for 'something significant is developing.'"

The conversation continued with students sharing fragments of information. Nothing dramatic, but enough to suggest the political environment was becoming more complex.

After breakfast, Aero made his way to Rector Elen's study for a routine check-in. Her study was exactly as he remembered—towering bookshelves, star charts, and the massive cloudwood desk.

"Good morning," he said, settling into 'his' chair. "Though I suspect this isn't just about academic planning, given yesterday's conversations about increased diplomatic complexity."

"Perceptive as always," Elen replied with a warm smile. "First, I want to hear about your Sky Beast evaluation. Instructor Vex sent me a very positive preliminary report."

"Tempest made it easy. He's an incredible creature."

"Tempest has been refusing rider partnerships for months," Elen pointed out with pride. "The fact that he accepted you immediately suggests either exceptional preparation or natural affinity that goes well beyond normal training."

She prepared tea—jasmine, his favorite for processing complex thoughts. "What's really on your mind?" she asked, settling beside him.

Aero articulated his observations about the increased communication activity and diplomatic developments. "I was wondering how that might affect Academy operations."

"Very thoughtful," Elen said approvingly. "We're receiving more communications about political developments. Nothing immediately concerning, but enough to warrant enhanced attention to our role as neutral educational ground. The Academy may be asked to facilitate some preliminary discussions."

"Which brings me to the other reason I wanted to speak with you," she continued, her tone shifting. "We're expecting a special diplomatic visitor—a cultural exchange student from Umbra. Her name is Nyra, and she'll be arriving this evening. I'm assigning you as her Academy guide and cultural liaison."

The assignment felt important. "Why me specifically?"

"Several excellent reasons," Elen said. "You're academically accomplished with demonstrated leadership capabilities and natural diplomatic instincts. Your unique position as my ward has given you exposure to politics without house-specific loyalties. That institutional neutrality is extremely valuable."

The explanation made sense, though Aero sensed additional unspoken strategic layers. "What do you know about her?"

"Frustratingly little. Her name is Nyra, she's seventeen, and she has exceptional academic credentials. Beyond that..." Elen shrugged. "We'll learn more through direct interaction. Her stay is of 'indefinite duration.'"

She leaned forward, her tone becoming more serious. "Umbra doesn't engage in casual diplomatic outreach. If they're initiating cultural exchange now, during increased political complexity, there are probably strategic purposes we don't fully understand yet."

"And you want me to help figure out what those purposes are?"

"I want you to help her feel welcomed and supported," Elen corrected gently but firmly. "If that process also helps us understand Umbra's current concerns, that's a beneficial side effect rather than a primary objective."

The distinction was subtle but important. "Of course. Though should I expect her arrival to be connected to the diplomatic developments?"

"Very probably. The timing isn't coincidental. Umbra has been observing current political developments with the same concern as the major houses. Their decision to engage suggests they believe neutrality and information-sharing have become more strategically important than isolation."

"Which suggests the situation is more serious than public discussion indicates."

"You've always been remarkably quick at identifying connections," Elen said with fondness. "Yes, I believe the current inter-island political environment is more complex and potentially unstable than casual observation would suggest."

She stood, shifting from personal conversation to administrative planning. "Some practical guidance: Be yourself—your natural curiosity and diplomatic instincts are exactly what this requires. But maintain awareness that everything you discuss with Nyra will probably be communicated back to Umbra leadership."

"Should that concern me?"

"Not concern, exactly. But it should encourage thoughtful consideration of how you represent the Academy and its values."

"Understood completely." Aero grinned mischievously. "Should I warn her about my well-established reputation for accidentally discovering interesting information?"

Elen laughed warmly. "Just try to keep your 'accidental discoveries' focused on educationally appropriate topics. We have quite enough diplomatic complexity without you stumbling into administrative secrets."

"When have I ever accidentally stumbled into anything inappropriately sensitive?"

"Would you prefer me to organize that list chronologically or by the level of administrative effort required?" Her mock-stern expression dissolved into affection. "Just be appropriately careful, Aero. Discretion occasionally serves better than brilliance."

"I'll be diplomatically appropriate," he promised.

"I know you will." She smiled with pride and deep confidence. "I'm genuinely glad it's you taking on this responsibility. If anyone can successfully bridge the gap between Academy traditions and Umbra perspectives, it's someone who's learned to navigate between different worlds throughout his entire life."

As he left for his morning classes, Aero found himself anticipating the evening's arrival with excitement mixed with professional seriousness. A cultural exchange student from mysterious Umbra, arriving during a period of increased political activity—it promised to be both educationally fascinating and personally challenging.

The whisper-quality in the air seemed slightly more pronounced, though it was probably just his imagination responding to the anticipation. Whatever was developing, Aero was certain his life was about to become significantly more interesting. And unlike most students, he was genuinely looking forward to discovering what that complexity would bring.

In a world where the elite rule from floating citadels and power is measured in bloodlines and blades, Aero Skybound is an anomaly—the orphaned ward of Rector Elen, the most feared figure in Caelus Academy. To some, he is a spy. To others, a weapon. To all, he is a threat.

When whispers of war stir among the floating kingdoms, Aero finds himself at the center of a deadly game. The Aetherion Envoy, a faction shrouded in ambition and shadow, has marked him for reasons unknown. But the Rector did not raise him to be stolen. She raised him to be something more.

Now, as political storms gather and old grudges ignite, Aero must navigate a world where loyalty is currency, trust is a weakness, and the only way to survive is to master the winds before they tear him apart.
