Secrets of the Beginning Star: The Journey of the Cognizant

Chapter 8: Journey to the Kingdom of Blessing

Chapter 8: Journey to the Kingdom of Blessing

Sep 07, 2025

The air in the main castle was still cool and damp, thick with the scent of old paper and metal, but now, it carried a faint breeze of hope. Banarf looked at Abid, her gray eyes shining with a new glow of life. "I have found the meaning I was searching for, Knight," she said, her voice quiet but full of determination. "Not just a cure for my curse, but a deeper understanding of my existence. Now, I want to find new meaning, to break curses, not just my own." Banarf's words echoed in Abid's heart, reassuring him that his good deeds echoed throughout the fabric of existence, that goodness had true value, even in a world that might be only a story.

Abid nodded with a quiet smile. "You have shown me that will and determination are stronger than any curse, Banarf, stronger even than any written text." He, too, felt a renewed inner strength. His Wisdom had risen to 30 points and his Intelligence to 25.

As they sat near the stone altar that held the "Heart of the Dwarves," Abid recalled the inscriptions he had just deciphered. "These inscriptions speak of the energy of the Primordial Star as 'the prime mover that powers the mountains and directs all living things,' and describe the Scribe as 'the architect of reality.' But there are more secrets, Banarf. My old maps, which I found in the 'Gedi Collection,' point to other locations that may contain more clues. Perhaps the most important of these is the search for ways to help others from curses, especially after your experience."

Banarf thought for a moment, then her eyes gleamed. "The Kingdom of Blessing," she said, "I've heard a lot about it in the tales of merchants and dwarves who have traveled to the surface. It's a human kingdom renowned for its advanced healing and healing techniques and for its markets brimming with artifacts. Perhaps we can find something there that will help us understand curses more deeply, or even artifacts that will protect us from potential future curses." She spoke enthusiastically, her revival giving her new motivation. Abid sensed Banarf's enthusiasm and realized this was the next logical course. "Excellent idea, Banarf. We could sell some of the artifacts we don't need to raise capital and buy what we need. But what can we sell?" Abid asked, examining the small leather bag that somehow held items but weighed nothing. Banarf grinned wickedly, approaching a pile of rubble. "During my desperate wanderings in this forsaken city, I came across some treasures that were of no use to me while I was cursed. But now, they might be useful. Take this," she said, carefully extracting a gilt wooden chalice inscribed with a labyrinth and a platinum-plated silk brocade breastplate. "This is not like our scepter or your medallion; its value lies in its beauty, not its substance." These items were valuable, but they did not hold the deep secrets they sought, so they didn't hesitate to sell them. After hours of planning and gathering what supplies they could, Abid and Banarf set out from the buried dwarven city. The journey to the Kingdom of the Blessing required them to return to the surface first, then travel across parts of the vast continent of Seria. As they navigated the rocky tunnels, Banarf used her new ability, Stoneshaping, to repair some of the dangerous passages, much to Abid's admiration. This support was tangible, adding a new layer of security to their journey. Arriving in the Kingdom of Baraka: Mudkip City

After days of travel by sea from the city of Nozandum in the Kindwan Empire, they arrived at Mudkip City, the capital of the Kingdom of Baraka. The atmosphere was a far cry from what they had experienced in the fortified cities of the dwarves or the valleys of the dragon clan. Instead of icy mountains or volcanic rocks, they were greeted by a vast green plain stretching as far as the eye could see, dotted with carefully cultivated fields and interspersed with rivers that sparkled in the day. The scent of wildflowers mingled with the aroma of the cities, giving the place a sense of peace and fertility.

Mudkip was an urban human city, its white buildings and golden domes glittering under a clear blue sky. Its towering spires were reflected in the surrounding rivers, and its streets were alive with life. Merchants of various races, elegantly dressed humans, and the joyful shouts of children all created an atmosphere of activity and vitality. Abid felt a little nervous. After months of isolation and searching, this density of people was a new experience. But his charisma and wisdom helped him blend in calmly.

Banarf's gray eyes widened in amazement at the city's beauty. "I've never seen anything like this," she whispered to Abid, a broad smile spreading across her face. "Our city, 'Sholam,' was grand, but it was underground. Here, beauty touches the sky." She was filled with joy, the joy of regaining freedom and living amidst such beauty after years of pain and isolation.

The two of them wandered through the bustling markets. Banarf longed to see human crafts, while Abid focused on gathering information. They asked about the most famous auction houses and places where artifacts were bought and sold. They found a large market known as the "Market of Shining Stars," where the most valuable collectibles were displayed and major auctions were held.

The next day, they headed to Mudkip's Grand Auction House, a lavish building with white marble walls and a glass ceiling that allowed the light of the Beginning Star to pour into the hall. The place was bustling with nobles, the wealthy, and collectors from all over. The overlapping sounds of conversation, bargaining, and laughter filled the air. Abid felt a slight discomfort in his heart. He was unfamiliar with this world, one where wealth was valued above all else. But he remembered his noble purpose and that this wealth would be a means to a deeper understanding of the truth and the protection of others.

They presented the items they had brought from Dwarven City: the gilded wooden chalice and the silk brocade. They were valued at thousands of gold pieces, surprising Banarf, who had never imagined that such useless junk could fetch such riches. She felt overwhelmed with happiness; this money would help them on their journey and in their search for a cure for others.

As the auction raged, and as they watched the precious artifacts being offered, Abid spotted a woman sitting in the back rows, out of sight. She was a human knight, wearing scaly armor, with snow-white hair and amber eyes. She looked exhausted and in pain, and despite her extraordinary beauty, a deep sadness enveloped her. Her eyes were fixed on an artifact being offered for sale: a small silver amulet engraved with a withered flower. This woman was Iormed.

Unnoticed, Abid used his new ability, "Appraise the Supernatural," to focus on the amulet on display, then on Iormed. His ability revealed that the amulet was known as the "Pendant of the Weeping Flower" and that it had been used in ancient rituals to absorb negative energy but was weak and ineffective against powerful curses. As for Iormed, the assessment revealed that she was indeed "cursed by an ancient curse," and that this curse caused her chronic pain and general weakness, fitting her condition as a good knight seeking to free herself from it.

Abid felt a surge of deep sympathy for Iormed. Her story was similar to Banarf's before she was freed. "She seeks a cure for herself," Abid whispered to Banarf, explaining what he had discovered with his ability. Banarf looked at Iormed, remembering her years of pain and torment. "Poor thing," Banarf said softly, "I know exactly how you feel." Banarf's feelings for Iormed were strong, a mixture of grief for her condition and hope that she might find healing as she had.

Iormed tried to bid on the amulet, but the price quickly rose beyond her ability to pay. Abid and Banarf saw the expression of despair on her face. She bowed her head in deep sorrow, then quietly stood up and left the auction room. Despair was etched in her features, as if all hope had evaporated from her eyes.

When it was their turn, they sold their items, raising a sizable sum of money. They then began searching for artifacts that could help protect them from curses. After careful scrutiny, Abid settled on a "bronze ring inscribed with a word of protection" and a "black pearl necklace," which he believed could serve as symbolic defenses against certain negative influences. These items weren't powerful enough to completely remove a curse, but they were a good start.

After the auction, Abid and Banarf decided to leave Mudkip to continue their journey toward the "Ruined Shrine." Abid thought about Iormed and her struggle, which had stirred in him a strong desire to help. As they left the city gates and onto a dirt road that wound around the green hills, they spotted Iormed walking alone, her shoulders slumped. Her expression betrayed deep sadness, as if she bore the weight of the world on her shoulders. Abid was about to approach her when they suddenly heard a loud neigh of horses and harsh shouts coming from the trees. "Stand still! "It's a bandit!" a gruff voice shouted. A group of six men appeared, wearing tattered leather armor and wielding swords and spears. Their faces were covered with cloth masks, but their eyes gleamed with greed and malice. They were likely bandits whose fame spread across Seria. "All you have, or your lives!" one of them shouted, pointing his sword. Iormed stiffened, clutching her waraxe, but she looked weak. Her curse was sapping her strength, making her an easy target for these bandits. She felt despair gnawing at her again. How could she fight with such depleted strength? Tears were choking her, but she refused to give up.

Abid and Banarf charged immediately. "Back off, you idiots!" Abid shouted in his deep voice, raising his great axe, its bronze scales glowing in the daylight. "No harm shall come to her!" His anger was rising, his good nature rejecting injustice.

"A dragonknight! And a dwarf! What fat prey!" one of the bandits cackled, ignoring Abid's obvious strength. "Let's get rid of them first, then take what they have!"

Three bandits rushed Abid, while the rest headed for Banarf and Iormed. Abid felt excitement rising in his chest. He was ready to fight. Using his strength and agility, backed by his mastery, Abid dodged the first blow of one of the bandits, then landed a powerful blow with his great axe against the bandit's shield, shattering it. Abid was not seeking direct killing but to strip them of their ability to fight.

Meanwhile, Banarf used her new supernatural abilities. When one of the bandits tried to strike her with his sword, a shimmering silver "shield" appeared around her, protecting her from the blow. Then she placed her hand on the ground and shouted, "Stone formation!" Rocks rose from the ground, forming a solid barrier between her and the other bandits, repelling them from Iormed.

Iormed watched in amazement. She had seen hope fading from her, but these strangers, whom she had only seen at the auction, came to her aid. Regaining some of her morale, she raised her waraxe and rushed toward the remaining bandits. Despite her chronic pain, she fought bravely, landing powerful blows with her axe, but she was quickly affected by exhaustion. Her heart ached with pain, not only from her curse but also from her inability to effectively protect herself.

Abid realized Iormed's weakness. As he parried another blow from one of the bandits, he looked at Banarf. "Banarf! Try to protect her!" he shouted. "We have to end this quickly!" Banarf had finished forming the barrier and began using her Iron Mind ability to protect herself from any psychic attack, focusing on helping Iormed.

Caught between Abid's immense power and Banarf's superdwarf abilities, despair began to creep into their hearts. They were mere bandits facing a force beyond their imagination. "Run! We can't resist them!" one of them shouted. They began to retreat, scattering in different directions. Neither Abid nor Banarf caught up with them; their primary goal was to protect Iormed and avoid excessive violence.

After the bandits left, there was relative calm. Iormed sank to her knees, her eyes brimming with tears, this time of relief and gratitude. She had been on the verge of giving in to despair, but Abid and Banarf appeared as saviors.

Banarf ran over to her and placed a sympathetic hand on her shoulder. "Are you okay?" she asked, her voice filled with warmth. She remembered all too well the feeling of pain and helplessness.

Iormed raised her head, her amber eyes staring at Abid and Banarf. "I have no words to thank you," she said, her voice strained and barely audible. "You saved me from a fate worse than death." Then she looked at Abid curiously. "How... how did you manage to do it? That strength, that shield you showed, Dwarf... I've never seen anything like it before."

Abid calmly explained their journey, their discoveries about the Scribe and the Star of Beginning, and their supernatural powers. He told her how Banarf had also been cursed with the "Curse of Chronic Pain" and how she had been able to break free using the "Dwarven Heart."

When Iormed heard Banarf's story, her eyes gleamed with new hope. "So... there is hope for undoing my curse as well?" She asked, her voice trembling, some of her vitality returning. "I have sought a cure for years, in this kingdom of Baraka and others, but to no result. They told me it was a curse that could not be broken, that it was part of my destiny as a human knight."

"Nothing is impossible, Iormed," Abid said, his voice quiet but full of confidence. "Especially if your curse, like Banarf's, is 'a fault in the fabric of your personal reality.' Our world is not as simple as we imagine, and there are faults that can be righted." He spoke with the words of Elder Nardan etched in his mind.

Iormed thought deeply. These strangers, the wise dragon knight and the warrior dwarf, possessed knowledge and power she had never seen before. They had saved her without hesitation, and their words held a rare sincerity. She felt a strange attraction to Abid, not only for his distinctive appearance but also for his wisdom and deep compassion.

"Knight Abid, dwarf Banarf," Iormed said, standing tall, despite the pain. "I owe you my life. If there is any hope of lifting my curse, please allow me to join your journey. My experience as a human knight and my knowledge of these regions can be of use to you. I want to find healing, and I want to understand the nature of these curses and errors you speak of."

Abid looked at Banarf, and she smiled broadly. "Welcome, Iormed!" Banarf said enthusiastically. "Every new ally to share this burden is a blessing."

Abid felt a deep joy fill his heart. He had found a new ally, another victim of the "errors" of this world. With Iormed, their journey would become more powerful and varied.
