Threads of Darkness: The Black Salvation Cult

Abid continued his investigation, tracking the spread of the disease through the city. His keen observations and gathered information led him to a network of ancient sewers beneath the most affected districts. Banarf, with her specialized knowledge of the tunnels and underground passages, proved invaluable.

Abid and Banarf infiltrated the sewers, the stench and utter darkness enveloping them. Abid used his large axe to clear a path through the muck and debris. Banarf, stoic as a mountain dweller, felt comfortable in this subterranean environment, yet remained vigilant.

Deep within the sewers, they discovered a hidden chamber, not part of the regular drainage system. The chamber was dimly lit by dark crystals, and a distinct sense of malevolence hung in the air. In the center of the chamber, they found strange devices made of metal and dark wood, emitting a thick, black mist that was being pumped into the city's ventilation system.

Abid used his "Supernatural Item Appraisal" ability on the devices and crystals. The ability revealed that these devices were not natural. They utilized crystals imbued with "Starfire" energy, but corrupted and twisted, transforming its life-giving energy into a negative, disease-causing force.

The black mist was a concentrated "plague" (a supernatural effect that inflicted continuous, debilitating damage on creatures). It was pumped into the city's air. It was a collective curse, a forced intrusion into the fabric of the city's reality. On the walls of the chamber, they found strange carvings and symbols, along with writings in a language Abid didn't recognize. He used his "Mind Stimulate" ability again, ignoring the throbbing headache. The writings revealed the name of the organization: "Salvation Through Darkness." Their philosophy was that the dominant races (humans, dwarves, and elves) lived in artificial prosperity thanks to the "Scribe," while the lesser and outcast races suffered. They believed this plague was a "purification" of reality, a rebalancing of "Serin's Tale," preparing the world for the emergence of a new order, led by the races that "understood the Scribe's profound truth." This discovery filled Abid with a cold fury at the exploitation of these secrets for such evil purposes. Suddenly, they heard sounds from the corridor. Two figures wearing black masks appeared, each carrying a metal tube. Their movements were swift and silent, showing combat skill. "Intruders!" one of them shouted and began to aim his metal tube at them. A thick black mist poured from it, resembling a miniature version of the plague. Abid rushed towards them, his large axe glowing in the darkness. "We must stop them!" Abid shouted, gripped by a sense of righteous fury. Abid used his strength, agility, and skill to dodge the plague spores, then struck forcefully with his axe at one of the attackers' pipes, shattering it. Abid wasn't aiming to kill but to neutralize the threat.

Meanwhile, Banarf activated her abilities. When the other attacker tried to attack her, a shimmering silver "protective shield" appeared around her, shielding her from the spores. Then, she placed her hand on the ground and spoke words in the ancient Dwarven tongue, "Stone Formation!" Rocks rose from the ground, forming a solid barrier between her and the attacker, trapping him.

The two attackers were stronger than they expected. One of them let out a harsh laugh, then suddenly vanished into thin air, as if he had never been there. "They're using supernatural powers!" Banarf exclaimed. "An 'invisibility' or 'phantom body' ability!" This showed how dangerous the organization was.

Abid took advantage of this and grabbed the second attacker, who was trapped. He tried to interrogate him, but the attacker closed his eyes, a flash of black light emanated from him, and he vanished into thin air, leaving behind only a piece of black cloth and a mask. They had "disappeared," or perhaps "teleported," leaving Abid and his companion furious and frustrated.

"They escaped!" Banarf shouted angrily. "What audacity!"

Hopes for "Removing the Curse"

Abid and Banarf returned to the surface to tell Iormed what they had discovered about the "Black Salvation" organization and the cursed plague. Iormed listened in astonishment, her despair in her eyes turning into fierce anger. "How wicked they are! They use the power of the star to kill innocent people!" Abid realized they couldn't leave the town like this. "We must stop this plague," Abid said resolutely. "And we can find a cure for Iormed at the same time." While they were speaking with a local doctor in Old Hall, an elderly man named Maximus, who had dedicated his life to studying incurable diseases, mentioned sorrowfully, "I've heard in ancient legends of a rare ability, beyond healing with medicine or herbs. It's said to be the ability to 'lift a curse,' to 'reweave the fabric of life,' or 'purify the body and soul of hidden evils.' But it's just a legend; I've never seen it." Iormed's eyes shone with a light Abid had never seen before. Hope flickered within her tormented soul. "A curse-lifting ability?" Iormed whispered, struggling to stand. "Does that mean... my curse can be broken?" Her words were filled with hope, tinged with fear of further disappointment. Abid looked at Iormed, then at Banarf, who nodded encouragingly. "Indeed, Iormed," Abid said confidently. "If so, then a curse-lifting ability is the power that corrects these flaws, restoring reality to its natural state. Banarf was able to break her curse with the 'Heart of the Dwarves,' and this ability might be even more powerful and comprehensive."

Iormed felt a surge of inner strength coursing through her veins, despite her physical weakness. The pain no longer held her quite so tightly. This newfound hope was the flame that kept her alive. "I want to learn it," Iormed said, her eyes filled with longing. "Or find someone who knows how to use it. For myself... and for these innocent people suffering from this plague."

Abid and his companions decided to immediately begin searching for ways to learn the "curse-breaking" ability, or how to use it to heal Iormed and end the plague. This task was of equal importance to finding the ruined shrine, perhaps even more urgent.

They returned to the Library of Forgotten Secrets in Erevin and consulted Ainar again. Ainar explained that the "curse-breaking" ability wasn't just a spell to be learned from a book. "It is a very rare ability," Ainar said, "requiring a deep understanding of how the energy of the 'Star of Beginnings' works and flows within living beings. It is said to require the user to be able to 'reweave' the threads of reality on an energetic level, not merely to use supernatural powers."

Ainar added, "There is a legend about ancient beings, guardians of knowledge, who lived in the ruined shrine before its collapse. They mastered this ability, and it is said they used artifacts resembling 'dwarf hearts' to focus the energy. Some legends even mention that the ruined shrine itself contained a 'healing chamber,' where even the most complex curses could be cleansed."

Abid connected the dots in his mind. The ruined shrine wasn't just a place of the scribe's and the star's secrets but also the key to breaking curses. This information filled him with an indescribable sense of purpose. It meant that the two missions were not separate but intertwined. If they found the shrine, they might find answers to the plague, the curse of Iormed, and the scribe's greatest secrets. Abid looked at his companions. Banarf's eyes were filled with determination, and Iormed's shone with newfound hope and an unexpected inner strength. Abid felt a profound sense of responsibility, but he was confident that together they could overcome any challenge. "So, our objective is clear," Abid said in a calm but resolute voice, "the ruined shrine. We will seek the means to lift the curse, we will destroy the Black Salvation, we will heal Iormed, and we will eradicate this plague. All for truth and freedom." With each word, their resolve grew stronger. The journey to the ruined shrine was still fraught with danger, but now they possessed a shared purpose stronger than any obstacle. Their hearts were filled with determination and hope.
