Massive screens lit up the Downtown District of the city of Platinum as the logo of Four Seasons Media appeared on screen. It was one of Nidel's news broadcasts. Nidal had long been a host of the news programs in Platinum City ever since moving there from what used to be California. It was widely believed he became an immortal in the 1950s, but no one was particularly sure. Everyone knew that he was one of the first African-American hosts in the region who was of magical descent. It was generally believed that he was an ancestor of Peri, the first major hero in North America.
"Good morning, Platinum City. The weeks are approaching for the first hero tryouts this year. Usually, they occur in the fall, but this year's event has been moved up to July due to the special hosts and judges. The hero tryouts are the only available time in a year in which Heroes and prospective people are allowed to get a hero license to operate as a superhero within Platinum City. With the influx of magic users immigrating from Wonderland and Neverland, we have the first-ever year where we have more magic users than we actually have bio weapons applying for a hero license. Four Seasons Media is proud to announce that we are actually one of the major news corporations licensed to cover these events in collaboration with a very special guest. This is the first year in decades that Radon will not be hosting the event. This could be a result of the discovery of their black site in Legion Redwood. It was also found that there was a major security breach there, resulting in the release of the bomber Kina Ito. The government of Platinum City likely worried that this would ban Radon, and their parent organization, CROWN. Now I transfer this broadcast over to Ari Mohammed." Nigal said with a large, warm smile on his face. He was clearly excited to see what his protege had to offer.
Then the camera view split to show a Middle Eastern reporter wearing a dark yellow hijab. She wore conservative clothing that matched the color of her hijab. Her clothes had sun-like patterns on them.
"Thank you, Nidal. I am here at Jack O'Lantern Stadium to interview the members of Staff running the events. I just got exclusive word that one of the participants this year is Sahara Hao, daughter of the legendary heroes Maya and Lee. She is also the niece of the head prosecutor of Platinum City, Sakshi Gupta. What is so interesting about this contender is not only her extremely influential family, but also the fact that there are rumors that she has created a new type of magic. Whether or not the rumors are true is unclear, though. It could be the first time in a long time that we get a new type of leader, especially with other contenders like Pepper, the princess of Candyland. Whose participation could result in candy being considered for an official type designation by the government." Ari said cheerfully.
"Wasn't there another contender that people have their eyes on?" Nidal said.
"How could I forget Lea Apple-lin. Who honestly has one of the weirdest last names of any contestant, if I have to be honest. In her promotional video, she states that she wants to follow in the footsteps of the greatest hero in North America, Peri D'Amboise. Even took up her old hero name of Rainbow Ranger. What's so interesting about her is that she's like Peri before her; she can seem to use every type of magic at least from her initial assessment, which would make her one of the first heroes in several thousand years to do so. What's even more interesting is that it's been implied by many that Lea and Sahara have a long-standing rivalry that may come out during the assessment. I have been told by administrators that there is going to be a battle tournament between the contestants for their licenses, with exemptions for some support mages." Ari's smile almost pierced through the screen.
Sahara almost felt attacked by that smile through the screen. She watched the broadcast as she passed by her way to school, where they were lining up to go on a field trip for the students in the hero track. The field trip was only supposed to begin at ten, but she was there at six a.m. She always arrived this early, as Sakshi expected a high standard of punctuality for all School events. Sahara was way too scared to go against her aunt, especially after how much Sakshi had done for her when her father passed. Sahara helped the student body set the trip up and made sure that all of the preparations were ready, as it was not just her high school going to this event, as the nearby Middle School would also be participating. Due to an error, a lot of the middle schoolers had already arrived due to their buses, so Sahara, as class president, decided to organize which high schoolers would be paired up with which middle schoolers. One of the main goals of this trip was to force the high schoolers to learn responsibility for citizens, specifically within the hero class. This is because a requirement for those under the age of eighteen to get a hero license required them to participate directly within their school's course curriculum for hero work. Include community service hours, the last of which required a field trip with either the elementary or middle school kids within their area to a hero organization building to learn about the history of heroes within their city.
