An interesting symbiotic ethos of mutual sacrificial support has arisen between the pack and the herd.
“Help us protect ourselves from all other predators, and strive to feed yourselves as much as possible with other prey. In exchange, you may eat our naturally or accidentally dead, the placenta from our afterbirth, but also you may mercifully put down our suffering members and any severely deformed newborns.
Only if all else fails, you simply cannot find enough food no matter how hard you try for too long and you are on the brink of starvation, but HAVE nonetheless kept your end of the bargain, will we draw lots, to see which amongst us will be sacrificed so that you can survive.”, is the gist of their relationship, I’m fairly certain.
Dead wolves, in turn, are buried in the meadows where they graze so to help the grass grow.

When animals considered to be "prey" by the apex predators of the world begin to band together for safety, where does it leave those caught in between?
Namely, a pair of pine martens, carnivores and flesh-eaters themselves, but small enough to be considered food for the bears, wolves and gluttons of the forest and field. They're on a journey to seek sanctuary with the rabbits, squirrels and other prey that have gathered to Oren--but they don't know if welcome or condemnation will meet them.
