Chapter 10 : A Fanboy in Disguise

Chapter 10 : A Fanboy in Disguise

Sep 22, 2025

Morning arrived and Jin ah was doing her usual routine. Work out, taking a bath, breakfast.

Today was Monday. The ramyeon shop was closed for the day.

Her phone rang, and the name on the screen was "Dae." She brightened instantly. Kim Dae Bin, her childhood friend, even though he was a year older than her.

She took the call, and a voice spoke, "Hey, Kakashi simp. I'm free today from my residency at the hospital. You know what we're going to do?"

She grinned. "Right back at you, Sakura simp. But yes, that means I'm going to your place to play, right?"

"Obviously," Dae said.

"Then I'm on my way!"

She grabbed her hoodie, got out, and locked the door. She paused, remembering how Jang Beom Seok looked so dejected after she was honest with him. Calling someone handsome generic was kind of harsh, but he had asked for her honest opinion, which was, well, "generic." On her way to Dae's place, she passed by some handsome and beautiful people. Right, this is why it's generic, she thought. Sometimes in life, you just pass good-looking people.

While she had seen one drama once and was never interested again, she had to admit the actor was good-looking. But then again, how could people grab others' interest if they weren't good-looking? And idols, even if she never watched them, she was sure they were good-looking people. She sighed in annoyance. As she walked, she heard an idol song, which must be his "bias," then.

Then she heard a passing girl's voice say, "It's ZX0's song! I really like Yunwoo oppa's voice!"

Jin ah blinked. Zero times Zero. So it wasn't BTSB, then. Man, idol group names are something else, she thought.

Anyway, it was time to focus on her walk. The Raikiri vs. Shannaro rematch on PS2 was about to happen again.

She arrived at Dae's place. Like her, Dae's dream was inspired by the Naruto show. While hers was Ichiraku Ramen, his was Sakura's job as a healer. He dedicated himself to becoming a doctor and was now a resident. Both of them had truly reached their dreams.

They had been two school outcasts. "Weirdo Jin ah" and "Dae the beaver." Despite coming from different backgrounds—Jin ah from the working class and Dae from the upper class—they had become friends because she found him to be a loyal friend in elementary school. Playing on the PS2 was just for the sake of nostalgia and the fun of Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja 5.

She knocked on his apartment door, and Dae opened it. The once buck-toothed Dae was now a good-looking Dae.

He grinned. "Jin ah, you arrived!"

Jin ah grinned back. "Of course."

Then they did their best friend handshake. They made a fast ninja handshake on each hand: dog, monkey, boar, hare, serpent, horse, and bird. He then pulled her inside.

Hand in hand, they arrived at the room. The PlayStation was already on, and it was set up for player vs. player, with Kakashi on player 2 with Tsunade as a linked character, and Sakura on player 1 with Naruto as a linked character.

Both of them sat down and took their controllers.

Dae looked at her. "Unlimited chakra and no time limit, like usual?"

Jin ah nodded. "Like usual."

Soon, the room filled with the sounds of two grown people screaming their characters' names and special moves. "Shannaro!!" and "Raikiri!!" echoed from the speakers as both of them spammed their chakra attacks.

After an intense round of button-mashing, one of the players finally lands a finishing blow. The room is quiet for a moment as they both catch their breath.

Dae puts his controller down and stretches. "Whew! My hands are numb. You're still as ruthless with Kakashi as ever."

Jin ah smiles faintly. "You know it."

He looks at her, his expression a little more serious now. "You seem kind of distracted, though. Something on your mind?"

She shrugs, looking down at her controller. "It's nothing, just... something I said to a person yesterday."

"Oh yeah?"

"Yeah. He asked for my honest opinion, and I was... maybe a little too honest. I told him that being handsome is just generic to me now."

Dae laughs. "Ha! That person must always get praised for being good looking. Having you said that…Haha, he deserve it."

Sometimes she forgets that the bullying of Dae's looks made him have hate for someone who is good-looking too. Ironically, after his teeth were fixed, Dae is now part of the handsome crowd. But she knew one thing: if someone praised Dae for being handsome, that person would get Dae's instant ire and annoyance.

"He was just some random guy at the ramyeon shop, though from that talk I think we got closer," she continued with a shrug. "Guess based on how surprised he was, I think he's really popular."

Dae snorted. "Good riddance. If he's really popular, then he must have a massive ego. Heck, even belittling someone who's not good-looking at all."

He got up from the floor, stretching his legs and sighing. "My back is going to kill me later. Want anything to drink?"

"Got any Strawberry milk?" she asked, leaning back against the couch.

"Yeah, I think I have some. Be right back," he said, padding into the kitchen.

She was still thinking about the random guy from the day before. The way his eyes had looked so genuinely shocked, almost wounded, when she said "generic." She couldn't help but feel a little bit of guilt. He had seemed like a nice guy, just a little... vain. She'd probably see him again next week, right? Maybe she could apologize. She laughed to herself. Apologize for what? For being honest? She quickly dismissed the thought.

Dae returned a moment later with two bottles, banana and strawberry. He handed one to her and sat back down.

"The way you talk about this guy, it sounds like he's someone you'd actually want to be friends with," Dae said, taking a sip of his banana milk.

Jin ah paused, looking at her reflection in the milk's surface. "I don't know about that. He's just... different. And well….he's a fanboy of BTSB, Bomsok."

Dae choked and coughed. "W-wait? He's a fanboy of the boy group that other female residents talk about?!"

Jin ah nodded. "Yeah. Despite being popular, I think he can't be himself. Someone who likes a boy idol group gets a lot of scrutiny."

Dae winced. "That's... yeah. If a guy who is popular does that... I think someone will bully him."

Jin ah added, "And he disguised himself. He wore a medical mask and glasses. He must be really popular if he needs to disguise himself."

Dae blinked. "He disguised himself?"

Jin ah nodded. "Mm-hmm, a hoodie, messy hair, glasses, and a medical mask."

Dae said, "Is he projecting his bias's disguise then?"

Jin ah shrugged. "Not really. I think he just doesn't want people, or well, women, hounding him because he's really good-looking."

Dae grimaced. "...Right. Being good-looking , people will hound you, and being bad-looking, people will belittle you...."

Jin ah pointed. "And you're now part of the good-looking people, Dae."

Dae grimaced. "And I hate it. If I were still 'Dae the beaver,' I'm pretty sure they wouldn't talk with me. Maybe they would talk because I'm smart and useful for other medical students, just as I am now as a resident."

Both fell into a moment of silence.

Then Dae looked at her. "Round two?"

"Round two," she agreed.

Dae picked up his controller with a smirk. "Last one to hit a ultimate attack is a loser."

"You're on!" Jin ah shot back, her thumb already on the chakra button.

The second round was even more chaotic than the first. The screen filled with a chaotic flurry of special moves and jutsu. Jin ah's Kakashi teleported behind Sakura, but Dae's Naruto jumped in to block. A moment later, Jin ah yelled, "Raikiri!!" as she charged forward, only to be met with Dae's powerful "Shannaro!!" as Sakura.

Dae used an ultimate move, but Jin ah dodged it. "You lost!" she declared. Her ultimate move on Kakashi went on, and she was faster. Kakashi's victory animation played on the screen as Dae slumped back against the couch in defeat.

"No way! I lose again!" he complained. "You had Tsunade backing you up!"

Jin ah just laughed. "And you had Naruto the main character!"

"Hmph," he grumbled, though a grin was still on his face. "Fine. You win this time. But the next rematch will be mine."

The room was filled with noise again as they began to set up for another game.

Jang Beom Seok isn't just an idol; he's a phenomenon. As the "golden maknae" of the legendary group BTSB, he's lived his entire life under a spotlight, polished to perfection since he was a child actor. His face is on every billboard, his name is on everyone's lips, and his vanity is as famous as his talent. But after a decade of manufactured smiles and relentless scrutiny, Beom Seok is desperately lonely. He craves one thing money and fame can't buy: a normal life.

Armed with a flimsy disguise—a medical mask, a gray hoodie, and the hope that no one will look too closely—he escapes into the anonymous streets of Seoul. His sanctuary becomes a small, quiet ramyeon shop, far from the screaming fans and flashing cameras.

There, he meets Seo Jin-ah.

To Jin-ah, Beom Seok isn't a superstar; he's just "Bomsok's Fanboy"—a slightly weird, overly handsome college student who shares a name with her customer's favorite idol. She’s more likely to recognize the voice of her favorite anime character than the face of Korea's top idol. She’s blunt, unimpressed by his looks, and utterly uninterested in the glamorous world he represents.
