'Lesnama'. From 'leuksna' and 'man', meaning 'moonlight'.
It was the name of Mr Ashliford's people. They were from the far, extreme north. Curly blond – sometimes brown – hair and blue, or lavender eyes. Half the year in his home country was lit by the moon and stars. It was so cold that the cities had been built from ice and stone.
Then their nation was destroyed a few decades before The War of Hate.
They had been scattered ever since.
It was only the 3rd day of school and Mr Ashliford knew that something was wrong; he could feel it in his bones., quite literally. Apperantly, so could Mimi. When he finally got home from work she was making an awful racket, demanding to get out and that was never a good sign. Seeing her bolt into the garage and start going after the closed garage door, he knew that something serious was wrong.
As a Lesnama cat Mimi's entire lineage was bred for such things.
He closed and locked the door leading into the house, jumped back into his car, told Mimi to get in – she did – and used the remote to open the garage door.
The car still running and both of them out of sight of anyone (thank-you civic planners for all the trees and parks!) Mr Ashliford opened the passenger side door without leaving the car.
“Go find Etsu.” He ordered Mimi.
At the cat's hesitation he added, “I'll follow in the car; I can't sense her loca-”
Mimi bolted.
He closed the door and followed.
