This question here is the one that put this comic into motion, and the one I'm looking to answer through it. Honestly: I still don't know the answer, so I hope I can explore it along the way.
What remains true for me is this: that biological sex is a lottery, the same as the colour of your eyes, your height, your skin colour, the amount of fat your body naturally accumulates, your basic health, the country you are born in, the resources your family has... even your abilities and your nuclear personality. When you are born, you are given a bundle of all these things and are asked to live with it as best as you can.
That's inherently unfair. Like nature. Like life. Like the prevailing human society, which was built upon unfairness and shaped by unfair people who extended their unfair view to the rest.
But not everything we are taught is true and, definitely, not everything that we are taught helps us carry our given bundles more easily.
Which is always true is that we can choose.
Of course, we can do little to change our given bundle, but we can choose how to deal with it.
So... why choose suffering? Why limit ourselves further? Why guide ourselves by society's preconceptions if they hurt us? Why accept the idea that sex aligns with gender, which is in truth a personality trait? Why accept gender roles which limit our personality and our choices through social control?
I guess... because it's hard and exhausting to live your life swimming countercurrent.
But it feels like it's that, or losing yourself.
...
Woah... I didn't intend to turn this post into a manifesto, but it seems that's what I needed, so... thanks for accompanying me. I wish you the best days ahead.
Big heartfelt hug <3
