After the Journey

The Promise to the Stars, Part 1

The Promise to the Stars, Part 1

Nov 13, 2025

Nicolas nodded, his expression one of solemn approval and resolve. He handed the sword back to her, its golden hilt gleaming under the light.

“Then take it, Star Rosalind. Not as the successor to the Blonde Hero—but as the hero Atlantia needs right now. May its light guide you, as it once guided all of us.”

Star accepted the sword, its warmth spreading through her body, as if acknowledging her determination. She glanced at her friends, then at Nicolas.

The burden of destiny no longer felt so heavy. Instead, it felt like a promise—a promise she would keep.

Suddenly, King Nicolas rose from his throne and strode past Star and her companions. He turned back and spoke to her directly.

“Star, would you accompany me to meet the people outside the palace? I believe that with your presence, they might find a glimmer of hope.”

Star looked to her friends, and they all nodded in agreement.

“Of course, Your Majesty. My friends and I will accompany you to meet the people in the city.”

Nicolas gave a faint smile, relief flickering in his eyes. Without delay, Star and the others followed as the king stepped outside the palace.

The streets of Valhalla bustled with activity, but it was the kind born of fear and desperation. King Nicolas walked with steady steps, his posture regal yet compassionate, flanked by Star and her companions.

It was a city teeming not with the energy of a thriving capital, but with the restless chaos of a people caught in the eye of a storm.

Nidhogg’s wrath had driven many from their homes on the outskirts, and now Valhalla was overflowing with refugees from every corner of the region—each of them in dire need of shelter.

The air hung heavy with anxiety. People gathered in the main square, unsure where to go, unsure how to survive.

As they moved through the streets, Star studied the faces around her. Worry lined every brow, exhaustion haunted every step. These were people who had lost everything—their homes, their livelihoods, their sense of safety. The city strained under the pressure, burdened by the influx of refugees and the looming terror of Nidhogg’s destruction.

And yet, King Nicolas moved through it all like calm in the center of a storm. His voice, though soft, carried the weight of authority as he addressed his people.

“We will get through this,” he assured a father whose children clung tightly to his legs. “We’ll find you shelter. You’ll be safe here.”

Star saw it in the king’s eyes: not just a promise of protection—but a promise of hope. He wasn’t just a ruler; he was a symbol. A last bastion of stability in a world on the brink of collapse.

His hands were calloused—not just from leadership, but from working alongside his people to ensure their survival.

They stopped at a small shelter on the city’s edge. Inside, soldiers distributed food while others arranged bedding for those who had nowhere else to go.

An elderly woman approached the king, her hands trembling as she clutched a small bundle of belongings, tears streaking her cheeks.

“Your Majesty,” she began, her voice wavering, “my home… it’s gone. I don’t know where to go. I don’t know what to do…”

Nicolas knelt beside her, meeting her gaze with steady warmth.

“You’re safe now,” he said gently. “We’ll take care of you. You’ll have a roof over your head, food to eat, and time to rest. You’re not alone.”

Star watched the tension ease from the woman’s shoulders, her expression softening.

It was a simple gesture—but one that meant the world. It was a gift from the king: unwavering dedication to his people, to every citizen of Valhalla, no matter their station.

As they continued on, the streets grew more crowded with people seeking refuge.

Children huddled together, wide-eyed with uncertainty, while their parents stood nearby, trying to remain strong for their families. Star’s heart tightened as she walked among them, knowing that many of these people had lost everything. Their homes, their belongings, their sense of safety—gone in an instant.

But Nicolas never faltered. Every few steps, he would pause to speak to someone, to offer reassurance, to promise protection.

He lifted spirits simply by being there—his presence like a shield against the fear gripping the city.

At one point, a man approached, carrying a small child in his arms. His face was gaunt, worn from fatigue.

“Your Majesty,” the man said, his voice cracking, “we came here hoping for shelter, but the city is so full. There’s nowhere left to go… What will we do?”

Nicolas placed a hand on the man’s shoulder, his voice filled with empathy.

“I know it’s hard,” he said. “But we won’t turn you away. We’ll find space for everyone. You’ll have a place to rest. I promise.”

The words were simple—but sincere. And that sincerity was enough to ease the man’s fears. He nodded in gratitude and moved toward the shelter, the child in his arms now calmer, comforted by the king’s words.

As they continued, Star saw the full weight of the king’s responsibility.

He wasn’t just organizing the city’s defenses—he was holding his people together. Ensuring they felt safe, even when their world had fallen apart. Every person they passed was greeted by the king with genuine care, as if he knew each of them by name.

“Did you see that?” Friedrich whispered as he walked beside Star. “The way he carries their burdens. It’s more than just protection. It’s about reminding them they matter. He makes them feel seen.”

Star nodded. “He’s not just a king. He’s their hope.”

They passed through the market, where merchants were still trying to sell their wares, but now, there were more emergency tents, more blankets laid on the ground as people searched for a place to rest. Star saw mothers comforting their children, and fathers standing in silent despair, unsure of what the future held.

“Your Majesty,” one of the commanders approached, his face carved with concern. “The northern gate—we’ve received word of an incoming attack. We’ve fortified it as best we can, but we need reinforcements.”

Nicolas nodded, his expression unwavering. “Ready the soldiers. I’ll be there shortly.”

Turning back to Star, he gave her a small, firm smile. “You and your friends are not alone in this fight. Valhalla will stand strong.”

And yet, as they neared the northern gate, Star sensed it...
the hope in the King’s eyes carried a shadow she had not seen before.

The war for Valhalla has ended.
The hero has been named.
Peace has finally returned to Atlantia.

Or so it seems.

In the aftermath of Nidhogg’s defeat, Star Rosalind and her companions are summoned once more—this time not to face a beast of legend, but an ancient tower long avoided by history itself. The Tower of a Thousand Mirrors stands at the edge of Valhalla, a relic of forgotten magic where reflections deceive, truths fracture, and the mind becomes the battlefield.

As the party ventures inside, they are forced to confront distorted memories, false selves, and echoes of a past that refuses to stay buried. Victory offers no protection here. Strength alone is not enough.

This arc marks the end of Valhalla’s chapter and the beginning of something far more dangerous.

Because some threats do not announce themselves with war.
They wait.
They reflect.
And they watch.
