For a heartbeat, the battlefield held its breath.
No roar. No clash. Only the whisper of fear and steel.
Then the Abyss answered.
The creatures surged forward—a wave of chaos and destruction. The first clash was deafening: steel met flesh, screams of pain and defiance tore through the air. Star’s blade arced through the mist, slicing cleanly through a shadowy beast that lunged at her. It shrieked, a high-pitched, otherworldly cry, before melting into a pool of black ichor.
Siegfried’s shield slammed into another monster, staggering it. He moved with calm precision, his sword flashing as he delivered a clean, decisive blow.
True to form, Friedrich hurled himself into the thick of the battle. His greatsword swept wide in a powerful arc, cleaving through Abyssals with savage force. “Come on, you ugly bastards!” he bellowed, grinning in the middle of the chaos.
Klara remained at a distance, her catalyst glowing brighter with each incantation. Lightning lanced from her fingertips, striking the beasts with pinpoint accuracy. She moved with graceful ease, utterly focused despite the growing madness of the battlefield.
Yet for every creature they struck down, another rose to take its place. The soldiers fought valiantly, but the strain was beginning to show.
The northern gate shuddered under the assault, its ancient stone walls trembling as the Abyssals battered it with relentless force. Star, Siegfried, Friedrich, and Klara arrived just as a towering monster—an enormous, grotesque fusion of shadow and sinew—smashed through the barricades, scattering soldiers like leaves in a storm.
Star's sword gleamed with radiant light as she charged forward—a beacon amidst the chaos. She slashed at the nearest monster, her blade cutting through its torn flesh. Her Light element flared as it struck the creature’s body, burning it with a burst of holy light. The Abyssal monster shrieked as its form disintegrated, leaving nothing but ash behind.
“Cover me!” she shouted, leaping toward a group of creatures climbing the wall.
“On it!” Friedrich replied, drawing his greatsword, flames licking along the blade. With a roar, he slammed his weapon into the ground, sending a fiery shockwave outward. The flames met the corrupted sludge left behind by one of the creatures. The sludge hissed and bubbled before igniting in a chain reaction, incinerating several smaller Abyssal monsters in a fiery hell.
“Friedrich, watch your footing!” Siegfried called out, his voice steady even amidst the chaos. He raised his shield as a shadow beast lunged at him. Its claws screeched against the enchanted metal, and Siegfried countered with a precise slash of his sword. Water spiraled around the blade as he struck, freezing the creature in place. He shoved it back, and the frozen monster shattered against the wall like brittle glass.
Behind them, Klara raised her catalyst and focused her Storm element. She conjured a tempest above the battlefield, lightning bolts crashing down into the fray. One bolt struck a puddle left by Siegfried’s earlier attack, electrifying it and sending a jolt through the feet of several nearby monsters. They spasmed and collapsed, smoke rising from their scorched bodies.
“Nice combo!” Klara shouted with a grin, already preparing another spell.
Siegfried nodded, his resolve unwavering. “Keep it up. More are coming.”
Indeed, more Abyssal monsters poured through the broken barricades. One particularly massive beast—its body covered in spikes and its jaws dripping venom—charged toward the group.
“I’ve got this one!” Friedrich yelled, rushing at the creature. His greatsword blazed with fire as he swung it in a wide arc, the heat so intense it made the air shimmer. The beast recoiled, but its venom splashed onto Friedrich’s armor, corroding the metal with a sinister hiss.
“Friedrich!” Star cried out, her voice tinged with concern.
“I’m fine!” he shot back, though his movements had grown slower. The venom seemed to sap his strength.
Star narrowed her eyes. She dashed forward, slashing the beast’s side to draw its attention away from Friedrich. Her sword, infused with light, cut deep, and a pulse of radiance burst from the wound, temporarily blinding the creature.
“Now, Siegfried!” she called.
Siegfried was already in motion. He swept in from the side, his sword wrapped in a whirl of water. He slashed at the beast’s leg, and the water froze on contact, paralyzing it.
“Friedrich, finish it!” Siegfried commanded.
Grimacing, Friedrich forced himself upright. He raised his blazing greatsword high, the flames roaring as if in answer to his will. With a mighty swing, he brought the weapon down on the frozen beast, shattering it in a spectacular explosion of fire and ice.
The group barely had time to catch their breath before another wave of monsters surged forward.
“More of them?” Klara muttered, her hands glowing with storm energy. “They just don’t stop, do they?”
“Good,” Friedrich said with a reckless grin, wiping the sweat from his brow. “I’m not done yet.”
Star smiled, even in the midst of the madness. “Let’s show them what we’ve got.”
The battle raged on, elemental energy clashing against the darkness of the Abyss in a chaotic symphony. Each member of the group fought with unwavering resolve, their synergy turning the tide against the monstrous horde. Together, they were a force to be reckoned with—light against the encroaching shadows.
But even as they held the line, the fog thickened
and something far worse stirred within it.
