So I read magnolias are flowers often given from one partner to another to say "you are worthy of a beautiful magnolia" - they represent puritiy and dignity. My guess is that Life's gift was incredibly important to Death - it conveyed that Life (still?) likes and respects him. Life is the center of his existence, the only lively thing in an otherwise cold and dead environment.
