The cavern trembled violently as Nidhogg’s thunderous roar echoed through its vast, jagged chambers. With a surge of power, the ancient dragon unfurled its colossal wings—each obsidian scale laced with molten veins of corrupted fire. Rising from the fractured ground, Nidhogg ascended into the air, its immense form casting an oppressive shadow over Star and her companions.
“He’s taking to the skies!” Friedrich shouted, gripping his blazing greatsword as his eyes tracked the beast.
Klara’s gaze swept across the battlefield—the ground cracked and bleeding with sinister energy. “Stay alert! The terrain is shifting—it's not safe to stand still!”
As if answering her words, the earth convulsed and erupted in jagged geysers of black flame. Each eruption tore through the cavern floor, forcing the group to dodge and weave through the chaos of exploding darkness.
Star rolled clear of a sudden blast, the searing heat licking at her cloak. She sprang to her feet, the Sword of Light igniting in her grasp like a sunburst. “We can’t let him control the field! Klara—keep us mobile! Siegfried, Friedrich—prepare to strike!”
Above, Nidhogg let out a guttural growl before diving downward—a streak of smoke and fire descending like a comet. The impact shook the cavern, sending out a tremor as his tail lashed violently, carving a deep rift into the already-broken terrain.
Siegfried raised his shield just in time, blocking the tail's strike with a grunt. “He’s stronger than before!” he warned. “We need to find an opening!”
Klara nodded, her hands glowing as she summoned a stabilizing gust. “I’ll distract him from above! Star—focus your attacks when he’s grounded!”
Star dashed forward, her blade gleaming as she dove into the fray. She dodged another tail swipe, her sword slashing at the dragon’s hind leg. Sparks erupted as the Light-forged blade tore through cracked scales, drawing a furious bellow from the beast.
Suddenly, Nidhogg reeled back, its chest pulsating with dark energy. A deep, resonating hum filled the air, and for a breathless moment, the entire battlefield held its breath.
“Fall back!” Astrid shouted from the edge of the field.
The warning came just in time.
With a roar that shook the cavern’s ceiling, Nidhogg unleashed a Corrosive Breath—not just fire, but writhing tendrils of shadow that lashed out in every direction. The group scattered as the shadows snaked toward them, nearly grazing Klara as she soared upward on a cushion of air.
“He’s trying to box us in!” Klara yelled. “Keep moving!”
From above, Nidhogg roared again, the air thickening with the weight of his corrupt power. The very ground pulsed with decay—and then, rising from the earth, came twisted phantoms: ghostly forms of fallen warriors, their distorted faces drawn toward the dragon like moths to flame.
“He’s using Soul Drain!” Klara cried out in alarm.
Star’s heart clenched as she watched the spirits—echoes of lost lives—sucked into Nidhogg’s core, vanishing in streams of light that sealed his wounds. The cracks in his scales, once split and bleeding, now shimmered with renewed strength.
“We can’t let him keep healing!” Star shouted. “Break his shield—NOW!”
Friedrich surged forward, flames igniting around his greatsword. “Let’s end this!” he roared, cleaving through the phantoms in a sweeping arc of fire. Siegfried followed close behind, his Dew-infused shield glowing as he bashed away the lingering spirits.
Klara sent a surge of wind scattering the spectral figures, her catalyst shining like a beacon. “He’s buying time to recover! We have to stop him now!”
Just as the last of the ghosts faded, Nidhogg ascended once more, swirling overhead like a storm. His wings carved fiery trails through the air as he spun, then dove down again—unleashing another Hawar Eruption. The blast tore apart the ground, forcing the group to scatter once more.
Star gritted her teeth as she sprinted through the hellscape. Her blade cut through another creeping shadow as her mind raced. “We need to bring him down—force him to land!”
Hovering above the battlefield, Klara’s eyes burned with determination. “If we can pin him to the ground, we’ll have a better shot! Star—draw his attention! I’ll try something!”
As Star and the others bombarded Nidhogg from below, Klara raised both hands high, channeling the full force of her storm-wielding will. She summoned a focused burst of wind, a vortex that struck Nidhogg’s wing with incredible force.
The dragon staggered mid-flight.
“NOW!” Klara screamed. “He’s destabilized!”
The moment of opportunity blazed like a beacon. Star leapt skyward, propelled by pure momentum and resolve. Her blade, bathed in radiant light, cleaved downward in a flash of brilliance, striking Nidhogg’s shoulder with explosive force.
The dragon roared in agony as it crashed to the ground, the tremor rocking the battlefield.
“We got him!” Siegfried shouted. “Push forward!”
The party closed in, striking with synchronized precision. Friedrich’s fire scorched Nidhogg’s underbelly, while Siegfried’s shield hammered the beast’s skull, forcing its head to recoil. Klara’s relentless wind swept the battlefield clear, holding back the encroaching corruption.
But just as victory seemed near, Nidhogg's body pulsed—its dark core swirling with unstable energy. The earth itself seemed to convulse beneath their feet, the air rippling with unbearable heat and spatial distortion.
Star’s breath came heavy as she steadied herself. “This isn’t over,” she whispered, her voice resolute even through exhaustion.
Nidhogg rose once more, wings twitching, eyes ablaze with burning hatred. The battle was far from finished—but Star and her allies stood their ground, unwavering in the face of the beast known as…
The Harbinger of Ragnarok.
