I had never been to a pet shop because Pa said they stink.
He has a sensitive nose—just like Sis.
Instead, I'd sit at my aunt's house and wait for the neighborhood stray cats to invite themselves in.
One day, a cat strolled into my aunt's house and gracefully sprawled out on the floor.
I walked closer and stared at it.
The cat didn't move away, so I kept staring.
Cat's thoughts: What is this birdbrain human doing? Doesn't she have anything better to do than stare at me? I know I'm gorgeous, but this is getting weird. I want to move, but this spot is perfect for sunbathing…
The cat turned its head and our eyes met.
For some reason, the cat flinched.
Cat's thoughts: This human is kinda scary. I better move away while I still can…
Before it could escape, I made some random gibberish sounds.
Me: @£%#&@>×^&*
The cat leaped up in shock and bolted.
Cat's thoughts: What nonsense is this human spewing?! Who cares?! Just run!
For the next few days, the cat didn't come back.I was sad.
Then I remembered—
Me (thinking back): Hey, what's your name? My name is Sae. My family calls me BBQ Bun, though. Let's be friends!
I gasped.
Me (horrified): Is it because it doesn't like BBQ buns?! Is that why it left?!
I sank into despair.
