Kalesha Empire: part one

Kalesha Empire: part one

Nov 13, 2025

The Kalesha Empire is where the story of Sequoia starts.
Has been an empire for 700 years and a kingdom for 800 years. Not much is known about when it was a kingdom as very few surviving records have remained.
Since it has been an empire there have been six dynasties, however there were also three usurpers
Dynasties:
first dynasty (before heavily nature based and very religious) Kalesha dynasty. Rose to become an empire after going to war and conquering thirty percent of the mainland. fell due to internal power struggles between the children of the emperor and empress- before the power that the current imperial family poses. rained for sixty years
Second Lyrica dynasty (still religious). Started to conquer other continents. Fell due to lack of support from the temples that had significant influence in politics, also due to the betrayal from the main temple who assassinated the ruler of that time who then usurped the throne. Ruled for thirty years
Usurper Voyul (believing in anything other than Kalatashi became illegal and punishable by death.) Got killed by the niece of the last ruler of the Lyrica dynasty during a civil war caused by the unrest between the people and the temple due to most of the money from the economy going to the temple and the temple soldiers. Temples were destroyed and religious texts burnt. Ruled for twenty years
Third Falima dynasty (religion is not as influential and lots of people lost faith. When the power of the current imperial family appeared.) Conquered islands to the east. Eventually fell due to corruption in the family and the lack of financial aid to the commoners which resulted in the cousin of the ruler killing the children and ruler and taking the throne for themself. Ruled for 315 years.
Usurper Eurala. Cousin to the last ruler of the Falima dynasty. Banished those who would be the direct descendants of the Falima dynasty and the ones most likely to gain the power of the imperial family. Focused more on the commoners than the nobility and the army. Resulted in outside forces conquering the peninsula which resulted in them taking over the empire. Ruled for fifteen years
Usurper Torlag. The emperor of the Fayran Empire (no longer exists) came to power after going to war against Eurala and ended up taking over. Fell When the first person of the Telma dynasty waged war against him and reclaimed the throne, resulting in the collapse of the Fayran empire. Ruled for fifty years.
The Fourth Telma dynasty (No religious people, starting to be more nature based society) took over the majority of the Fayran empire. Fell due to the last ruler of the dynasty resigning their power and the power selecting their aunty, creating a new dynasty. Ruled for 30 years
Fifth Birch Dynasty (mostly nature based) No conquering land Economy grew significantly, as well as trade and when a lot of policies and laws regarding things like magic were created, including when the academy was built. Fell due to the last ruler dying without any heirs to take their place. Lasted 100 years.
Sixth Oak dynasty (Full nature based) Current ruling dynasty, no conquering. Current ruling time 80 years
The regions are self governed but are led by the inner circle of the imperial family who reports to the empress.
The economy is based on agriculture, trade using herbs and medicinal trade, crafting materials (wood etc), cultural exchange as well as the profits made by the inventors guild.
The central power of the Kelsha Empire is a peninsula and the border is a forest. The forest is very dense and difficult to navigate through so people will either need a map that was specially made to help navigate through the forest or a person who lives near or in the forest that has been through it will need to guide them through.
The peninsula consists of fields and forests.
General appearance for people on the peninsula
Height: around 5 foot 5
Those who do a lot of farming etc tend to have a more lean body type. People in the colonised areas of the empire will have different body shapes depending on the type of land they live on
People living on the plains will have more tanned skins compared to those who live closer or in the forest borders
Moderate heat tolerance, people who live on the peninsula are better suited for more humid climates
Likely to have brown/black/green/hazel eyes while their hair would be brown/black
They are likely to be stronger and have more endurance and stamina
They have strong immune systems
Their hands and feet are likely to be calloused
Have an upright and practical stance
Before the empire became an empire it was a kingdom that was extremely religious and worshipped both Kalatashi and Delgrah. The empire is named after Kalatashi as they believed it was where Kalatashi was resting.
Although the people used to be incredibly religious, they no longer believe in any gods due to people gradually believing in them less and less, also due to a time period where, when it was a kingdom, they were at war, a lot of religious and historical texts were destroyed.
In present times the people worship nature and everything is based around nature.
Due to the nature based society, people name their children after flowers, no matter the gender. For their middle names they will often use colours if different colours of the flower changes the meaning. (They may name their child Rose Pink if they want their child to be admired, show gratitude to people and have people show their gratitude to the child.)
A child is named when they reach six months old. Their parents will take them to the council building, or equivalent if in a village and register the child’s name, the parents name, the date, month and year the baby was born and where the baby was born.
In the case of orphans, if in an orphanage the director will register a name for the child and estimate their age which will then be corrected when the child reaches twelve years old, if needed. If they don’t know the child’s biological parents they will register the orphanage rather than the parents name, but if they know the parent(s) they will register their names but note that the baby has been left at the orphanage.
People started to name their children after flowers during the Telma dynasty.
Last names are also based on flowers. However, last names were only introduced in the Birch dynasty and were based on the name of the Oldest person alive in the family. (If the oldest person in the family was the father whose name was Oleander, the families last name would be Oleander)
They are very hierarchical and have a strict noble structure. However, they also still value ability, magic and skill compared to how old a noble family's lineage is. (Someone of lower nobility can be married to someone of higher nobility, without being opposed if they have good control and skill over their personal and general magic and if they have proved it. However, this is more likely to happen to younger nobility, whereas older members of the nobility are more likely to oppose marriage between people of such different statuses, no matter the magic ability or skills.
Older nobility are more conservative and strict when it comes to ranks, they are less likely to hire commoners and if they do they are more likely to mistreat them. However, there are also those who would not pay attention to them.
People will often discriminate against people with strong personal magic as the stronger the magic the less frequent they can use it, hence why weaker magic is favoured.
Because of the indiscrimination against people who have strong magic, people with strong magic would often rather lose their personal magic as it is seen as more preferable than having so much.
General magic is taught depending on where they live, their social status etc, but are all taught at the age of five as people start to sense magic at this age.
Children from upper class nobility will be taught by tutors who follow a standard way of teaching: having the children study everything about magic and have them interact with the element (water=keeping their hands under water for long periods of time so they can feel how the water moves, earth=have the children stand on mud/dirt and general earth so they can feel what it’s like and what else is in the earth, fire=They watch their tutor light use fire as well as watching a fire to see how fire starts and the different uses fire has, air=they go outside to feel the wind and how it affects, not only for themself, but also how it affects everything and everyone else
Lower class noble children and commoners have their own traditions on how to teach the children. In some small villages everyone will help teach the children how to use magic.
At the age of twelve (the age when people get their personal magic) they get separated from their families and sent to an academy for one year. Everything is provided for them, from food to areas for them to learn to control and properly use their personal magic as well as everything they need to learn about their magic. They also get taught essential things such as how to read and write.
The academy is located near the border on the peninsula, however there are also academies set up in the feudal states but either way all the academies are located near the border.
Going to the academy is free for everyone, although experiences will differ depending on their social classes. For example a child of nobility will have nicer dorm rooms with higher quality beds and their own bathrooms and better quality food. They will also have more free time due to learning most of what is taught prior to arriving at the academy. They would also be given more opportunities to practise magic outside of the academy, provided that they are accompanied by an instructor. The materials provided to them, such as weapons, books etc, are also higher quality.
Once the year is over the academy holds a festival where parents, friends, potential employers and even the general public will be able to attend. Most students will take the opportunity to organise a show to demonstrate their personal magic whereas others may run stalls, such as food stalls. Others may perform a play or have games that attendees can play.
During the festival some may be scouted by nobles, companies, organisations or other potential employers who can make use of their personal magic and abilities.
After graduation, if they got scouted at the festival they may end up taking that opportunity. However, others may decide to go back to their hometown and work for their family business or support their family. They may also start their own business or travel. Others may take their studies further to specialise in a specific area (not necessarily magic based, such as teaching) and others may join a guild.
People will often be influenced into a job depending on their personal magic and may also be scouted out by different employers, and even nobility, in some cases. For example, someone who has some kind of foresight might be recruited by a member of the royal family or a member of higher nobility if they feel that the foresight could be of use.
The royal family has extremely powerful magic. However, the rule where the stronger the magic the less you can use it does not apply to them. This is because the magic is sentient to an extent.
The magic the royal family, more specifically the emperor/empress is able to wield is able to see the true intent behind behind what a person wants and also being able to see what the results of important decisions that affect the whole empire will have (for example the results of what happens if they go to war etc)
The power is sentient in the sense that it can choose who the next wielder is based on interactions that the former user had with potential users. It also chooses the person they think would be the best to rule the empire and could use the power in the most beneficial way. However, if there is only one direct descendant of the former wielder than the magic will pass onto that person even if they have little to no similarities to the previous wielder or if they do not have the qualities to be a good leader. If there are no direct descendants of the previous wielder the magic will be passed onto the next closest relative, such as a niece or nephew. Due to this, the next emperor/empress will be decided based on which member of the imperial family gains power.
As a result of the power getting passed on even if the candidate in question has no qualifications or skills, there are often deadly succession wars that result in many deaths. During these wars different factions are formed, supporting different candidates.
Before anyone is chosen to possess the magic, a crown prince(ess) is chosen based on who is believed to be the most likely to inherit the power. They are the ones who are most at risk of assassination attempts.
For royalty, no one gains personal magic until the emperor/empress dies as the power moves onto someone else. This means the candidates could be in their twenties, if not older, until they receive their own personal magic.
There has been
Strong magic is discriminated against as it is unable to be used frequently so people with weak personal magic is favoured
general magic is viewed more as a convenience and is not cared too much about. People don’t particularly care if someone loses their general magic. However, in some communities, especially smaller communities where people teach the children together, may feel betrayed or feel they have been insulted a person whose general magic has been lost for many different reasons such as they may feel that they didn’t like the way they were taught or because they weren’t good enough to teach the person. As a result it often leads to them kicking the person out of the community.
When primal magic existed two primal magic users went into battle and as a result the area got destroyed. This created the area that soon came to be known as the Darthey kingdom. The battle resulted in everything either dying or migrating. From this, people realised that overusing magic is dangerous which resulted in them replanting trees and fruit seeds. However, it wasn’t until around the Thelma dynasty where they started to take nature more seriously and became more integrated with nature.

I forgot to post this on Wednesday and yes I know that I can schedule when to post, I just forget about it. Bitt anyway this chapter is to do with the Kalesha Empire, there is still some more information about this Empire that I need to post about but seems like I'll have to put it in multiple parts, I'll probably have to add multiple chapters for the other countries as well. Anyway, hope this made sense, as per usual if something is unclear then comment and let me know and I'll correct it in the chapter and reply to make it clearer and please check out my main series 'Sequoia'.
