Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Nov 16, 2025

The streets outside Verden Arcane Press grew quiet as night settled over Althoria. Fires burned inside lantern posts and the wind carried the faint sound of chimes from distant temples. Elias gathered the first members of the True Ink Division in the basement strategy room. The room was once used for storing unused printing plates but Elias had repurposed it. Maps of the city covered the walls. Ink markers of different colors showed routes smugglers used to move black market books. Elias pointed to a red circle near the western bridge. That was where Theo heard the suspicious conversation earlier. Elias believed the men planned to meet again tonight. The goal was simple. Follow them and learn where stolen pages were taken.

Kaiden equipped himself with light armor and a dull metal staff. He preferred non magical weapons to avoid attracting attention. Mira carried a satchel filled with scribing tools and a small ward stone. Elias wore a plain cloak with his hood down. He did not want to be recognized. He reminded his team that this was an information mission not a confrontation. They were to observe quietly and return safely. Both nodded.

They exited through the rear entrance and took narrow alleys toward the western bridge. The night air was cool and carried a faint hint of smoke from chimney fires. They walked without speaking. Kaiden signaled twice to change direction to avoid a patrol. Althoria was peaceful but the city guards were strict about late night movements because of recent black market crimes. Mira whispered that she could sense a disturbance ahead. Elias trusted her instincts. She was a skilled editor but also trained in subtle detection magic often used to identify forged documents. They stopped behind a stack of crates near the bridge.

Two men stood under the archway speaking in low tones. Both wore travel cloaks and carried satchels too small for normal goods but perfect for stolen documents. Elias listened closely. One said the buyer demanded the Emberjaw sketches by morning. The other complained that security had increased at the publishing house. They did not realize Elias himself listened from less than ten steps away. The first man pulled a folded parchment from his satchel. The second checked it with a small crystal and nodded. Elias recognized the parchment. Kaiden’s handwriting. His heart tightened. These were the thieves.

Elias signaled Mira to activate the ward stone. She pressed it and the stone emitted a thin pulse of blue light barely visible. It marked the thieves with a tracking signature. The signature did not reveal itself until certain spells were used but it allowed the True Ink Division to follow them from a distance. The two men left the bridge and walked deeper into the western district. Elias Kaiden and Mira followed quietly keeping a safe distance. They passed closed fruit stands empty stables and shuttered taverns. The air carried the smell of wet soil. The thieves walked faster as if nervous.

They finally stopped at an old warehouse near the river. The building looked abandoned. Windows were boarded. The door sagged on one hinge. But faint light flickered inside. Elias realized they had found a black market transfer point. Mira whispered that the ward stone detected a larger concentration of stolen documents. Kaiden asked if they should enter. Elias shook his head. They needed more information. They circled around the warehouse and found a small window gap near the roof. Elias lifted Mira and she looked inside. Her eyes widened. She whispered that she saw stacks of copied books crates of forged maps and several scrolls containing military data. This was more than a simple storage site. It was a major distribution hub.

While they observed the warehouse door opened and a tall man in a dark coat stepped out. He wore gloves and a mask that covered the lower half of his face. On his coat was a small metal emblem shaped like a broken quill. Elias felt the air grow colder. The emblem was the mark of the Ghost Typesetter’s inner circle. This was no ordinary agent. This was someone high ranking. The man spoke to the thieves. His voice was clear but controlled. He said the Ghost Typesetter wanted the Emberjaw data urgently. He said the serpent migration patterns were part of a larger secret. Kaiden leaned forward. His face tightened. Elias asked Mira to memorize everything. She nodded and began writing quickly in her scribing pad.

The masked man continued speaking. He said a larger plan was unfolding and the Emberjaw information needed to be inserted into a false guide to mislead adventurers away from a certain region. Elias felt his stomach drop. They were manipulating wildlife data to control movement across the continent. This was not only about killing adventurers. This was about redirecting them away from something. A ruin or a secret location. Something the Ghost Typesetter wanted for himself.

Kaiden stepped forward but Elias stopped him. The urge to act was strong but the goal tonight was to gather knowledge not fight. If they attacked now they might lose the chance to learn the bigger purpose behind the theft. Kaiden nodded reluctantly. The masked man took the parchment from the thieves and returned inside the warehouse. Elias knew they had to retrieve that document soon but not now. They needed a complete plan.

They retreated into the alley and returned to Verden Arcane Press. The staff were surprised to see them return so early. Elias gathered everyone in the meeting room and explained what they learned. Mira placed her scribing pad on the table. She had recorded every word the masked man said. Elias read the notes carefully. A pattern emerged. The manipulated migration routes forced adventurers to travel south. South toward an ancient region filled with ruins from the Old Kingdom. Elias realized the black market was trying to take control of the ruins before anyone else. If they controlled the knowledge of those ruins they controlled the future.

Kaiden clenched his fists. He said they had to act fast. Mira agreed. Elias placed both hands on the table and spoke calmly. The True Ink Division would prepare a counter operation. They would infiltrate the warehouse retrieve the stolen Emberjaw pages and expose the black market plan. But first they needed allies. Reliable ones.

Elias turned to Kaiden and Mira and said the next step would not be easy. They would be entering a world where lies were weapons and knowledge was currency. But they were ready. They had to be ready. Because the battle ahead would decide not only the accuracy of books but the fate of truth itself.

As the night ended Elias walked alone to the balcony once more. The sky was pale with the first trace of morning. He knew the path forward was dangerous but necessary. Knowledge was worth fighting for. And he would fight until every false word burned away.
