Lord of Arcane Publishing

Chapter 1

Chapter 1

Nov 16, 2025

Elias Verden walked through the main hall of Verden Arcane Press before sunrise. The lamps cast warm lines of light across stacks of parchment and ink jars. His editors were still asleep in their dorm rooms but the printing golems hummed softly as they rested in their stone cradles. The entire building felt like a giant library heart waiting to wake. Elias loved this quiet hour. It was the only time he could think without the noise of requests complaints or threats that came from customers and officials every day.

He opened the shutters to let in the first gray light of morning. The city of Althoria stretched out below. Adventurers moved toward the guild plaza wearing travel coats and carrying heavy packs. Merchants pushed carts filled with dried meat rope and simple magic charms. The world outside depended on information. One wrong map line or one false monster weakness could kill people before noon. That thought followed Elias every time he looked out his window. Knowledge kept people alive and he was the one who chose which knowledge reached the world and how accurate it was.

He walked toward the main printing room. A young editor named Mira was already awake checking stacks of monster sketches. She stood from her desk and bowed slightly. Elias told her she did not need to greet him so formally every morning. She said habit was hard to break especially in a place where truth had to be treated like gold. He smiled at that and asked what she was working on. Mira explained that a group of field researchers returned with new notes on a creature called the Emberjaw Serpent. They had lost one member of their team. The notes said the death came from wrong information in an old black market copy of the Monster Guide.

Elias felt a cold weight settle in his chest. Another death caused by fake books. Another false weakness printed by criminals. He asked Mira to bring him the black market copy. She returned with a thin book whose ink carried the faint smell of rotten wood. He opened it and saw the lies. The book said the serpent feared frost spells but in truth frost only made the creature faster. Someone had altered the data to trap inexperienced adventurers. The pages were neat but the intent was cruel. Elias burned the copy with a small flick of his arcane seal and swore again that he would stop the black market from spreading false knowledge.

When he walked back to his office he saw a sealed letter waiting on his desk. The wax seal showed the crest of the Kingdom Information Council. He broke it open and read. The council demanded revisions to his Western Frontier Map. They wanted him to erase a canyon and move a mountain pass two miles east. The letter claimed the adjustments were needed for national security. Elias understood what they really wanted. They planned to hide troop placements and force all travelers through a controlled route. They wanted the map to become a political weapon.

He sat down and closed his eyes. He did not want to lie in his books. He did not want his maps to become tools of manipulation. But refusing the council could lead to fines or a ban on distribution. His publishing house might lose access to guild markets. It could even be shut down. The moment knowledge turned into propaganda the world would suffer. Elias took a deep breath and folded the letter. He did not decide yet. He needed to think before giving them an answer.

He left his office and walked to the rooftop garden a quiet space where he often planned his next steps. He looked at the horizon and remembered why he founded Verden Arcane Press. He wanted a world where people did not die because someone sold them lies. He wanted a world where books gave people real power not false hope. The sun rose slowly washing the city in gold. Elias promised himself he would find a path that protected his company his employees and the truth. It would not be easy. Truth never was.

When he returned downstairs he found an unexpected guest waiting in the hall. A messenger in a gray cloak stood near the entrance holding a sealed black envelope. The messenger said nothing only bowed and offered the envelope to Elias before disappearing into the morning streets. Elias felt the weight of danger in the envelope before he even opened it. The seal was marked with a symbol known only in rumors a broken quill crossed with a ghostly hand. He opened it carefully. Inside was a simple card with a short message written in thin silver ink.

Elias closed the envelope and looked toward the printing room where his editors worked. He felt a storm growing. The black market was not only selling lies. They were watching him. They wanted him afraid. They wanted control of every word he printed. Elias straightened his back. This would not be the year the truth fell. This would be the year he fought back.
