Chapter 9

Chapter 9

Nov 16, 2025

The wind picked up as Elias Mira and Kaiden entered the rocky stretch that marked the start of the Whispering Pass. The mountains rose like jagged teeth on both sides casting long shadows across the trail. The ground shifted from soft dirt to uneven stone and every step echoed faintly as if the land itself whispered back. Mira said the pass was known for strange acoustics. Travelers often heard their own voices returning distorted. Kaiden tightened his grip on his staff. Elias led them forward with steady steps.

The glowing ink trace on the ground remained faint but visible. The stolen contract scroll had been carried this way. Elias studied each marker carefully remembering how the scroll radiated a unique magical signature bound to Verden Arcane Press. Whoever stole it must have moved quickly but not carefully enough to hide the traces. That meant they were in a rush. Or overconfident. Both possibilities worried Elias.

As they moved deeper into the pass the wind carried strange echoes. Some sounded like distant footsteps. Others like scattered voices. Mira paused several times to check if the echoes were real or illusions. She whispered that sound illusions were common in this region especially near ancient ruins. Kaiden muttered that illusion or not he did not trust the echoes. Elias agreed. They kept close together.

They reached a ridge overlooking a narrow drop. The path wound down in a steep curve. At the bottom they saw broken crates scattered across the ground. Elias signaled caution and descended with Mira and Kaiden. The crates were marked with a symbol of a known merchant company from Althoria. But these crates were empty and torn apart. Kaiden crouched beside one then shook his head. He said the destruction was recent. Mira examined the splintered wood and found scorch marks. She said it looked like fire magic but unstable. Not the work of an experienced mage.

Elias suspected the crates had been part of a decoy shipment. The thieves might have used merchant crates to disguise their movement then destroyed them to hide evidence. But something felt wrong. Too careless. Too loud. The black market usually worked with precision. Elias looked toward the pass ahead. Faint footprints led south. They followed the trail.

The pass narrowed. Walls of stone rose so high that only a thin ribbon of sky remained visible. Mira activated the ward stone lightly. It pulsed once revealing faint magical residue. Elias recognized the signature. It matched Marek Hollow. He felt his chest tighten. Marek was close. Too close.

Kaiden stopped abruptly. Ahead the footprints split. One trail moved toward a dark tunnel carved into the mountain wall. The other continued straight toward a rocky slope. Mira examined the ground. She said the tunnel path felt wrong. The magical residue near it was distorted. As if someone tried to mask their presence. Elias studied the tunnel entrance. Even the air around it felt strange like a faint pressure on his ears. He decided they should avoid the tunnel for now. They followed the slope path.

The wind grew stronger. Dust scattered across the stones. As they moved higher they saw a small flag caught in a thorn bush. The cloth bore the mark of the Unbound Scribes. A broken quill encircled by ink splashes. Elias pulled it free and frowned. Leaving a symbol behind was not like them. They operated quietly. Hidden. This was deliberate.

Mira said it could be a warning. Kaiden said it felt like bait. Elias agreed. But the scroll’s ink traces still led south. They continued carefully until they reached another clearing. At the center of the clearing lay a collapsed pack. Papers spilled across the ground. Some were blank. Some held fragments of copied maps. Elias recognized the style. These were prototypes for fake guides. The pack’s owner must have fled in a hurry.

Kaiden lifted a scrap and looked at the ink. He said the scribing den must have sent more documents ahead. Mira touched the ward stone and detected another pulse. She said the scroll was close. Very close. Elias scanned the area. He felt a faint tug of magic from the left side of the clearing. They followed it until they reached a cluster of boulders leaning together like a small cave entrance.

Inside they found boot prints. Broken twigs. A roped knot left behind. And at the far end of the cave a torn strip of parchment glowing faintly. Elias knelt and touched it. It belonged to the stolen scroll. They were gaining ground.

But a sudden sound echoed from above. A sharp howl followed by scraping rock. Kaiden reacted instantly raising his staff. Mira stepped back. Elias looked toward the ridge. A shadow moved across the stones. Then another. Silhouettes of long scaled bodies slithered between rocks. Emberjaw Serpents.

Kaiden whispered that they must have migrated early. Mira checked the old logs. The serpents gathered near volcanic ridges but their hunting patterns sometimes extended farther north when magical surges occurred. Elias realized the Unbound Scribes had likely triggered those surges by activating forbidden artifacts or spells. They created unnatural migration shifts to force adventurers away and cover their tracks.

The serpents descended. Their jaws glowed dim red like embers inside a forge. Elias motioned for silence. They moved back slowly. But one serpent raised its head and hissed. It sensed them.

Kaiden stepped forward ready to protect his team. Mira prepared a small ward barrier. Elias searched his coat for defensive spells but he carried only ward tokens. He whispered for Kaiden to strike the ground not the serpent. Kaiden understood. He slammed his staff into the stone. Dust shot upward. The serpent recoiled from the sudden movement.

Elias grabbed Mira’s arm and pulled her toward the exit. Kaiden followed. The serpents hissed again but did not pursue. Elias realized they were more territorial than aggressive in this region. That meant someone was intentionally guiding them elsewhere. Possibly toward the ruins.

When they escaped the cave they followed the scroll’s signature farther south until the rocks gave way to a dense forest. Tall trees swayed under heavy wind. The sky darkened. Elias looked toward the south horizon. Storm clouds gathered unnaturally. Mira said the magic here felt heavy. Old. The kind that lingered from ancient civilizations.

Elias told them they were close. The Old Kingdom boundary lay beyond the next ridge. The stolen scroll and whoever carried it was somewhere within that forest. The whisper of leaves carried faint echoes like distant voices chanting. Kaiden stepped ahead and said they needed to move before the serpents circled back.

They walked into the forest. Shadows wrapped around the trees. The path narrowed. Moss covered stones. The air thickened with ancient magic.

The chase continued
and truth moved deeper into forgotten land.
