Chapter 10

Chapter 10

Nov 16, 2025

The Old Kingdom forest greeted them with a chilling stillness. Branches arched high like rib bones of an ancient giant. Moss coated the ground in thick layers and faint silver runes glowed on scattered stones half buried under roots. Every breath carried a taste of old magic. Not wild but patient. Watching. Elias slowed his pace. He knew ruins like these held memories carved into the land. Some helpful. Some dangerous.

Mira held the ward stone tightly. It pulsed again showing the scroll’s signature somewhere ahead. Kaiden scanned the trees keeping his staff ready. He said the forest felt wrong. Too quiet even for a place untouched by settlers. Elias agreed. The forest was silent because it was listening.

They followed a narrow trail until they reached a fallen archway. Carvings across its surface depicted serpents intertwined with symbols of knowledge. Elias brushed away dirt and realized the symbols matched the ones in the old logs describing the Crown Chamber. He told Mira to take notes. Kaiden knelt and examined small footprints leading beyond the arch. They were fresh. Likely the courier or Marek Hollow himself.

The trail bent around a pond covered in thin mist. As they circled it Elias noticed faint ripples in the water though no wind reached the pond. Mira whispered that old magic slept beneath the surface. She warned them not to approach. Kaiden muttered that water spirits or ancient traps could easily hide there. They continued past the pond.

A short distance later they saw broken branches and disturbed soil. Someone had stopped here recently. Elias found a torn scrap of cloak buried under leaves. The fabric bore the same color as the cloaks worn by the canal couriers. They were close. Closer than expected.

Suddenly Mira froze. She said she felt something ahead. Not danger. Not magic. Something else. A presence. Elias asked her to describe it. She said it felt like pages turning in the distance. Kaiden frowned. Elias understood. In places where primordial theory lingered magic sometimes manifested as sensory illusions related to knowledge.

They moved forward carefully. The forest thinned into a clearing where ancient stone pillars stood like silent guardians. At the center lay a small campfire still smoldering. Papers scattered across the ground. A satchel overturned. Elias rushed forward and lifted a half burned page. It contained symbols matching the stolen scroll. Mira checked the ward stone. The signature was intense. Very near.

They moved behind a pillar and found a collapsed figure lying on the ground. A courier from the black market. His cloak torn. His breaths shallow. Kaiden checked for wounds. The man was alive but unconscious. Mira searched his satchel. It held nothing but empty containers and a broken scribing crystal.

Elias asked where the scroll was. Mira pointed to claw marks on the ground. Deep gouges. Something had dragged the courier several feet before fleeing. Tracks led into the deeper forest. Elias realized the scroll was gone. But not taken by a human. Whatever dragged the courier left serpent like markings. Long. Curved. Heavy.

Kaiden cursed under his breath. Elias felt sick. If an Emberjaw Serpent had taken the scroll its migration path would lead straight toward volcanic ridges near the Crown Chamber. The scroll was not only at risk. It was being carried into the heart of the black market’s target.

Before they followed the trail a soft whisper echoed through the trees. Not wind. A voice. Elias turned toward the sound. A figure emerged from behind a pillar. A woman in a faded scholar’s robe. Her hair white as parchment. Her eyes glowing faint gold. But she did not stand normally. Her outline shimmered faintly like a mirage.

Mira gasped. Kaiden raised his staff. Elias recognized what she was. A memory echo. A magical imprint of someone who once lived here.

The echo spoke. Her voice calm and distant. She said she had guarded knowledge in the Crown Chamber long before the kingdoms formed. She said she sensed intruders who carried hunger instead of respect. She said the scroll contained claims of ownership over the ruins and such claims were meaningless here. Knowledge in the Crown Chamber did not belong to kingdoms or publishers or markets. It belonged to the world.

Elias stepped forward and bowed respectfully. He said they sought truth not control. He explained that the black market wished to twist knowledge into chaos and that the stolen scroll must be recovered to prevent disaster. The echo studied him with empty glowing eyes. She said she believed his intentions. She said the scroll had not been destroyed yet. It was carried by a serpent drawn to residual magic within the parchment. She said the serpent followed an ancient migration path leading to the Vault of Ember Roots a cavern near the Crown Chamber.

Elias asked how they could reach it. The echo raised her hand and a faint shimmering path appeared through the trees. A hidden route concealed from those who intended harm. She said they must follow the path before nightfall. After sunset the forest shifted. Paths changed. Memories awakened. And those without permission would be trapped until dawn.

Kaiden nodded firmly. Mira whispered her thanks. Elias looked at the echo and asked why she helped strangers. The echo replied that the world needed guardians of truth more than ever. She faded slowly until only the shimmering path remained.

They headed down the path. Trees parted softly as if honoring the echo’s guidance. The deeper they moved the heavier the air became. Ancient magic gathered around them thick like fog. Elias held his breath. They were walking toward the Vault of Ember Roots and somewhere inside that cavern the stolen scroll waited. Along with whoever else sought its power.

Kaiden looked ahead with determination. Mira held the ward stone close. Elias stepped forward into the unknown.

The forest that remembered the world’s oldest truths now watched their every step.
And truth itself demanded courage.
