The forest felt heavier after the Vault’s collapse. Ember dust drifted downward like drifting ash. Elias scanned the trees. Mira checked the scroll’s magical signature. Kaiden surveyed the ground for Marek’s footprints. They found a distinct trail leading south toward a region where the forest thinned and black volcanic ridges rose like claws from the earth.
They moved quickly. Time mattered now. Marek had gained ground and the Crown Chamber was no ordinary ruin. It responded to intention. Those who sought knowledge with selfish motives often triggered traps or illusions. But those who sought truth faced trials instead of death. Elias carried that hope in his heart as they followed the trail.
After an hour of steady movement they reached a rocky plateau cut by narrow cracks glowing with dim orange light. Mira said these were fire veins channels of ancient magic that powered parts of the Old Kingdom’s research structures. Some were still active centuries later. Kaiden tested the ground with his staff. It vibrated softly from the heat. Elias guided them cautiously forward.
The plateau opened into a valley hidden between two ridges. At the center stood a structure half buried in cooled magma. Carved pillars jutted from the ground supporting broken archways. Faded runes glowed faint blue across the stone. Elias recognized the architecture from old illustrations. This was one of the entry points to the inner ruins.
But something else stood in the valley. A small campsite lit by dim lanterns. Two Unbound Scribes guarded the entrance. Their scribing blades rested across their laps. They seemed unaware of Elias’s team approaching from above.
Kaiden said they could incapacitate the guards quickly. Elias said to avoid killing unless absolutely necessary. Mira activated a silent ward that masked sound. They descended into the valley shadows and approached the camp from two sides. Kaiden struck the first guard in the back of the neck knocking him unconscious. Mira used a binding charm to immobilize the second without harm. Elias inspected their gear. Both carried altered maps leading to the Crown Chamber. One map depicted the serpent migration as a barrier. Another displayed a false entrance that led to a pit trap.
Elias set the maps aside. He said the Unbound Scribes manipulated information as easily as breathing. Mira whispered that Marek must have intended to mislead anyone else entering the ruins. Elias nodded. They entered through the archway.
Inside the first chamber light filtered through cracks in the ceiling creating streaks across the floor. Ancient murals lined the walls depicting scholarly rituals. People chanting over floating manuscripts. Mages carving runes into stone. Explorers mapping lands that no longer matched the modern world. Mira took notes silently. Kaiden remained alert.
A narrow corridor stretched ahead. At the end flickered faint torchlight. They moved through the corridor until it opened into a long hall supported by towering pillars carved with serpents and geometric patterns. The air was thick with residual magic. Marek’s footprints crossed the dusty floor in a straight path.
They followed the prints until they reached another door. This one made of enchanted stone etched with layered runes. Some runes glowed faint gold while others shimmered with unstable violet energy. Mira moved closer and studied the runes. She said the door read intent. If someone wished to enter for destruction it would seal shut. If someone wished to enter for knowledge it would test them. Elias placed his hand on the door and focused on truth. The runes glowed softly then the door opened.
Inside the next chamber the walls were lined with floating parchment sheets circling slowly as though orbiting an unseen center. Each parchment held fragments of primordial theory. Equations describing magic’s root structure. Symbols that traced the origin of spells. Elias felt his breath catch. The Crown Chamber was near.
But footsteps echoed from the far end of the chamber. Marek stood before them holding an ancient lantern whose light emitted faint violet swirls. He stared at Elias with calm hostility. Behind him was another doorway leading deeper into the ruins.
Marek said he admired Elias’s persistence. He said most publishers feared these ruins. Elias replied that he feared lies more than ruins. Marek smirked. He said the world feared knowledge too much. Kingdoms obscured truth to maintain power. Guilds censored dangerous spells. And publishers chose what people could know. The Unbound Scribes sought to break all such chains.
Elias stepped forward refusing to look away. He said knowledge without structure caused chaos. Marek said chaos birthed evolution. Elias countered that evolution without guidance became destruction. Marek’s eyes narrowed. He said Elias spoke like the kings he claimed to oppose.
Kaiden stepped forward ready to strike but Elias raised a hand. Mira held the ward stone tight. It glowed faintly in Marek’s presence. She whispered that the lantern Marek carried amplified his spells but was unstable. If misused it could backfire.
Marek said he did not come for debate. He came to claim what lay deeper. He opened the lantern. Violet light spread across the chamber. The floating parchments shuddered. The runes on the walls flickered violently. Elias shouted for Mira to shield them. Kaiden braced himself. A wave of destabilizing magic burst from the lantern.
The chamber shook. Floating parchments scattered like startled birds. Runes glowed wildly. The doorway behind Marek cracked open revealing a spiral staircase descending into darkness. With a swift motion Marek leapt through the doorway and vanished down the stairs.
Elias steadied himself. The chamber groaned under the strain of disrupted magic. Mira cast stabilizing charms to prevent collapse. Kaiden moved toward the staircase but Elias stopped him. He said they needed to proceed carefully. Marek now held the lantern that allowed deeper access to primordial layers and the path ahead would not be simple.
With the stolen scroll secured and Marek ahead the race reached its critical point. Elias looked at the staircase disappearing into the depths of ancient knowledge. He tightened his grip on the scroll case.
He said the truth lived below
and they would find it
no matter the cost.
