Chapter 13

Chapter 13

Nov 16, 2025

The stairway leading down from the chamber felt colder than the air above. Elias gripped the stone railing as he began the descent. Mira followed close behind holding the glowing ward stone. Kaiden brought up the rear with his staff raised in silent caution. The stairs twisted in a broad spiral disappearing into a dim orange haze below. Faint echoes rose from the depths like old whispers. Elias sensed they had entered a part of the Old Kingdom ruins touched directly by primordial magic.

The walls were covered with runes etched in different eras. Some were simple and ancient while others were complex and modern. As they moved deeper torch crystals activated automatically glowing with soft amber light. The stairs curved again. Mira whispered that the spiral had a purposeful design. It represented the form of ancient knowledge, always looping downward into deeper meaning. Kaiden said he preferred knowledge that did not drag him underground. Elias smiled faintly despite the tension.

The deeper they walked the thicker the air became. The scent of burnt stone and old ink filled their lungs. The glow from Mira’s ward stone pulsed softly pointing toward the stolen scroll in Elias’s pack. It responded to the ruins as if it belonged here. Elias placed a steadying hand over the case. The scroll seemed to hum faintly.

They reached the bottom of the stairs where a vast circular hall opened before them. Runes covered every inch of stone. Large shelves carved directly into the walls held slabs of ancient knowledge etched into crystal panels. Some panels glowed faint blue. Others flickered like fading memories. Mira studied the nearest panel. She said these slabs contained primordial equations mapping the first flows of magic. Kaiden stepped closer and touched a panel. It felt warm. As if breathing.

In the center of the hall stood a stone dais. The remains of a shattered orb lay across it. Elias recognized the pieces. They belonged to the ancient memory orb said to keep records of lost spells. Someone had destroyed it recently. Marek. He must have shattered it to prevent Elias from gaining access. Elias clenched his fists. Marek understood the value of this place and wanted its secrets for himself.

A soft humming sound echoed from the hallway ahead. Not a creature. A magical resonance. Elias motioned for silence. They moved toward the source. The hallway opened into another chamber filled with floating sigils, rotating slowly in intricate orbits. At the far end stood Marek Hollow. The violet lantern floated beside him casting unnatural shadows across the walls.

Marek spoke without turning around. He said the Crown Chamber lay beyond the final seal. He traced his hand across a large stone circle with layered symbols. Sparks leapt from his fingers. The seal flickered. Marek turned to face Elias and his team. He said Elias had come far but still did not understand. He said the chamber contained primordial theory capable of shifting power across the world. And he said the Unbound Scribes had waited generations for this moment.

Elias stepped forward. He said knowledge was not meant to be twisted. Marek argued that knowledge bound by rules was not true knowledge. He said freedom required uncertainty and chaos and that the structure Elias defended only held the world in place so the powerful could remain powerful.

Kaiden growled under his breath. Mira raised the ward stone. Elias kept his voice calm. He said truth was not imprisonment. Truth was stability. Marek shook his head. He said Elias allowed fear to chain him. Then he placed both hands on the seal and spoke a long incantation.

The seal trembled. The runes glowed bright violet. Mira gasped as the chamber’s air surged outward. A shockwave knocked Elias backward. Kaiden steadied him. The runes cracked. The seal broke apart with a thunderous shatter. Beyond it lay a narrow passage illuminated by golden light. Marek stepped inside.

Elias shouted but Marek disappeared down the passage. Mira helped Elias stand. Kaiden said they could not wait. They rushed into the passage after Marek.

The passage narrowed and opened into a tall circular room. Golden runes flowed up the walls like living ink. A suspended platform floated at the center holding a single pedestal. On the pedestal hovered a prism of ancient energy. Inside the prism swirled faint writings, shifting symbols, and glowing shapes that seemed alive. Elias realized this was the heart of the Crown Chamber. The Primordial Archive.

Marek stood before the pedestal. His lantern now glowed violently. Unstable energy surged outward. The chamber shook. Symbols on the platform flared brightly as if resisting him. Elias shouted for him to stop. Marek ignored him.

Elias stepped forward. Marek raised his hand and a wave of violet energy launched toward Elias. Mira cast a barrier. The attack hit the barrier with a loud crack sending Mira stumbling backward. Kaiden ran to support her.

Elias advanced again. Marek shouted that the world needed to be undone so it could be rebuilt. Elias rejected the idea. Truth was not meant to break. It was meant to guide. Marek opened the lantern. A vortex of violet light roared forward. The prism flickered violently. The symbols inside spiraled out of control.

Mira gasped. She said Marek was destabilizing the Primordial Archive. If the prism broke the entire ruin could collapse. Elias moved instinctively. He sprinted across the chamber while Kaiden charged with him. Marek fired unstable energy again. Kaiden swung his staff downward breaking the attack’s trajectory.

Elias leapt toward the pedestal. He grabbed the prism with both hands. It burned like fire but he held firm. The prism reacted to him. Golden runes wrapped around his arms. Marek shouted in disbelief. He said the prism should not respond to a publisher. Elias said truth responded to those who protected it.

The chamber roared with energy. Marek released a final surge of chaotic magic. Elias held the prism tightly. The light expanded outward swallowing the room.

And everything went white.
