The team moved quickly across the ridge path while morning light poured between the peaks like molten gold. Evan led from the front scanning every angle of the rock ahead. Tallo followed lightly Mira stayed close to the center and Bran took the rear carrying extra anchor stakes and a heavier rope. Serana kept pace beside Evan not speaking but watching him with a quiet intensity.
The horn from the north tower had signaled something dangerous. Beast nests rarely awakened this close to Highpass Refuge and when they did it meant shifts in the mountain’s deeper structure. The glowing veins along the distant cliffs pulsed more brightly than usual as if the world itself was unsettled.
Evan slowed as the trail curved sharply upward. He crouched examined the stone texture and pressed his palm against the surface.
Warm he whispered Too warm for morning sun Something is below the surface
Serana knelt beside him.
The beasts heat the stone when they nest she said Their bodies change the air and rock near them
Evan nodded.
Then we’re close But we don’t rush We plan
He looked up at the ridge. A narrow traverse led to a natural balcony that overlooked a steep drop. That vantage point would give them a view of the nest without exposing them.
He pointed.
We go there Tallo take left route Mira follow me Bran watch the rear for rock shifts
They moved carefully. The traverse was thin only wide enough for a single boot and slanted downward. Evan placed each step slowly reading the wall’s angles. Mira followed smoothly using all the techniques he drilled that morning. Tallo moved like he weighed nothing. Bran moved slower but stable anchoring rope segments as he went.
When they reached the natural balcony the wind shifted bringing with it a strong sulfur scent. Evan crouched behind a cluster of stone spires and peered over the edge.
A cavern entrance yawned from the mountain wall below glowing faintly with green light. Strange crystals lined the mouth of the cave and the ground around it was covered in claw marks. Something large moved inside sending low vibrations up through the stone.
Mira inhaled softly.
That is bigger than a normal nest
Bran tightened his grip on his spear.
It sounds like more than one creature
Serana leaned close.
Our scouts saw only a single adult Weeks ago three foragers disappeared near this ridge If a brood formed inside the nest we must destroy it
Evan studied the cavern shape the angles of approach the structure of the ridge around it. The cavern mouth sat beneath an overhanging ledge. Loose rock surrounded it unstable enough to collapse under force.
He whispered
We can trigger a controlled slide block the nest entrance limit the beasts ability to escape
Tallo frowned.
You want to bury them
Temporarily Evan said We do not have strength to fight a nest inside But if we seal the entrance we control the field
Serana nodded.
Smart But risky If the collapse spreads the ridge could fall on us
Evan ran his finger over the rock feeling texture and temperature.
No This section is stable Only the loose cap rock will fall
Bran knelt beside him examining the slope.
That could work he said How do we trigger it
Evan pointed at a crack line above the overhang.
We place anchors here tie a tension rope cross it with a pull line Then Bran applies force at the right angle
Bran grinned.
Breaking stone I can do
Tallo looked impressed.
Your mind is sharp coach I see things differently because of you
Evan felt a strange warmth in his chest. Teaching people to climb had always mattered to him but here it meant survival.
All right Evan said Let’s set up
They climbed upward to the crack line above the nest mouth. Evan chose precise anchor points teaching the team how to test each spot. Mira placed her anchor with perfect alignment on her first try drawing a quiet approving nod from Evan. Together they rigged a tension rope across the unstable rock. Bran looped the pull line around his waist and braced his feet.
Ready Evan asked
Bran nodded
Evan raised his hand signaling for silence. The nest rumbled below them. Something heavy scraped inside the cavern.
Now Evan whispered
Bran pulled
The upper rock shifted groaned then cracked. A sheet of stone slid free crashing down onto the cavern mouth. Dust exploded outward. A furious roar erupted from within but the entrance had narrowed to a small gap not large enough for a beast to pass.
Mira swallowed hard.
We did it
Not yet Evan said The nest isnt destroyed only sealed The beasts will try to break out We need to mark escape routes If they push upward the ridge could destabilize
Serana nodded grimly.
We must be ready when they emerge
Evan scanned the ridge again noticing deeper cracks leading toward the summit. Something about them felt unnatural too straight too patterned. A faint glow traced along the cracks like veins of light that pulsed with slow rhythm.
He whispered
This isnt just a nest Something else is affecting the mountain
As they prepared to descend the ridge trembled sharply. Loose stones rolled past their feet. Bran steadied himself while Tallo gripped a boulder.
Mira looked at Evan.
The mountain feels angry
Evan stared at the glowing cracks.
Or waking
The tremor stopped as quickly as it began but the air felt charged with tension. Evan turned to his team.
We need to warn the refuge This nest is only the beginning Something larger is shifting in this range
Serana met his eyes.
Then we must prepare for the climb ahead
They moved quickly back toward Highpass Refuge their silhouettes crossing the ridge under a sky streaked with glowing clouds while distant roars echoed through the mountains like the heartbeat of something ancient and immense.
The world was changing
And Evan could feel the climb steepening
