They rested on a stable ledge halfway down the ridge catching their breath. The mountain had fallen silent again but the air felt charged as if holding its breath. Evan studied the glowing cracks above them tracing their pattern with narrowed eyes.
Serana spoke first.
You saw something up there Something that frightened you
Evan nodded slowly.
Something intelligent is inside that basin Something that left tracks It is not a beast And the mountain is responding to it
Bran crossed his arms.
You think something is controlling the mountain
Not controlling Evan said Activating
Tallo tilted his head.
Like a key
Evan sighed.
Maybe
Mira pointed at the fissure glowing far above.
If something is waking up what does it want
Elya whispered.
What if it is calling something
The idea unsettled everyone. Evan looked at the sky. The glowing clouds were shifting forming curved patterns almost symmetrical like runes.
He spoke quietly.
The sky matches the stones These symbols across the peaks The veins in the rock They’re a system All connected
Den frowned.
A system built by who
Evan shook his head.
Not who What The mountains themselves are shaped But not naturally Something ancient designed them
Hesh swallowed hard.
Then we are standing inside something built by giants or gods
Evan did not answer. He felt the truth in the stone but had no words for it. The tremors the glowing the tracks the pulsing fissure all pointed to something much larger than a simple beast surge.
We need to map everything we saw today Evan said And warn the refuge This could change how everyone lives in these mountains
They descended carefully. The stone trembled occasionally but never as violently as before. When they reached the mid ridge Tallo froze and pointed at a shadow near a cliff.
Something moved he whispered
The team lowered into ready stances. Evan gripped his rope axe scanning the area. A tall thin shape crouched behind a cluster of stones. Mira stepped quietly to the side narrowing her eyes.
It’s hurt she said softly
They approached slowly. The shape hunched forward trembling. When they came closer it lifted its head revealing a creature unlike any they had seen. It had long limbs too slender for a beast glowing veins under pale skin and eyes that shimmered like crystal light. It made no aggressive move just stared at them with fear and confusion.
Elya knelt slowly.
Its injured It fled from the basin collapse
Bran lowered his spear.
It does not seem hostile
Evan crouched near it. The creature’s veins glowed in the same pattern as the mountain cracks. The light pulsed weakly as if its strength came from the mountain’s energy.
He whispered.
It is connected to the mountain
The creature trembled and lifted an arm pointing up toward the peaks then toward the fissure then toward Evan.
Mira inhaled sharply.
Its trying to warn us
Suddenly the ground trembled again. The creature cried out softly curling its limbs.
Evan steadied himself.
Another pulse Something deeper
The tremor passed. The creature lowered its arm and motioned weakly downward as if urging them to flee.
Evan nodded.
We understand We’re going
They carried the creature carefully along the ridge until they reached a lower shelf safe from collapse zones. It watched them with dim glowing eyes then pointed one last time toward the peaks before fading into stillness.
Tallo whispered.
Did it die
Elya shook her head.
No Just sleeping It is exhausted
Den glanced nervously at the mountain.
If that creature came from the core something else may follow
Evan looked toward Highpass Refuge far below resting calmly on the terraces carved into the mountain’s flank. Smoke from morning fires drifted upward peaceful unaware.
He tightened his harness slowly.
We must warn them Tonight
As they descended the final ridge the sky above pulsed again with lines of glowing light forming shapes like warnings etched across the heavens.
Evan felt the weight of what awaited.
The mountain was waking
Something was returning
And the world was not ready
