Night settled over Highpass Refuge with a stillness that felt unnatural. Lanterns flickered along the terraces and people moved quietly between stone homes whispering about the tremors that shook the ridges earlier. Evan led the team into the central hall where Serana waited, posture straight and tense. The faint glow from the mountain veins reflected in her eyes like distant fire.
She looked at Evan first.
You returned But your faces tell me something followed you back
Evan placed his gear on a low stone table.
Not a beast he said Something else Something tied to the mountain
He nodded to Tallo and Bran who brought forward the wrapped creature they had rescued. Serana’s hand moved instinctively to her spear but Evan raised a calming gesture.
It isnt hostile he said Its scared and weak It fled the collapse
Serana approached cautiously. When Tallo unwrapped a corner the creature stirred, its pale skin glowing faintly with thin veins of light. Its limbs were long, delicate, almost fragile. Its eyes opened slowly and shimmering bands of light rippled inside them. It made a soft clicking sound then lowered its head.
Serana whispered.
Its veins match the mountains fractures
Elya nodded.
The creature reacts to the pulses The fissure shook it like a storm shakes a tree
Evan stepped closer.
It tried to warn us It pointed at the peaks and then at the fissure It knows something is waking
The creature looked at Evan then placed its thin hand against the stone floor. A faint glow spread from its palm forming a circular pattern like a rune or map. The villagers murmured in awe. Mira knelt beside the creature, studying the symbol.
This isn’t random She said It’s drawing something
The glow expanded revealing a rough shape that resembled the mountain range but twisted deeper thicker glowing like a branching network beneath the stone.
Bran frowned.
Those are not mountain lines Those are underground paths
Evan nodded.
A living system A channel of energy beneath the surface And that red core we saw in the basin may be the center of the entire network
Serana exhaled slowly.
You think the creature understands the mountain better than we ever could
Evan looked at the glowing map as it pulsed in a heartbeat rhythm.
It might be part of the mountain
The creature lifted its head again staring directly at Evan. Its eyes flickered and it placed a hand on its own chest then pressed that hand back against the glowing mountain veins in the floor. Evan understood instantly.
It lives because the mountain lives
Serana stepped back.
Then if the mountain is waking… whatever this creature is… will awaken too
The creature shivered suddenly. The glow from its veins dimmed. Elya leaned forward in alarm.
Its weakening It needs something
Evan touched the warm stone.
The mountain pulses help it If the fissure is unstable the flow is disrupted Its life depends on the rhythm staying steady
Serana looked at Evan.
If the mountain’s heart changes the creature may die And what if more like it live deeper inside
Evan’s jaw tightened.
Then we need to understand what is changing And fast
He rolled out his notebook and drew the glowing basin from memory adding the new underground network the creature displayed.
The pulses are accelerating Evan said If this continues the entire ridge system could shift causing collapses in every direction including the refuge
Silence fell heavy.
Finally Serana spoke.
Then you climb tomorrow And you climb to the highest point You must find the source
Evan nodded once.
We leave at dawn
