Evan stepped onto the highest terrace after leaving the hall. The cold air hit his face sharply carrying the faint metallic taste that always preceded a mountain shift. The glowing sky clouds had darkened, swirling slowly in deliberate arcs as though following instructions from an unseen hand.
Mira approached quietly.
Could you not sleep
Evan shook his head.
The creature’s warning won’t leave my mind Something big is coming
Mira leaned on the stone railing.
In my family we believed the mountains sleep and wake like old spirits That tremor felt like one taking a breath
Evan glanced at her.
Do you think the mountain itself could be conscious
She shrugged slightly.
After what we saw today I don’t know what is impossible anymore
For a while they stood together listening to the distant hum beneath the stone. Then a sudden streak of light cut across the sky like a burning arrow. Mira gasped softly. Another streak followed then another until dozens of glowing trails fell from the clouds.
Bran hurried up the steps.
Stars are falling he shouted The sky is burning
Villagers rushed out of their homes pointing at the sky. The falling lights arced toward the horizon not crashing but dispersing into glowing dust that drifted like ash.
Tallo whispered.
This is no storm This is something calling
Evan watched carefully. The dust gathered along the mountain’s ridges forming faint lines exactly where the glowing veins were strongest on the stone.
Mira grabbed his arm.
The sky connects to the mountain The lines match
Evan felt a chill.
These are signals Signs Sent to activate something
He pulled out his map and traced the sky lines as they converged toward one peak.
This one Mira said quietly The highest summit
Evan pressed the charcoal down hard.
The mountain is focusing power there
Suddenly the creature inside the hall cried out a long trembling sound that shook the terraces. Evan and the team sprinted back inside.
The creature lay curled, glowing violently. Its veins pulsed erratically, light surging and collapsing like a failing heartbeat.
Elya knelt beside it.
The falling lights are overwhelming it The energy flow is too strong It cannot bear the surge
Evan touched the floor. It was scorching hot.
The mountain is shifting faster The pulses are rising in intensity Something is breaking the balance
The creature raised its hand weakly pointing again to the summit the same one the sky dust indicated. Its breath came in short trembling bursts.
Evan whispered.
That is the key Everything begins there
Serana entered the hall gripping her spear.
The skyfall continues The villagers are frightened We need answers at dawn
Evan stood slowly his shadow cast long by the creature’s glow.
Then we climb at first light We climb straight to the summit
Tallo stepped forward.
Through the breathing veins
Mira tightened her gloves.
Across the storm ridge
Bran cracked his knuckles.
Past whatever woke up beneath the stone
Elya set her pack down.
And through whatever left those tracks in the basin
Serana looked at them one by one then at Evan.
This will be the most dangerous ascent in any record Are you ready to face something none of us understand
Evan breathed deep steady.
The mountain is calling us And a climber always follows the line the world puts in front of him
The creature’s glow dimmed again But its eyes remained locked on Evan as if entrusting him with the world’s oldest secret.
Outside more streaks of light fell painting the sky with warnings.
Tomorrow the real climb would begin
A climb not toward a peak
But toward the truth buried under a living world of stone
