That time, they wouldn’t wait for things to calm down. Selene was determined to find the truth about her memories and there was just one more goal: Tapu Fini, the Guardian of Poni Island. The group decided to stay over in Ula’Ula Island and reenergize themselves before their last adventure. At sunrise, they were already on the yacht towards the last island in the Alola region. A place Selene knew quite well: that was Haki’s home, where they first met each other. It had been a long time since the girl visited that place and so many things have happened since then. Her journey to unfold the mystery of her memories had led her there once again, but that time, she didn’t go just with Professor Kukui. All her friends were by her side.
After a couple of hours sailing in the sea, they arrived at Seafolk Village, once again being welcomed by Hapu, the Kahuna of the island, who was informed by Professor Kukui of all the events up to that day. She would be their guide towards the Ruins of Hope, where they hoped to find Tapu Fini. In other circumstances, the energetic farmer wouldn’t bring anybody to such a place, but given Selene’s story and after checking how well she trained Haki during those past months, she obliged. Without nothing else to discuss, they all ventured onto Poni Plains, looking for the route that led them to the ruins. However, they barely walked until the village was gone from their sight when a strange scream reached them. Everybody looked around them, but only when they checked the sky, they noticed something flying towards them. Within seconds, a strange creature appeared in front of them.
A blue shell that resembled the head of a fish open in half, showing a human-like figure inside it. This figure was black and thin, with delicate arms, big beautiful eyes and a light blue mane falling from its head that looked like fins. Nobody needed to ask: that was Tapu Fini. It wasn’t the Pokémon itself that shocked them all, but the fact that the Guardian appeared in front of them so easily. In fact, the one most shocked about it was Hapu.
“Tapu Fini! Whatcha doin’ here?”, asked Hapu.
However, Tapu Fini didn’t even look at the Kahuna it specifically chose in the past. At that moment, its eyes were glued on Selene, who looked back at the Pokémon. The girl walked forward and faced the Pokémon while frowning.
“You know why I’m here”, declared Selene.
Tapu Fini nodded. It was the first time Selene felt one of the Guardians acknowledge their implication. Then, the Pokémon turned to its side and extended one of its arms, pointing at a distant location.
“Meet us where the stars are revered. Only then you will know about your past. That is… if you can reach such a place”.
Tapu Fini’s words echoed inside everybody’s minds. Only Hapu was shocked at this revelation, with the others already being used to such ability. Selene wanted to inquire more about those instructions, but the Pokémon left as quickly as it first arrived, flying high into the sky. The girl was frustrated, but knew that challenge meant a chance to get all the answers she was looking for. She looked at the professor, asking for some explanation with her eyes.
“‘Where the stars are revered’… I guess that is…”, said Kukui while looking at Hapu.
“Right, the Altar of Sunne and Moone, hidden within this island. It’s in ruins now”, explained Hapu. “We gotta go through the caves in the mountain. We may face sum’ strong Pokémon on the way there”.
The Altar of Sunne and Moone. Not even the others kids heard so much about that place. Only Lillie had occasionally read its name, only referenced in books about other topics from the region. Why Tapu Fini would challenge Selene to go there instead of its own sanctuary was a mystery. However, they knew the Guardian would wait there and that was all they needed to know. The group braced themselves and took a new direction towards the mountain area.
It was by far one of the roughest areas in the whole region and the kids found out why. Most of the paths were very narrow, next to big rock walls, making progress quite hard. The more they climbed, the scarier the journey became, especially at the few occasions they had to cross a hanging bridge. At some points they had to go through some caves that belong to a bigger net of holes within the rock. Thankfully, Hapu was there to guide everybody, but that trip was proving to be much harder than their previous adventures. Selene felt bad for her friends, having to go through all that just for her sake. However, whenever she looked at them, whether talking to or helping each other, they were all smiling. Nobody regretted being there. Even if she didn’t say it at that moment, she was grateful to them all. She embraced that feeling in her heart that allowed her to move forward.
The path was full of obstacles, but there were no signs of wild Pokémon, contrary to Hapu’s initial warning. It made sense that there were no creatures outside, except for some that could fly, but not seeing any Pokémon inside the caves was strange. Some of the kids began suspecting Tapu Fini could be behind such a strange event, although the Kahuna dissuaded their worries, saying that the Guardian didn’t have that kind of control over other Pokémon. If there was no living creature at that moment, there had to be a good reason for that. Everybody sharped their senses during the road ahead, but nothing happened.
After walking for some hours through narrow paths and caves, they arrived into a big chamber inside the mountain. The walls were full of holes that led deeper into the mountain and paths that connected to the central area. At the other side of the chamber, everybody could see another hole, this one showing sunlight, as if inviting them to leave the place.
“When we get outside, it’ll be a short track to reach the ruins. We can take this chance to rest”, suggested Hapu.
A well-deserved rest was what everybody needed after all that walking. Selene really needed that rest. Knowing that the goal was so close, she began feeling nervous. The answers she was looking for were right around the corner. That thought alone made her heart beat faster. Right when she was joining the others, who sat down and brought out some foods and beverages, she heard rustling near her. The girl turned her head to the side to find out something lurking at one dark corner of the cave. That shadow walked forward slowly, revealing a small group of Jangmo-o that looked at her with curiosity. She made a small jump, surprised at the presence of those Pokémon. The others noticed Selene’s reaction and looked at the dragons as well.
“Look, those are Jangmo-o!”, exclaimed Sophocles.
“Wait, could it be…?”.
Professor Kukui had a small suspicion, but he was not the only one. Hapu and Selene had the same idea, not needing to tell each other. Out of curiosity. Selene approached the Jangmo-o group, about to ask them something. Before she could do that, Haki came out of her Poké Ball by herself, accompanied by the usual light. The eyes of all those Pokémon met, recognizing each other instantly. Haki ran towards the Jangmo-o, which jumped around the dragon happily.
“I thought so! Those are Haki’s friends!”, exclaimed Selene with happiness.
Haki’s friends from her old pack. It had been months since they last saw each other. Of course they would be happy at their sudden reunion! From that pack, the children were the most accepting towards Haki being a trans Pokémon and welcomed her in their games. Seeing her old friends again was something to celebrate. Selene felt really happy for her partner. Everybody else felt moved at the scene… except Haku, who said with shocked expression.
“Wait a sec… Jangmo-o don’t usually leave their area, especially young ones. That’s unless… they’re following… their leader”.
