So this is a real thing you can do. My family has been on both ends of this. As a kid I didn't know when my (then single) mom did it for me and my siblings. She didn't tell us until we were adults and were able to all pool our resources to do it for other families instead. It is intensely gratifying to be able to help a family down on their luck to have a big christmas.
