Aaah, miscommunication, the good, old engine of romantic stories. I understand Hayakawa's reactions, though. It doesn't matter if Shinji liked him back - he basically slapped Hayakawa's face when he denied their feelings to protect himself. And his reaction at the end, well- this day has been... kinda hectic for him.
