The kingdom is made up of an archipelago.

The borders are waterspouts that are close together but are constantly changing positions making it impossible to get through without a guide. 

Their economy is based on tourism, fishing, pearl farms, seashell decorations and ornaments, sea navigation, ship building and having a major trading hub. 

The monarchy are heavily involved in politics and are beloved by the citizens. However, when Fangtooth took the throne after the succession war, he had his surviving siblings be managers of each of the islands, but all ultimately are ruled under the reigning monarch. This has been the case since Fangtooth’s reign to the current monarch. 

For 900 years the archipelago was made up of hundreds of different tribes but then was combined to form a kingdom. It has been a kingdom for 706 years.  

There have been 17 rulers, two usurpers and one year where there were no rulers. 

History: 

Before being a kingdom there were hundreds of different clans spread across the archipelago but due to foreign invaders they had to combine their forces and fight the invaders, after three years of was the invaders were defeated and the family that had commanded the people and took care of the people were crowned as monarchy, marking the beginning of a kingdom. 

The first monarch was a queen and king. The queen was the one to lead the armies and the king was the one to take care and lead the people

Although the majority of clans agreed to have them become the rulers, some thought they shouldn’t be the rulers so after five years they formed an army and started a civil war. After four years the attempted usurpers were defeated and killed 

The king ruled for another thirty years and the queen died eleven years later. 

Their eldest child, Manta Ray, ascended the throne at the age of thirty

Manta Ray started to build a foundation for prosperity and was revered as one of the greatest rulers of that time period, he ruled for forty years before resigning his position to his child

His daughter, Tiger shark, was the next ruler, she took over the throne at twenty and was focused on military development and ruled for fifty years before dying and passing the throne onto her eldest daughter

Leopard shark was the next ruler. With the increase of people exploring out of their home lands, she expanded into tourism and started to allow people to go onto the island, supplying natives to the archipelago jobs to guide people through the water spouts that surround the islands. She died after twenty years of ruling, during childbirth. 

After Leopard Shark died, a close aide took over while the child was still young and usurped the throne, they blocked any information about the child from being revealed, saying the child had died while keeping him as a servant. The usurper ruled for ten years and died from old age, it was revealed after the usurper died that the child that was treated as a servant was the true heir and started to learn about ruling the kingdom

The child was named Orca, ascended the throne at twenty and ruled for fifty years before resigning and passing the crown onto his child, Sting Ray 

Sting Ray ascended the throne at 23 years old and focused on developing all areas, such as education, military, communication, medical etc. and ruled for sixty years before dying and leaving his oldest child, Moray Eel 

Moray Eel ascended the throne at forty and focused on fishing and trading, she ruled for forty five years before dying 

Basket Star was the next ruler who ascended at twenty six. She had many children and became closer to a tyrant than a good ruler, caring more about pleasure than looking after her children. Her ruling caused a civil war that resulted in her being killed along with five of her twelve children after being queen for six years. Her remaining children left the archipelago and went into hiding 

A usurper took over the throne and became a tyrant, stopping all trade and tourism, building up the military, limiting education etc, ruled for seventy years before getting poisoned and dying, people celebrated and looked for the children that went into hiding 

The child of one of the children who went into hiding was found and was brought back and learned how to run the kingdom and restore some of the lost diplomatic relations, one of which was through having multiple wives from other kingdoms and countries which became integrated into the royal family’s custom. Once ascending the throne fully, at the age of 35, he started to cut back on military spending and focused on stabilising the throne, politics and diplomatic relations. He remained ruling for thirty years. He had many children but did not name a successor. 

For one year there was no ruler and a war of succession arose. Eight of his twenty children resigned from the war early on, followed by three resigning but following one of their other siblings, seven dying from assassinations and one being left unable to walk after getting into a carriage accident when visiting another country. 

Fangtooth was the one to ascend the throne at the age of twenty. Rather than banishing her siblings she created a new department where each of them looked over an island each but she still overlooked all the islands. She also created a law where the possible heirs would be frequently tested and given plots of lands on an island and whoever could develop and maintain those areas the best and whoever did the bests in the tests would then be given a task for them to do, whoever completed it in the best way would then be chosen as the next ruler, however they would constantly have to be tested until they ascend the throne. She ruled for sixty years until she stepped down and had her fifth child, armorhead, ascend the throne. 

Armorhead, age thirty, focused on trade, fishery, pearl farms and started a navigation industry where the natives would navigate the seas for people from other countries. He ruled for sixty years before dying. His twelfth child, Owlfish, ascended the throne next. 

Owlfish ascended the throne at eighteen, she focused on all areas equally, she only ruled for three years due to dying from an illness, the sixth child of armorhead ascended the throne 

Angel shark was the next monarch at age twenty nine. She focused on developing education and medicine. She ruled for fifty years and resigned the throne to her seventeenth child, Bonito. 

Bonito, age twenty, ascended the throne, He focused on entertainment, he ruled for one year before dying from a carriage accident, he had one child who was six months old 

Bonito’s first wife, Alyssum, who originally came from the Kelsha Empire and was twenty two at the time of his death, ruled for eighteen years before resigning the crown back to the child, Sablefish. Alyssum followed in Bonito’s ideas in focusing on entertainment, but she als expanded architecture and the military. Although Sablefish was not her child but the child of Bonito’s third wife, she still treated her as her own child. 

Sablefish ascended the throne at eighteen and focused on architecture, education and diplomacy. He reigned for seventy two years before resigning the crown to the current monarch, Wolf Eel.

Wolf Eel, the current monarch, rose to the throne at thirty years old. She has been ruling for twenty years and is focusing on all areas rather than one specific area.

People name their children after water creatures (fish, sharks, crabs etc) which has predated the written history of the kingdom. 

Unlike with the empires, where the imperial family has powers that are inherited, the royal family of the Barrat Kingdom are like everyone else (having powers specific to them), they maintain power by maintaining the balance between the upper class and lower class, maintaining diplomatic relationships through marriages, treaties etc. 

They worship four different gods and goddesses, the gender and names change depending on the island. 

God(dess) of water (water itself, sea creatures, natural disasters to do with water such as flooding, everything that appears underwater including volcanoes etc)-Awhalia/Awhala

God(dess) of day (the sun, light, the sky in the day, weather when it’s light, shadows in terms of the creations of them, heat, planets and stars etc when visible in the day)-Traylah/Trahla 

God(dess) of night (moon, stars, darkness, cold, weather when it’s dark, shadows in terms of the darkness of them, the sky in the night. Planets etc when they are visible in the night sky, etc)- Shralda/Shraldaria

God(dess) of sailing (sailing, celestial navigation, fishing, boats, guiding sailors and those lost at sea, safe passage through the waterspout barrier, warning of omens in the sea)- Flariah, Farlah

No nobility or class system, apart from some people being rich and others are not, however, they interact with each other naturally and respect each other (the rich respect and understand that the poor are the ones who do the manual work and are the backbone for their way of life and the poor respect and understand that the rich are the ones who protect them, give them opportunities, and allows the kingdom to function and not be in chaos) 

As long as a person has skills, abilities and proves themselves, they can become wealthy, people who do not have skills, lack abilities and do not prove themselves will lose their wealth quickly. 

The wealthy must contribute a certain percentage of their personal wealth to either a person who lacks financial support but has a lot of potential, to a school or small business, to the kingdom's vault or anywhere that supports the people every month. 

A person is able to inherit their family’s wealth which means some families have been in higher wealth for generations. 

If a person who has the financial means to do so does not contribute financially to the kingdom, they will be stripped of their money, lands and house and will have to pay a fine. They will be unable to raise their wealth as when they meet a certain amount of money it will be confiscated. There is someone who monitors these people.

On average are about seven feet tall and have long limbs 

More resistance to both heat and cold 

Slight webbing between their fingers and toes 

Resistance to salt 

Skin has lots of different oils 

Eyes adapt quickly to light, distance and darkness 

Can spend up to six hours underwater as long as they resurface for at least five minutes after three hours. 

Hair tends to be blue or green 

Eyes are rounded and tend to be green or blue

They have gills that are closed when on land but get exposed when submerged in water but can only extract small amounts of oxygen every few minutes, not enough to last six hours without coming up for air.

Compared to the Olsharla Empire the kingdom is very lively and busy 

People learn about magic through their parents but go to a school once they gain control over their general magic. 

Personal magic is not prioritised over general magic. 

There isn’t really any prejudices against certain personal magic but people who have personal magic to do with water are more likely to be respected 

Magical beasts are seen in one of three ways: 

servants of the gods and beings who support and help people who need it most

 beings that show up at times and places that disaster will strike 

or as malevolent beings who go against the gods and harm people. 

The way people see the magical beasts depends on the species, abilities and how dangerous they can be.
