A slight bitter smile finally stretched his lips.
" This kid has became strong..." he whispered.
His gaze rose to the vault of the dome, as if he was looking for a star he had lost a long time ago.
The king left the treasure room, the heavy mechanisms closing behind.
The torches that illuminated the underground corridors flickered slightly as he passed, projecting thick dancing reflections on the walls.
Raphael slowly went up the stairs in a spiral, his eyes dark, his mind still weighed down. He no longer knew how long he had been there... When he finally emerged in one of the upper wings of the palace, he was surprised to see that night had fallen.
The moonlight crossed the large stained glass windows, flooding the corridors with a cold white glow. The king walked for a few more moments, then stopped in front of a high open window, letting a sweet and fresh night breeze pass. The royal gardens stretched further down, peaceful and silent, lulled by the discreet sounds of the night.
Raphael slid a hand over his hair and sighed for a long time.
" I'm already so exhausted..." he whispered, while looking at the lights of the capital in the distance.
But a sweet smile stretched his lips.
" You don't have to worry, my children. I will do everything in my power to allow you to grow in peace and always keep smiling..."
He closed his eyes for a moment.
" Even if I have to sacrifice myself... I will do everything I can to get there. "
He then turned away from the window and resumed his walk, crossing the corridors with a silent step. After a few minutes, he arrived in front of the royal suite.
He opened the door slowly, without making a sound.
Inside, Arianne slept peacefully, lying on her side.
Silk sheets slid over his sleeping body, and a few strands fell back on his face. The king approached, gently spread the hair that covered his forehead, then leaned over to place a tender kiss.
"I love you, Arianne. "
Right next door, in a cradle carved in a hand-carved light wood, Lucas was sleeping with his fists. Seeing him asleep, a smile was born on Raphael's lips. So he leaned over, and gently stroked the baby's little round cheek.
Then in a soft voice he whispered:
"I love you, my son. "
Then he straightened up, and went to another room. The room of his first son, the first prince... Dayvon.
He slept on his side, one leg crossed the blankets. Raphael knelt at his side, his eyes tender.
He watched him for a moment in silence, before placing a kiss on his forehead.
"Daddy will always be there for you, son."
He then discreetly left the room, and went to that of Layna, his daughter. Like her brothers, she slept soundly. He stayed for a moment to observe him, before whispering softly:
"I hope you will always grow up with a smile, my daughter. "
Finally, he returned to the royal suite next to Arianne. His face was peaceful, but his eyes betrayed deep fatigue.
To be continued...
