These are characters from a story called Robot Planet. The main premise is that there’s a planet which humans have mined out and abandoned, along with the robots who used to work there. The robots carried on and developed a society of their own. It’s been so long since any of them have seen a human that they pretty much forgot all about them.
One day a robot finds a music box and it triggers him for some reason, he starts seeing trippy stuff such as a spaceship landing and humans coming out of it-the equivalent of witnessing an alien visitation. Everyone treats him as nuts and he’s about to be formatted but runs away to hide in a garbage dump where he finds other rogue robots. They’re constantly hunted by the police.
Eventually a human cargo ship makes an emergency landing in the garbage dump and the crew discovers the bots living there and learns of their plight. The humans invite the robots to come with them but they can’t take on the extra weight, so after the robots agree to it, the crew removes their brains (aka CPU’s) and once they arrive safely on Earth, they’re given new bodies.
