Complicated parents are my favourite topic.
I think everyone has that moment when they realise their parents aren't going to be around forever, and I think this is that moment for Cliff with his mum.
He already lost his dad to suicide, after he had a bad fall and became disabled, so Cliff is especially scared to face this moment.

People have asked whether Cliffs mum knows he's gay, and whether she knows about the sex work. I think she probably knows about both, but very much does not want to know about the latter. I think it's possible the police brought him home one time when he was in and out of home and she found out that way. She doesn't approve at all, and hopes he doesn't do it anymore but won't ask. (This is very British, we don't talk about things.)
I also think...because I don't really want to get into the drama of him coming out, it's better if she knows he's gay. I don't know if she'd fully get it, or be very good, but she does love him to bits.

The feels are strong here. I had an alcoholic father, and my brother died from alcoholism this past summer - alcoholism that he learned/inherited from my father.
