Dorian, small backpack on his shoulders, walked briskly out of the elementary school gates with eager steps. Today marked the third week of the new term, and he had gradually grown accustomed to life as a first grader, yet his mind was filling with more and more questions.
"Little Milkshake!" Suolan's gentle voice came from nearby. He was standing under a large tree by the school gate, his long rosy brown hair styled in a beautiful vintage updo. Other parents picking up their children kept stealing glances at this impossibly beautiful papa, but Suolan had long grown used to such looks.
Dorian jogged over and threw himself into Suolan's arms, questions gathering in his blue-gold eyes.
"Papa~ I have so many questions to ask you!" Little Dorian tilted his head up, childlike earnestness on his face.
"What questions?" Suolan crouched down, gently stroking his son's short ash-beige hair.
"Why does Andrea's dad have to leave so early every day and come home so late? Why did Maria say her mom has to go somewhere else for three days and can't be with her? Why do Luca's parents still have to work on weekends?"
Suolan blinked his amethyst eyes, recognizing the heart of the matter. "Because they have to work to earn money, sweetheart."
"But... don't you and Dad have to work?" Dorian furrowed his brow.
The question left Suolan caught between laughter and tears. Indeed, in Dorian's mind, Lleuad was home every day, either sweating through workouts in the home training room, or helping with cleaning, laundry, and various physical chores, occasionally organizing documents in the study, and now and then receiving a respectful visitor or two.
And Suolan himself was much the same, spending most of his time tending to the medicinal plants and flowers in the garden, or preparing delicious meals in the kitchen, handling all the daily housework, or otherwise in his workshop concocting various wondrous remedies. Colleagues would also visit to discuss academic matters from time to time.
"Our work is rather special. We don't need to go out every day." Suolan chose his words carefully.
"Then where does the money come from?" Dorian pressed relentlessly. "Andrea said if his dad doesn't go to work, he doesn't get paid, and if he doesn't get paid, they can't buy toys. But our family never lacks anything?"
Suolan couldn't help but laugh softly. This question was indeed difficult to explain to a six-year-old. Could he really say outright, "Your dad controls the resource distribution of the entire European Beyonder market; he could earn endless income just lying in bed making phone calls"? Or, "Papa's licensing fees for remedy formulas alone are enough for our family of three to live in luxury"?
"Hmm... you can think of it as, Dad and Papa did a lot of work a long time ago, and now that work earns money on its own." Suolan tried to explain in simple terms.
"Work can earn money on its own? Can work move by itself?" Dorian's eyes went wide.
Just as Suolan was thinking about how to answer, Lleuad's figure appeared not far away. He wore designer sportswear, his blood red eyes carrying a languid smile, a luxury paper bag in one hand that seemed to contain some sort of gift box.
"What's going on? What are my two treasures discussing?" Lleuad walked over. Seeing his beloved crouching down, he used his free hand to ruffle Dorian's hair.
"Dad! Why do my classmates' parents all have to go out to work, but you and Papa don't?" Dorian immediately posed the question to his other father. "Every day you just wipe things at home, vacuum the floor, play with blood, and Papa just grows flowers, cooks, and does magic. Why do you have money from just that?"
Lleuad raised an eyebrow at Suolan, who smiled wryly and tilted his head slightly, indicating the question was difficult to answer.
Lleuad also crouched down and said in his usual playful tone, "Because Dad is really impressive~ When Dad was young, he already did everything that needed to be done, so now he just needs to stay in shape at home and handle some important matters."
"What about Papa?" Dorian tossed the question back to Suolan.
"Papa too. Papa researched a lot of useful things, and now other people have to pay Papa if they want to use them." Suolan smiled gently.
"What useful things?"
"Well... you know those remedies Papa makes, right? Like the kind that makes your little tummy stop hurting. Papa taught other people how to make those remedies, and when they earn money using these formulas, they have to share some of it with Papa." Suolan tried to use terms a child could understand.
Dorian nodded, half understanding, then asked again, "Then what did Dad do when he was young?"
"Hmm..." Lleuad pondered for a moment. "He let a lot of people know that Dad is really impressive and has many useful things, so now when they want to do business, they all have to come discuss it with Dad. They have to pay money to buy the things Dad has."
"So Dad just sells things to grown-ups?"
"That's right, selling to many grown-ups. But sometimes naughty bad guys show up, and Dad has to go defeat them to protect them." Lleuad winked mysteriously.
Dorian pouted thoughtfully, then had a sudden realization. "So that means, because Dad and Papa are really impressive, money just finds its way to our house on its own?"
Suolan couldn't help but burst out laughing, and Lleuad's expression turned doting as well.
Lleuad rubbed his son's chubby cheeks with both hands. "That's right. But Dad still has to train every day to stay impressive, and Papa has to keep researching new remedy formulas."
"Then I'm going to become really impressive too, so I won't have to go out to work every day! Then I can always be together with Papa and Dad!" Dorian was thrilled, already planning his future.
"Our Little Milkshake will definitely be very impressive." Suolan kissed his son's forehead. "But for now, the most important thing is to do well in school."
On the way to the parking lot, Dorian was still digesting the new knowledge he had gained today. So not all parents could stay home all day like his own. So most parents had to leave home to earn money. And the reason his dad and papa could stay home was because they were "really impressive," so impressive that money found its way to them on its own.
"Dad, Papa, I think our family is really cool." Dorian looked at his two fathers earnestly.
"Why do you say that?" Suolan asked.
"Because everyone else's parents are always so busy and have to go out for so long, but you're always home and always have time for me." Dorian's smile was bright and innocent, little stars of admiration sparkling in his eyes. "And you're both so impressive! I want to become the most impressive 'Black-Blood Thorn' and 'Druid' too!"
Lleuad and Suolan exchanged a glance, warmth and tenderness bubbling up in their hearts. Indeed, they realized that the greatest meaning of the vast commercial empires they had worked so hard to build in their youth was that they could now have more time to spend with each other, and with this child who had arrived unexpectedly yet was infinitely precious.
"We think it's pretty cool too, having such a smart child as Little Milkshake." Suolan said softly. Not just "cool," but incredibly fortunate.
"That's right, our little treasure is the coolest and best in the world, and will definitely become even more impressive than Dad and Papa in the future." Lleuad's voice was lazy, but his gaze was quite serious.
Dorian smiled contentedly. Holding both his fathers' hands, he continued walking toward the parking lot. Although he didn't fully understand the complex concepts of "work" and "earning money," he knew he had the best family in the world. And in the not-too-distant future, when he truly came to understand Lleuad and Suolan's standing in the Occult Circle, he would realize even more deeply that he really was a winner in life, born with a silver spoon in his mouth.
But that was all yet to come. For now, little Dorian only needed to enjoy this happiness of being unconditionally loved, along with his beautiful dreams of "becoming really impressive" someday. That was enough.
