It's another day in the bar with JO, your back for more. Maybe you are looking for a good story after a bad day. As JO pours you a root beer to start off a not so sweet story, he begins with "Heroes are everyone's favorite things, but they may not be the most lawful thing despite doing so much good.”
In the busy city of New York a wannabe hero was chasing a purse thief with cops chasing them both. For you see you can’t just wear a mask and beat up criminals for fun or “the greater good”. They are laws for a reason of course. Officer Ben is hot on the tail of the hero and thief, but as he speeds on the road, nearly crashing into several other cars just to catch this 2, he loses them as both dash into a narrow alley. By the time the rubber on the tires halt, the thief is beaten to a red pulp. Broken teeth and a gash on the forehead, a note is beside the bleeding man that reads “Return the purse it has an old woman's medic stuff.” in marker. Ben cuffs the man and takes the purse to evidence. He does not care if the woman asked for her things, they were evidence until he didn't need them. The Officer was a hard law man who never gave a person a break. Speeding cause you may get fired, you get a ticket and he’ll be at court to make sure you paid. J-Walked, get a right up. Even if you are “helping” stop bad guys, in his eyes you are a crazed attacker. After a long day he returns to his apartment where his adult son Sid was typing on his laptop for some school work. Ben never really talks to his son, but still cared for him like a father would. Sid asked if he was the purse thief, and BEn replied with “ I got the man, but not after the crazed mask jerk ruffled him up. He looked like ground beef thanks to him.” Sid said “You mean The Basher, he stop the guy, for what its worth maybe if it was not for him the guy would have gotten away,” This upset Ben as he said “That still doesn’t mean he is above the law, maybe if this stupid post on instagram or what ever actually gave a shit they would see him as a masked danger who happened to get a few crimes. I will stop crimes with the law and if I need to I’ll make sure he won't get away with it.” Ben was cold the rest of the night, his son was a good kid in his eyes, but he hated what the city had become because of “The Basher”. The next day was different from the last few weeks, this time when the scream of help was called the Basher was on sight but not so much of a mother crying for help, but a trap set by an Officer with a bone to pick with him. Before The Basher could do a daring escape he was shocked, Literally by Officer Ben’s taser. And when he unmasked the man behind the mask, he cried as he cuffed him without mercy. At the station Ben walked in with his son cuffed and ready to meet the slammer. Ben was heart broken, but his pain was not heard nor was his son begging for him to listen to him. Sid was silent the whole time, for he knew his father would choose his job over his son. The dark and ironic part Sid didn’t get a trial either. The officer on duty was a loud mouth who caused the man's life to say “So you're the Basher…” Later the day he was found bleeding but not breathing. For Ben he couldn’t prove who did it or who spoke his son's identity. Be it that Ben still did his job by the letter, except more people didn’t have hope. A hero's death never gives people a safe feeling. So when weeks passed and more people grew more distant, it made Ben’s job and griff just harder on top of it all. On a cold gray morning he was sitting in his car, looking hollow as he saw in the corner of his eye the purse thief from before walking the same alley he was beaten in a month ago. Ben left the safe car to check out what he was doing, and only the Thief walked out with a stained hand. Ben was shanked, and bleeding fast, he was calling for help, but those who heard those screams, well they didn’t hear nothing. Cause who wants to play the hero role if you are not welcome from those who have things under control. Ben later in the hospital lost an eye and never returned to work again. Not because he couldn’t see clearly, but because what good is being good if you made the bad guy to begin with.
Back in the bar JO cleans your glass and says “He did nothing really wrong, but he didn’t have kindness in his heart either. Sometimes doing what's right is a gray line and other times it is not. This world can make such Faithful,Faithful Ugly People.”
