If you're confused as to why Life would go for such an intimate move last episode, remember that they've shared a past that's likely romantic, and something happened which causes them to avoid each other. Life may not remember everything (as you may have noticed) but he hasn't forgotten everything either. His emotions are still there.
As to why they act like awkward teenagers one minute and intimate the next second, remember they've been drifting apart for 500 million years. It's not a distance that's quickly erased. They're still cautious and confused.
