Chapter 23: Footsteps

Chapter 23: Footsteps

This chapter contains scenes of psychological tension, implied pursuit, intense fear, and threat of violence. Reader discretion is advised.

The days that followed had been, on the surface, calm for Noah. Too calm. He had adapted to his new job with almost mechanical efficiency: precise schedules, repetitive tasks, cordial but distant coworkers. That routine offered him an illusion of normalcy he was grateful for, even though he couldn’t shake the persistent feeling that he was walking on a fragile surface.

That night, while organizing his briefcase and wrapping up the last pending matters with a coworker via messages, he thought about his mother. Always his mother. He had to return home soon.

According to the police, Sebastian had vanished without a trace during those three years, as if the earth had swallowed him whole. Far from reassuring Noah, that fact unsettled him. Absolute absence was more disturbing than a constant threat. Noah longed to return to a life where he didn’t have to wonder, every time he looked up, whether someone was watching him from some dark corner.

“I see, Mom… thank you for telling me,” he said softly as he put on his coat, speaking to her on the phone. “For now, everything’s going well at work.”

Claire replied on the other end of the line in a tone that tried to sound calm, but couldn’t entirely hide her concern.

“I’m glad to hear that, sweetheart. But don’t trust it too much. Sebastian may be gone, yes… but he’s still dangerous.”

Noah nodded, even though she couldn’t see him. At that moment, a strange sound echoed somewhere in the office. Something subtle, almost imperceptible, but out of place enough to tense his entire body.

Claire heard it too. Her voice stopped abruptly for a few seconds that felt far too long.

“Are you sure there’s no one else there?” she asked, with forced calm.

Noah strained his hearing, scanning the nearly empty space. Everything looked fine.. Claire had always had a sixth sense for these things, and Noah had learned to trust it more than any logical explanation.

“I’m going to check the hallway,” he murmured.

“No!” she replied immediately, her voice edged with desperation. “Don’t check anything. Listen to me carefully. Don’t confirm it. Hide. Get out of there. He must not find you.”

Noah’s stomach clenched. Before he could respond, he heard footsteps. They weren’t hurried, but they weren’t erratic either. They were deliberate. Close

“Yeah… I’m going to hide,” he whispered.

He crouched as low as he could and slipped into a small adjoining room, a windowless storage closet. He closed the door carefully, holding his breath. Darkness enveloped him at once, broken only by the light of his phone, still connected to Claire

The footsteps stopped for a moment. Silence returned, heavy and unnatural. Claire remained on the other end of the line, listening to every breath her son took.

“I’m inside,” Noah whispered. “I haven’t heard anything again… it has to be him. I don’t know how he found me.”

Claire let out a trembling breath, though her voice remained tense.

“Okay… okay. Stay quiet. Don’t move. I’m calling the police right now.”

“Yes,” he barely replied.

“Don’t hang up,” she insisted. “No matter what happens, keep the line open.”

A creak sounded on the other side of the door. Noah swallowed and clenched his free hand into a fist until it hurt. The footsteps returned, this time clearer, closer, as if someone were searching deliberately.

Claire held her breath.

“Noah… are you still there?” she whispered, her voice breaking.

He answered with a faint affirmative sound, fighting the urge to move. Claire told him not to scream, to stay silent. She told him the police were on their way, that it would take about ten minutes.

Ten minutes could be an eternity.

Noah felt his heart pounding wildly. He thought about his mother, about how vulnerable she was, about the constant risk he had exposed her to without meaning to. He couldn’t keep being someone who only ran. If that door opened, he would have to defend himself. He didn’t want to, but he knew he couldn’t freeze again.

Then a sharp blow shook the door. Noah stayed still, his body rigid, but he set the phone down next to a small cabinet and raised his fists, placing them close to his face just as he had practiced so many times. On the other end of the line, Claire kept whispering his name, getting no response. A muffled, metallic sound filtered through the door. Something cold. Threatening.

Noah’s eyes widened. He couldn’t speak. He couldn’t move. If that person came in, he would do whatever was necessary to survive.

Silence fell again, so abruptly it was almost deafening. Claire, her heart in her throat, spoke again.

“Are you still there…?”

Before Noah could answer, voices were heard in the distance.

They were firm and authoritative —sirens— and hope broke through like a beam of light. Noah grabbed the phone with trembling hands.

“Yes… I’m okay,” he whispered.

Three loud knocks struck the door. But It wasn’t an attempt to break in, it was a warning.

Seconds later, the police burst into the office and the noises stopped completely. Whoever had been there had fled. They had been willing to hurt him —perhaps something worse.

Noah slowly slid down against the wall, his body still shaking. He hadn’t been alone. His mother had stayed with him the entire time, even from a distance.

And it was in that moment, his pulse still racing, that he made a silent but firm decision: he would not burden her with that fear again. Not again. He had to learn how to defend himself.

Sebastian Cross runs the company with flawless precision, his obsessive attention to detail and rigid expectations quickly becoming impossible to ignore. Beneath his composed exterior lies a presence that dominates every room he enters.

As uncomfortable silences, excessive demands, and an intimacy Noah doesn’t fully understand begin to blur professional boundaries, he finds himself caught in a dynamic he struggles to name —one that slowly tightens around him.
