This chapter contains serious illness, a medical crisis, and intense emotional distress. Reader discretion is advised.

Noah had decided to keep his distance. He didn’t reply to messages, he didn’t return to the gym, he adjusted his routes, his schedules, even the way he breathed when he went out into the street. Everything that had once been routine now felt exposed. He was still upset with his boyfriend; he needed his space.

Nicholas respected that distance. Too much. He didn’t insist, and he certainly didn’t show up ‘by coincidence’. It was obvious that guilt was eating away at him, but he didn’t push. He limited himself to being available, like a door that never quite closed.

And even so, in the middle of that tension between them, something happened. Something that had nothing to do with Sebastian, or Damien, or the past. Something that simply occurred:

Claire’s health had worsened.

The morning after that argument, the pain didn’t subside. She woke up with a strange pressure in her chest, a kind of exhaustion that didn’t feel like other days. Her breathing was irregular, shallow. Her skin had a dull, almost grayish tone, and her hands were trembling.

“Noah…” she murmured from the couch. “Today… I’m not well.”

Noah, who was still at home and about to leave for work, looked up immediately. He watched her closely, with that instinct that only comes after years of caring. Something in her posture, in her face, set off an internal alarm.

“Where does it hurt?” he asked, moving closer to his mother.

“Here… and here,” she replied, pointing to her chest and her side. “And it’s hard for me… to breathe.”

Noah didn’t hesitate. He grabbed his phone and dialed emergency services.

But for some reason, there was no signal. Nothing.

“Come on…” he whispered, trying again, but it was the same.

The building had been under repairs for days. The lines were unstable, intermittent —useless right when he needed them most.

“Damn it! I’ll try that emergency app,” he muttered, pacing back and forth. “Mom, hold on a second, okay?”

He thought about going out to get help, knocking on doors, running to the corner. But he couldn’t leave her alone. Not like this.

Then something occurred to him —to send a message… to the person he was still angry with.

The name on the screen stopped him cold.

Nicholas Lawson.

Noah hesitated. Pride, pain, confusion —everything crashed down on him at once.

Claire squeezed his hand with what little strength she had left.

“Call him,” she whispered. “Not for me. For you. You… need him.”

Noah swallowed. He closed his eyes for a second and went through with sending the message.

“Noah?” Nicholas’s reply appeared instantly, still in his small apartment, which wasn’t far from his partner’s. “Is everything okay?”

“No,” Noah answered, without preamble. “I need help. It’s my mother.”

There was a very brief silence. On the other end, Nicholas grabbed his jacket abruptly from the closet, rushing out of his apartment.

“I’m on my way,” he said. “Stay with her. I’m coming.”

Minutes later, he was there. He arrived quickly, breathing hard —he had probably run several blocks to reach them.

Noah didn’t comment on it.

Nicholas entered the apartment and assessed the situation with precise, almost clinical calm. He knelt in front of Claire, observed her breathing, took her pulse, spoke to her softly.

“Mrs. Harper, look at me,” he said. “Can you tell me your full name?”

“Claire… Harper,” she replied, with difficulty.

“Good. Do you feel dizzy?”

“A little… and… cold.”

Nicholas looked up at Noah.

“She needs medical attention now,” he said.

“There’s no signal,” Noah replied, his voice breaking. “I’ve tried everything.”

Nicholas nodded.

“Then we go downstairs,” he said. “I’ll handle it.”

The trip was tense. Noah carried his mother carefully; she felt far too light.

Nicholas, meanwhile, cleared the way, held doors open, spoke clearly and firmly —no panic, but fully aware of both his partner and the woman.

“Breathe with me, Mrs. Harper,” he said. “One… two… that’s it. Noah, slowly. I’ve got you.”

Out on the street, the signal returned.

The ambulance arrived minutes later that felt like hours. Nicholas gave the information with precision. Noah didn’t let go of his mother’s hand until they took her away.

At the hospital, time stretched into an eternity.

Noah sat alone in the waiting room, his hands trembling, his gaze fixed on nothing. He didn’t remember how long he had been there when someone sat across from him and placed a glass of water on the table.

“Breathe,” Nicholas said calmly. “She’s stable. They’re evaluating her.”

Noah closed his eyes, trying to steady himself.

“Thank you,” he whispered.

Nicholas nodded without answering. He simply stayed by his side.

Hours later, Claire was feeling much better and sleeping, connected to monitors. Noah and Nicholas walked down the nearly empty hallway, always together.

“I didn’t want to call you,” Noah admitted. “But when it happened… I didn’t think. I just did.”

“It’s okay,” Nicholas replied. “You’re not alone.”

Noah looked at him.

“I don’t know if I trust you yet. I’m still upset, but…” he said honestly. “You didn’t leave.”

Nicholas stopped, never taking his eyes off him.

“I wouldn’t,” he said. “Never.”

The silence between them wasn’t uncomfortable —just heavy.

“It still hurts,” Noah added. “But… I don’t want to lose you. I just need to understand.”

Nicholas nodded, his eyes lowered.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I should have told you from the beginning.”

Noah took a step closer. They didn’t touch; it wasn’t necessary. Because, at least that night, love was what kept them together.

Sebastian Cross runs the company with flawless precision, his obsessive attention to detail and rigid expectations quickly becoming impossible to ignore. Beneath his composed exterior lies a presence that dominates every room he enters.

As uncomfortable silences, excessive demands, and an intimacy Noah doesn’t fully understand begin to blur professional boundaries, he finds himself caught in a dynamic he struggles to name —one that slowly tightens around him.
