Nopales are the leaves of probably the most popular kind of edible cactus. I don´t know how well-known they are outside of México, but here it's a pretty common food. In some places, I found that they are called "prickly pear," but that's the name of the fruit of another cactus (quite tasty). We call that fruit "Tuna" just like how you call the fish.
